Effect of Kinesiotape on Postural Control in Non-operated Anterior Cruciate Ligament Subjects

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common traumatic knee ligament injuries. This lesion has a devastating influence on patients' activity levels and quality of life. ACL injuries are most frequent between the ages of 15 and 45 years. Individuals who choose conservative treatment must undergo physical therapy to strengthen muscles around the knee, notably the quadriceps femoris and hamstring muscles. It had been described that in absence of surgical treatment, the knee remains unstable and vulnerable to injury having a much poorer prognosis. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of neuromuscular taping (kinesiotape) compared to placebo in patients with non-operated anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

Effectiveness of Basketball Pre-injury Attack Program to Reduce the Susceptibility of Injury in Youth Basketball Players

Basketball is an impact, coordination-opposition sport with continuous contact among players and it is considered a sport of medium-high injury incidence. Players are force to have a physical condition appropriate to their practice and the demand to which they must respond due to the intensity of the efforts this sport requires. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to establish an evaluation protocol that allows the detection of functional deficiencies, to guide and conduct in a specific and early way every moment of players' health and growth. The purpose of this study is to design, apply and analyze the effectiveness of a specific and individualized therapeutic exercise program (Basketball Pre-injury Attack) based on the approach of the functional deficiencies detected by the Basketball Injury Defense, to reduce the susceptibility to injury of youth basketball players (U14 - U17).

Early FES Cycling in Acute Spinal Cord Injury for Neuromuscular Preservation and Neurorecovery

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that often leads to paralysis and multiple health problems such as muscle wasting, bone loss and spasticity. Despite the paralysis, functional electrical stimulation (FES) on the skin surface muscles may produce muscle contractions. People who have had an SCI for a long time (chronic SCI) already use FES cycling to exercise, and it is known that it can reverse muscle atrophy and has a wide range of health benefits. Furthermore, animal research suggests that starting exercise training early after new SCI may promote spinal cord recovery. However, not much is known about early FES cycling in humans. Therefore, the investigators propose to study if early FES cycling could prevent muscle wasting, pain or spasticity, and help with spinal cord recovery. The study will recruit 36 participants with a new, acute SCI, between 14 and 21 days after their injury into 3 groups. An Early-FES group starts FES cycling early after injury (between 14 and 21 days after injury), and for a duration of 6 months. A Delayed-FES group starts FES cycling 3 months after enrolling in the study, and for a duration of 3 months. A Control group does not perform FES cycling. This pilot study will allow us to study if early FES cycling, in addition to normal care, has greater benefits on the preservation and recovery of the leg muscles and spinal cord function than delayed FES cycling or standard care only. The results of this pilot study may lead to the development of a larger study with early FES cycling after new SCI.

Real-World Experience of Patients Treated for Musculoskeletal Injuries With SAM in Routine Care

The purpose of this study is to evaluate continuous ultrasound treatment with diclofenac coupling patch during routine care of musculoskeletal injuries which failed conservative treatment to better understand clinical utilization of the treatment on types of injuries, how the treatment helps patients (pain, function and quality of life), and information on healthcare provider ordering the therapy and general workflow. Low-intensity continuous ultrasound (LICUS) is a bio regenerative technology used when normal rehabilitation is insufficient, applied with a wearable device (SAM, Zetroz Systems LLC) for daily use. The treatment provides long-duration ultrasound for approximately four hours. The objective of this study is to examine the real-world outcome data on symptoms improvement and return to function using SAM during routine care.

Examining the Effectiveness of DermGEN™ in the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers in First Nations People

The study will examine the effectiveness of a decellularized dermal matrix (i.e., DermGEN™) in improving wound healing, quality of life and associated costs of treatment of DFUs in First Nations people living in the Northwestern Ontario Communities. First Nations people with active diabetic foot (DFU) ulcer attending a wound care clinic located at the Rainy River district office. An interventional, two-arm, randomized, prospective study of (1) standard of care (control) vs. (2) DermGEN™ - a decellularized dermal matrix (treatment) will be used in the treatment and management of DFU. Patients will be randomized to each arm (n=60 per arm) based on power calculations using data from our Pilot study.

Animal Assisted Therapy After Pediatric Brain Injury: Mediators and Moderators of Treatment Response.

Children requiring inpatient rehabilitation treatment following acquired brain injury (ABI) are at risk for poor engagement in rehabilitative therapies. A within subject crossover design will be used to determine whether involving dogs in physical and occupational therapies while receiving inpatient rehabilitation improves patient engagement, how involving dogs improves engagement, and identify who is most likely to benefit. This project addresses the critical need to establish an evidence base for animal-assisted therapies in pediatric rehabilitation, incorporates innovative methods, and has the potential to lead to improved clinical care for children and adolescents receiving intensive rehabilitation following ABI.

Therapeutic Effect of Isogladine Maleate on Small Intestinal Mucosal Injury Associated With NSAIDS in Population

All patients who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study underwent baseline capsule endoscopy. Patients with intestinal mucosal injury detected during the initial capsule endoscopy were randomly divided into isoladin maleate group or magnesium aluminum carbonate control group using computer-generated random numbers. Patients in the isoladine maleate group received 4 mg isoladine maleate (Gesellon, Japan) every morning for 4 weeks (or 8 weeks, duration to be determined); Magnesium aluminum carbonate control group received 1 g magnesium aluminum carbonate every morning, afternoon and evening for 4 weeks (or 8 weeks, course to be determined). After treatment, capsule endoscopy was performed again to evaluate the healing of intestinal mucosa.

Investigators will conduct a retrospective chart review, examining the impact of chronic kidney disease on risk of myocardial injury after non cardiac surgery (MINS). The objective of this study is to examine interactions between preoperative Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) and the association between preoperative N-Terminal Pro B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) and post operative cardiac events in patients undergoing major non cardiac surgery.
