Filter by:This study aims to investigate whether consuming a drink containing powdered blueberries (equivalent to 150 g fresh fruit) can improve mood and cognition in healthy young adults. Blood biomarkers of inflammation and neurotransmitter turnover will be analyzed as well as responses to computer-based cognitive tasks designed to measure verbal memory, executive function, and emotional processing.
This study aims to analyze the effects of a psychological intervention to promote wellbeing. To do so, a brief intervention is developed to enhance a sense of gratitude through a multiple baseline across components design. Traditional measures will be used together with the incorporation of a novel evaluation methodology such as the EMA, which allows the collection of data in the context of people's daily lives and at different specific times, that is, in real time.
This study investigates the underlying mechanisms of a novel emotion regulation intervention among recently bereaved spouses. More specifically, this study examines how thinking about an emotional stimulus in a more adaptive way can affect the relationship between psychological stress, psychophysiological biomarkers of adaptive cardiac response, and brain activity. The emotion regulation strategy targeted is reappraisal, specifically reappraisal-by-distancing (i.e., thinking about a negative situation in a more objective, impartial way) versus reappraisal-by-reinterpretation (i.e., thinking about a better outcome for a negative situation than what initially seemed apparent). The study seeks to determine if relatively brief, focused reappraisal training in bereaved spouses will result in reduction of self-reported negative affect, increases in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; a measure of heart rate variability reflecting adaptive cardiac vagal tone), reduction in blood-based inflammatory biomarkers, and changes in neural activity over time. Reappraisal-by-distancing is expected to lead to greater changes in these variables relative to reappraisal-by-reinterpretation. Additionally, it is expected that across time decreases in self-reported negative affect, increases in RSA, reductions in blood-based inflammatory biomarker levels, and changes in neural activity will in turn lead to reductions in depressive symptoms and grief rumination. Finally, it is expected that distancing training will lead to reductions in depressive symptoms and grief rumination that are mediated by changes in the targeted neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms.
The healthcare workforce is amongst the most stressed in the United Kingdom (UK). The Coronavirus (COVID-19) health pandemic has increased depression, anxiety, insomnia and distress in this population. Gratitude interventions have been shown to improve wellbeing, alongside reducing risk factors associated with the aforementioned mental health conditions. This online Randomised Control Trial of 219 healthcare staff, will investigate the effects of a gratitude intervention on wellbeing (gratitude, positive affect, happiness) and psychological distress (depression and negative affect). Means of pre- and post-outcome measures of two groups (gratitude journal and control) will be assessed for differences utilising t-tests.
The major aim of this pilot study is to evaluate a brief coping skills intervention for college students, based on an evidence-based treatment and delivered remotely via 14 short daily videos. Participants will be 150 Rutgers undergraduates who are enrolled in Fall 2020. Participants in the experimental group (n=100) will receive 4 daily smartphone surveys assessing stress, affect, and other related factors for two weeks before, during, and after the 2-week coping skills intervention. Participants in the control group (n=50) will receive assessments over the same time period with no skills intervention. Both groups will be assessed weekly throughout the Fall semester to monitor the transition to the new semester and longer-term impact of the intervention. The control condition participants will have access to the skills videos at the end of the study.
The overall objective of this in-lab randomized controlled trial is to test the efficacy of multi-day interruptions in sedentary behavior vs. single bouts of sustained exercise on metabolic, cognitive, affective, and cardiac autonomic nervous system responses in children with overweight and obesity who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The use of continuous glucose monitoring will provide insight into the daily and cumulative metabolic effects of each condition that have thus far not been studied. In-lab studies demonstrating sustained efficacy of this approach in ameliorating negative effects of sedentary behaviors in children are necessary for the optimization of field-based interventions. Given the lack of success of interventions to prevent obesity-related diseases and increasing rates of type 2 diabetes in children and its related healthcare costs, this study addresses a critical public health need by testing of novel intervention strategies to reduce obesity-related diseases in children with overweight and obesity.
This study seeks to investigate the effects of an online single-session intervention on college student mental health and well-being. Undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard will be randomized to a 30-minute single-session intervention or a study skills control group. Students' depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, positive and negative affect, and subjective well-being will be assessed up to 12 weeks post-intervention.
The primary aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of an intervention to reduce and break up prolonged sitting time in full-time police staff. The secondary aims of this study are to assess preliminary effects on patterns of sedentary behaviour (number of breaks, number of prolonged sitting bouts, average duration of prolonged sitting bouts, and total prolonged sitting duration), additional measures of sedentary behaviour (total sitting time, standing, and stepping), cardiometabolic risk markers, physiological stress (cortisol levels), physical health (self-report and postural stability), psychological wellbeing and mood, work stress (self-reported), and work performance (job satisfaction and productivity).
The objective of this study is to assess the impact of engaging in deliberate acts of kindness on resilience (primary outcome); social interaction anxiety and affect (secondary outcomes); and mood (exploratory outcome) of undergraduate and graduate students at Western University (UWO). Recruitment of 200 participants consisting of 150 full-time undergraduate and 50 graduate students, randomized to either the intervention (n=100) or control group (n=100) will be achieved via a mass email to all full-time students at UWO. Both intervention and control groups will receive an email with access to a relaxation and stress management booklet from UWO's Wellness Education Centre (http://studentexperience.uwo.ca/docs/RelaxationAndStressManagement.pdf). In addition, the intervention group will be asked to (1) complete and log/submit a minimum of three deliberate acts of kindness per day for one month, and (2) join the study-dedicated online site to connect with, support, and share experiences and ideas with each other around acts of kindness. Individuals in the intervention group will also receive a list of deliberate acts of kindness ideas, for reference. Baseline, immediate post intervention, and three-months post intervention data will be collected using previously validated questionnaires associated with each outcome of interest, and posted to Qualtrics, an online survey tool. Additionally, immediately following the intervention and 3 months post intervention all participants will complete an open-ended question asking them to describe their overall experience being involved in the study. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis will occur upon the completion of the study.
Sedentary behaviour of healthy subjects may have a detrimental impact on cerebral blood flow as well as cognitive measures related to mood and alertness. In this study we focus on the impact of leaving the desk to consume a cup of tea at regular intervals during a sedentary working day.
