The goal of this observational study is to learn about current practices for the acute neuropsychiatric management of older adults during emergency department (ED) visits. Researchers will compare current standard of care practices with implemented guideline practice to see if standardized medication guidelines help reduce the usage of antipsychotics and/or benzodiazepines during acute presentations. The main questions this study aims to answer are: - How many older adults are receiving antipsychotics or benzodiazepines during emergency department visits? - Why are older adults receiving antipsychotics or benzodiazepines during emergency department visits? - How many older adults who receive antipsychotics or benzodiazepines during emergency department visits have an underlying cognitive or movement disorder? - What effects does administration of antipsychotics or benzodiazepines during emergency department visits have on patient outcomes in older adults and adults with neurocognitive disorders? - Does implementation of standardized medication guidelines help reduce the usage of antipsychotics and/or benzodiazepines during acute presentations?
The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of Divomed in organising complex hospital discharges with a conventional organisation. Effectiveness will be assessed by reducing the length of stay of patients in geriatric short-stay care.
The goal of this quasi-experimental study using a pre and post test design is to learn about the effect of participating in an exercise program with hydraulic exercise equipment on fall risk in the older adult population. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Does the use of hydraulic exercise equipment decrease fall risk in older adults? - Does the use of hydraulic exercise equipment improve function in older adults? Participants will be evaluated pre and post intervention for strength, fall risk using Berg Balance Scale, Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment, Timed Up and Go, and functional ability using the Lower Extremity Functional Scale. Participants will engage in an exercise program using 5 different pieces of hydraulic exercise equipment (Frei FACTUM® novus II line) 2x/week for for 6 weeks for 30-45 minutes each session. The equipment uses concentric movements only and works agonist and antagonist muscles with each machine (IE: push and pull, both concentric).
The purpose of this study is to understand the impacts of regular consumption of freeze-dried table grape powder on eye health and regulation of advanced glycation end products in Singapore older adults. The investigators hypothesize that regular consumption of freeze-dried table grape powder will promote improvements in eye health and lower levels of advanced glycation end products when compared to the placebo group.
Loneliness in elderly individuals increases with age and negatively affects individuals by decreasing life satisfaction. In recent years, horticultural therapy is a type of therapy that has developed and is added routine care of elderly individuals living in nursing homes. Social interaction, life satisfaction, feelings of success and responsibility and increase while loneliness and depression levels decrease through human-nature interaction in horticultural therapy. In our country, no study has been found on the effects of horticultural therapy on physical or mental health in elderly individuals. This research will be conducted as a randomized control group study to examine the effects of horticultural therapy on loneliness and life satisfaction in elderly individuals living in nursing homes.
Promoting good care, well-being and quality of life for geriatric patients is a long-standing initiative in Quebec, and one in which the Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM) has always been a leader. For example, the IUGM played a major role in drafting the reference framework for the AAPA (approach adapted to the needs of the elderly), which was introduced by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux in 2011. The investigator propose to continue this work by focusing in this project on the development of a new intervention aimed at the well-being and quality of life of geriatric patients and based on music and VR. Thee investigator hypothesize (1) that a VR headset-based intervention based on listening to and observing a concert of musicians playing classical music is feasible for patients hospitalized at the IUGM's URFI, and (2) that this intervention can improve their mental health - i.e. their positive emotions, well-being and quality of life - and reduce their anxiety.
Background: Despite an increase in lifespan over the last decades, our healthspan lags behind. In our aging population, it is pressing that we prevent age-related morbidities and associated burden on the health care system. Instead of investigating aging in already aged populations, the currently proposed study aims to elucidate the process of immune aging in relation to biological aging, demographic and lifestyle factors in young and midlife adults, and to identify early biomarkers and pathways associated with fast versus slow immune aging and aging endotypes. Study design: A single-center, observational prospective cohort study in the Netherlands. Participants from priorly established cohorts will be invited to join the EVIA-study. We will obtain demographic and basic clinical data and biological samples (blood and stool) at baseline and after three years, with a short, yearly online questionnaire in between.
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the effectiveness of a memory enhancement technique in an aging population.
This trial will examine whether interrupting 3.5 hours of sitting every 30 min with 6 min high intensity interval training (HIIT) breaks compared to light intensity interval training (LIIT) will improve brain health in cognitively normal older adults. This trial will test the feasibility of HIIT breaks to sitting. It will also address several important but unanswered questions: (1) Does interrupting sitting with short HIIT breaks improve frontoparietal function? (2) Can interrupting sitting with HIIT breaks improve cognitive functions?
