Longevity in Russia

This is an observational cohort study of long-living adults (participants aged 90 and above) from the Central Federal District of Russia. The study seeks to determine the genetic and cellular and molecular determinants of healthy longevity and to assess the impact of lifestyle and socioeconomic and environmental factors on healthy longevity. The study is expected to result in the development of a panel of markers of healthy longevity and/or a model of healthy aging based on the analysis of all factors under consideration.

Effects of Multicomponent Training on Inflammation Parameters and Muscle Quality in Elderly Obese Woman

Population aging worldwide has increased substantially in recent years. In order to prevent disabling diseases and improve the quality of life, it is necessary to understand the conditions related to the health of this specific population. One of the known alterations that occur in the body is the increased low-grade systemic inflammatory process, anabolic resistance, and muscle catabolism. These conditions can negatively interfere with muscle quality and functionality. However, the maintenance of the metabolic and physical functionality of muscle tissue can be preserved by performing physical exercises throughout life because of its anti-inflammatory mechanisms. In the present study, a multicomponent training program that combines aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility capacities was used. The hypothesis is that performing this type of physical exercise will mitigate meta-inflammation and its negative effects, in addition to stimulating anabolic signals and reducing insulin resistance present in anabolic resistance, leading to improved quality and muscle functionality in elderly women with obesity.

This is an interventional study on nutraceuticals. It is a randomized controlled, open-label, prospective, single-center study that involves the enrollment of 82 patients with osteoporosis and 41 subjects without osteoporosis. The hypothesis the decarboxylated form of Osteocalcin (OC), called GluOC, represents a clinically useful marker for monitoring the effects of supplementation with vitamin K in association with anabolic treatment with teriparatide will be analyzed not only on bone but also on skeletal muscle and energy metabolism in patients with severe osteoporosis.

Prevalence, Determinants and Natural History of Frailty and Pre-frailty in Elderly People

Frailty syndrome (i.e. frailty) is a geriatric syndrome which relies on the reduction of multisystem reserve capacity. Frail people have a lower potential to respond to external stressors and various life incidents as well as they present a weak prognosis particularly in cardiovascular diseases. Yet, frailty is not only a set of physical deficits, but it also concerns psychological and social dimensions of human functioning. Hence, an approach to frailty should be multidimensional because such a concept more adequately reflects a functional degradation in the elderly. Frailty is usually associated with the impaired condition of circulatory system, and therefore, an identification of subclinical cardiovascular abnormalities is paramount in the frailty prevention and treatment. Another potential mechanism which may predispose to frailty is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. This system plays a crucial role in the response to internal or external stressors such as diseases and activities of daily living. An impairment of the autonomic nervous system function may maintain or accelerate the frailty process. In this scientific project, a comprehensive echocardiography will investigate cardiac function with a particular attention to features which typically change with age, like flow parameters and chambers sizes. The activity of the autonomic nervous system will be explored with the analysis of heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory signals. The study participants will also undergo routine medical examination and a number of additional tests, including: assessment of cognitive function, psychological condition, nutrition status, activities of daily living, and risk of falls. The study group will comprise community dwelling elderly individuals over the age of 65 years who get around by themselves. After 2 years, the participants will be re-examined for their frailty and independence status, as well as their survival will be checked with the National Health Found electronic system. The aim of this project is to seek for factors determining frailty and to explore the frailty impact on the elderly people survival. Particular attention will be paid to the multidimensional frailty which is a new concept of the functional decline in the elderly. In addition, the prevalence of different modes of frailty in Polish community will be investigated. The results of this research should help to establish preventative and therapeutic strategies against frailty.

Multifactorial Study of the Relationship Between the Conditions of Life and the Incidence of Risk of Falling

HYPOTHESIS: The incidence of risk of falls is related to the living conditions of elderly people in the community. OBJECTIVES: • To study the relationship between living conditions and the incidence of risk of falls in older adults in the community. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: - Describe the socio-characteristics of the elderly group in the community. - Identify the pathologies or health problems that they present. - Evaluate their functional and dependency degree. - Evaluate the risk of falls that each person may have. - Identify the risk factors involved in falls. - Analyze the prevalence of falls that they present. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive and analytical-statistical study. Administration of the Barthel Index. Administration of the Downton fall risk assessment scale and the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I). Administration of the Tinetti assessment tool and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Evaluation of socio-demographic characteristics, clinical and functional assessment, consumption of drugs, as well as characteristics of the falls of each elderly person in the community. The protocol has been authorized by the Ethics Committee of the Salamanca health area to make the project possible.

ZEBinix® Retention Rate in Epilepsy in Elderly Patients

The incidence of provoked and unprovoked seizures is known to increase with advancing age. Eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) is one of the third generation of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) that have been developed in the last ten years with a favorable safety profile. ESL is approved in Europe and the USA as adjunctive or monotherapy in adults with partial-onset seizures. Nevertheless, retrospective data in monotherapy condition in the elderly epileptic population are sparse. The aim of the ZEBRE study is to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of ESL in elderly epileptic patients (> 65 years). The completion of this study will provide crucial information on the most appropriate ESL treatment for elderly patients suffering from partial seizures.

Spanish Adaptation and Validation of the Everyday Cognition Battery (ECB).

HYPOTHESIS: The Spanish version of the Everyday Cognition Battery Scale (ECB) is valid and reliable in the Spanish population. OBJECTIVES: • Providing a validated scale in Spanish to evaluate daily cognition in older adults. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: - Translating the original English version of the ECB into Spanish. - Adapting the scale to the sociocultural context of Spain. - Checking the psychometric characteristics (reliability and validity) of the translated version . STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Permission to use the ECB scale will be requested to the author, Allaire JC. Translation and adaptation of the scale. Administration of the four tests of the ECB to the individuals participating in the study. Administration of the Rapid Evaluation of Cognitive Functions (RECF) and Lawton and Brody scales. Analysis of the psychometric characteristics of the translated version. The protocol has been authorized by the Ethics Committee of the Salamanca health area to make the project possible.

The Georgetown University Memory Disorders Program, part of the Department of Neurology, is conducting pilot studies of the feasibility of various diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and other neurodegenerative diseases. Further, this study is assessing longitudinal changes in biological, lifestyle, and cognitive assessment collection. The primary goal of this study is to examine the feasibility of biochemical assays, genetic testing, and cognitive and lifestyle assessments in the ante-mortem diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment and other neurodegenerative diseases. This research involves genetic and cognitive status testing but the findings will not be shared with research subjects. This will be accomplished ex vivo using blood, and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients with a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, or other neurodegenerative diseases and from normal controls.
