Phase: Phase 2
Study type: Interventional

The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate "Step Up for STEM and Health Careers". The "Step Up for STEM and Health Careers" ("Step Up") game is an interactive, digital resource that includes the key elements of a bystander intervention for high school students to understand the importance of diversity in STEM; it also addresses skills, attitudes, and awareness to attain positive STEM identities and mitigate bias and harassment in STEM and health learning environments. Participants in the intervention arm will be asked to complete the Step Up interactive game; participants in the comparison group will be asked to view a PowerPoint presentation on bias and harassment in STEM/health fields as the control experience. The Step Up game intervention and study outcomes are theory-based (Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)): we will assess the impact of Step Up on attitudes about STEM/health careers, STEM/health career self-efficacy, and bystander behavior.

The Effect of Mindfulness Intervention Program on Adolescents' Internet Addiction

Mindfulness
Start date: February 1, 2024
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The Internet shows its presence in areas where human beings are actively involved, from education to health, from entertainment to the investment sector. The integration of the Internet into many areas of human life leads to its intensive use. According to the Global Digital Report, the number of individuals with access to the Internet worldwide at the beginning of 2024 is stated as 5.35 billion, and this number constitutes more than 66% of the total world population. One of the pioneering studies on internet addiction was conducted by Young. In this study, five subtypes of internet addiction were identified. These are cyber sex addiction (obsessive use of adult sites such as cyber sex, cyber porn), cyber relationship addiction (excessive involvement in online relationships), net compulsions (online gambling, shopping and trading), information overload (on websites). and constantly surfing databases) and computer addiction (playing computer games). Considering the sub-dimensions of internet addiction, it is seen that it affects many areas of life, from family life to interpersonal relationships, from social life to economic life. Conscious awareness is the awareness of one's internal state and environment. Mindfulness can help people avoid destructive or automatic habits and reactions by learning to observe their thoughts, feelings, and other momentary experiences without judging or reacting. Acting based on awareness is a much different way of life than the autopilot approach in which the individual carries out his daily routines and activities. In studies, mindfulness is examined not only to prevent the recurrence of addiction, but also as a long-term, ongoing health behavior that supports the recovery of addiction. Determining the effect of a mindfulness-based intervention program applied to adolescent nursing students studying at a university on internet addiction and awareness. is intended.

The Effectiveness of Peer-education Programs for Adolescents Diagnosed With Asthma

Start date: July 1, 2024
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The research was planned in a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of technology-based education provided by peers and adults to children diagnosed with asthma in the 12-18 age group. The study will be conducted in two phases. The initial phase will assess the efficacy of the training provided to peer mentors. The subsequent phase will examine the impact of peer-led and adult-delivered technology-based education on quality of life, asthma control, asthma knowledge, and self-efficacy in adolescents diagnosed with asthma. The required institutional permission and ethics committee approval was received. The study group of the study will consist of 45 adolescents (intervention group 1 [n=15], intervention group 2 [n=15], and control group [n=15]). Data will be collected by using the descriptive features form, the Adolescent Asthma Self-Efficiacy Questionaire, the Asthma Quality of Life Scale for Children, the Asthma Control Test, the Asthma Knowledge Test. The data will be analyzed using the SPSS 27 program.

NCT ID: NCT06366438 Completed - Parenting Clinical Trials

A Trial of Two Universal Programs for Parents of Teenagers

Start date: December 11, 2021
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Parent training programs in groups and over internet can help parents improve their interaction and communication with their children. There is however a lack knowledge of how programs work for parents of teenagers, as most studies have concerned younger children. Furthermore, most studies have been conducted on programs for selective populations with elevated risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of two universal preventive parenting programs for teenagers: The group-based program 'ABC-teen' and the online-based 'ParentWeb'. Both programs aim to strengthen the parent-adolescent relationship and reduce negative communication. The programs are developed in Sweden with content based on other established parenting programs (e.g., Comet, Incredible Years, the Triple P). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the the two programs, with adolescent mental health as primary outcome. Several secondary outcome measures concerning parenting and parent-adolescent relationship were also collected. Parents were randomized to ABC-teen, ParentWeb or a 6 months Wait-List control. Parent- and adolescent ratings were collected at baseline, after 4 and after 12 months. All data collection has now been completed and the next step is to process and analyze the data.

NCT ID: NCT06341634 Enrolling by invitation - Healthy Clinical Trials

Surveillance of Suicide Ideation in Adolescents (VISIA)

VISIA
Start date: February 6, 2024
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The goal of this observational study is to validate an AI algorithm's capability to differentiate the population with suicidal ideation from a control population using various multimodal variables, including voice analysis, facial emotions, natural language, and proteomics data. The primary research question it aims to answer is: Is it possible to identify suicidal ideation and suicide risk in adolescents early and non-intrusively using multimodal data analysis through digital instruments equipped with artificial intelligence? Participants in this study will be asked to: Complete psychometric instruments to establish a gold standard for detecting suicide risk and suicidal ideation. Provide voice recordings, facial emotion data, and linguistic content in natural and specific contexts. Participate in salivary proteomics data collection. This study compares three distinct groups: Ideation: Adolescent patients with current suicidal ideation. Clinical Population: Psychological or psychiatric patients of the same age and gender without suicidal ideation. General Population: Adolescents without known psychological or psychiatric pathology of the same age and gender, without suicidal ideation. Researchers will compare these groups to determine if the AI algorithm is effective in differentiating individuals with suicidal ideation (Group 1) from both a clinical control group (Group 2) and a general population control group (Group 3) using the collected multimodal data. The study aims to assess the algorithm's ability to identify early signs of suicide risk in these distinct participant populations.

Analysis of COMPASsion and Humanisation of Adolescents Facing the End-of-life Processes.

COMPAS
Start date: September 2024
Phase:
Study type: Observational [Patient Registry]

The investigators want to work on compassion, understood as the recognition of the suffering of others that motivates us to try to alleviate it. The goal of this Multicenter project, with a mixed sequential transformative methodology, is to analyze the impact of a participatory process of awareness and reflection on compassion, in the face of end-of-life processes, in adolescents aged 12-23 years in 6 Spanish provinces, and to understand how the participatory process can transform and improve their compassion. As the adolescents must be the protagonists of change, the study will be conducted with students enrolled in one public secondary school and in one degree in a public University, that belongs to the same "health area" in each province. The investigators also include families' and teachers' knowledge of the context because it can support the interventions of change proposals. Compassion will be assessed using the Compassion for the Lives of Others Scale (COOLS), comprising 26 items. Similarly, adolescents' attitudes toward death are another important concept and will be explored through the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), which has 15 questions. Both scales will be distributed to the adolescents, requesting their permission anonymously. After the survey, a second phase will start with a Participatory Action Research (PAR) with different activities. The objective is to generate awareness of the need to improve it, allowing the participants to design the interventions, based on evidence-based proposals (cinema forum, colloquiums with testimonies of volunteers accompanying palliative patients, organization of Death Cafe, artistic and literary activities, generation of grief groups, etc.). At the end of the project, the investigators will evaluate the adolescent compassion level and create discussion groups again to understand the impact of the interventions. With this project, the investigators will empower new generations of people to encourage, facilitate, support, and celebrate mutual care and family and community development in end-of-life processes. The translation and implications of the results for clinical practice will contribute to reducing inequalities in health research in a vulnerable group of special interest, especially when treatments can do nothing for their survival but with interventions such as those in this study, the investigators can ensure quality and dignity of life as long as there is life.
