Oral Curcumin for the Treatment of Pain of Thumb Base Joint (CMC) Arthritis

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the use of turmeric (Curcumin) as a treatment for pain of thumb-joint arthritis. Turmeric is commonly being used as an over-the-counter treatment for musculoskeletal pain. Clinical trials have demonstrated a pain-relief benefit for knee osteoarthritis, however no clinical trial has been performed to establish efficacy of curcumin in humans for thumb-joint arthritis. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: - Is Turmeric more effective than placebo at relieving pain for thumb-joint arthritis? A placebo is a look-alike substance that contains no active drug. - Is Turmeric more effective than placebo at improving patient-reported outcomes for CMC arthritis? - Is Turmeric safe for participants with thumb-joint arthritis? Participants will: - take 4 weeks of daily Turmeric capsules, - take 4 weeks of daily placebo capsules - answer daily surveys about how they are feeling and functioning.

Exercise Programs on Gait in Children With Scoliosis Diagnosed JIA

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is one of the common chronic diseases in childhood. Problems such as weakness or pain may occur in JIA, especially in the joints and the muscles around the trunk (1). These conditions may lead to abnormal displacement of the center of gravity, deterioration of biomechanics, and muscle imbalance in children with JIA (2, 3). All these situations can lead to scoliosis, which we often encounter in children with JIA. Current studies describing various 3-dimension (3D) exercise methods (SEAS, Schroth, Dobomed, BSPTS, Side-shift, Lyon, etc.) effective on scoliosis (4). However, no study was found in the literature that searching the effects of these exercise methods on gait parameters in children with scoliosis diagnosed JIA.

Effects of Case Management for Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis in Taiwan

Case management (CM) has been recommended as a way of inspiring measurable changes in individual behaviors and improving clinical outcomes for patients with chronic diseases. However, data on its effectiveness for Taiwanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are limited. This study aimed to determine the long-term effectiveness of CM that focused on nurses' role among Taiwanese RA patients. A quasi-experimental pre-post test, control-group study with purposive sampling recruited RA patients from a hospital in Taiwan during 2016-2017. CM program was composed of health education sessions and follow-up telephone consultations over a six-month period. A review of medical records and structured questionnaires yielded data about patient demographics and disease characteristics, and included Chinese version of the Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale and the Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire. A comparison of the long-term effectiveness of the CM program was made using generalized estimating equation. This evidence-based study may be beneficial to characterize the long-term effectiveness of CM for Taiwanese patients with RA, and may be a reference for healthcare providers in facilitating the provision of appropriate interventions to improve the adaptation processes and clinical outcomes for them.

Rheumatology Diet Study

This study aims to collect information on rheumatology patients' dietary habits, autoimmune disease activity, dietary changes, disease symptom improvements, and perceptions on their dietary habits and how it affects their autoimmune disease. The main objective is to see if rheumatology patients change their dietary habits after their diagnosis of an autoimmune disease and if it subjectively improved their disease symptoms. It will also look at rheumatology patients' expectations for their rheumatologist when it comes to dietary advice and what resources they used to choose their new dietary habits. The study also seeks to measure the interest that rheumatology patients have in pursuing dietary changes as a means of controlling the symptoms of their autoimmune disease. It is expected that patients who changed their eating habits to healthier diets such as a Mediterranean diet would report less severe autoimmune disease symptoms. There are limited dietary recommendations for the management of many rheumatological diseases, so this study seeks to assess rheumatology patients' willingness to try dietary modifications, what improvements they had, and why they decide to make these changes in light of limited information.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most frequently occurring autoimmune rheumatic diseases, affecting an estimated 1% of the global population (1). RA is a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to the development of synovial inflammation and effusion, ultimately followed by joint destruction and permanent disability. There is a discrepancy in the understanding of what's of importance when living a life with a chronic disease. The importance of patients' perspectives concerning disease- and treatment related impacts, is of crucial importance when involving patients in decisions about treatment, and to support the patients in optimal medication-taking behaviour to ensure patient health and reduce health care costs. There are still unmet needs that have a huge impact on quality of life (QoL) such as fatigue, pain, sleep and psychological issues, etc, which need to be taken seriously as these can have severe and debilitating consequences for the individual. Self-management Nursing Intervention for Women With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Introduction. Chronic autoimmune diseases are catalogued as catastrophic conditions that generate a negative impact on the health and well-being of the affected person. In this particular case, rheumatoid arthritis is its main representative, which is a predominant disease in women, affecting not only the musculoskeletal system but in general, all dimensions of the human being and generating great costs for health systems. Adaptation to living with the disease requires the individual to develop capacities for a positive management of the condition, and in this sense, the development of self-management behaviors becomes a crucial element. Method. The investigators propose a two-arm pragmatic randomized clinical trial with pre- and post-intervention measures, to evaluate the effect of the Chronic Disease Selfmanagement Program (CDSMP) on the increase in the levels of self-efficacy, self-management and health-related quality of life of women with RA who are attended by outpatient rheumatology consultation in a health institution in Bogota compared to usual care. Results. A description will be made of the sociodemographic and clinical variables present in you together with the measurement of the variables of health-related quality of life through the QOLRA-II; self-efficacy with the specific scale of self-efficacy in arthritis; and self-management behaviors by means of the scale of self-management in the disease. The measurement for the intervention group will be performed before and after the implementation of the program and for the control group an initial measurement and another one after six weeks. Discussion. The implementation of the CDSMP could generate a positive effect on the variables of self-management, self-efficacy and health-related quality of life in women with RA who are attended by outpatient consultation in a health institution in Bogota compared to usual care.

Primary Objective To investigate if patients hospitalised for older adults with a decreased level of physical function, either related to a chronic condition e.g., COPD, Congestive heart failure, renal failure; infections; frailty and tendency of falling; orthopaedic surgery - after hip fracture will increase their time spent out of bed during hospitalisation and 3 months after discharge through visual feedback and motivational intervention about physical activities from a new mobile technology. Hypothesis Patients hospitalised for medical disease will increase their physical activity level during hospitalisation and 3 months after discharge through visual feedback and motivational intervention from a new mobile technology.
