Filter by:The purpose of this project is to study whether a mindfulness-based training program supports self-regulation, resiliency, effective classroom behaviors, and persistence in teaching.
This study on women with breast cancer during and after chemo- and hormonal therapy compares the effect of different physical training programs on physical and mental well-being and systemic inflammation mechanisms in blood. In a sub-group of participants, mitochondrial biogenesis and function and other molecular processes in skeletal muscle biopsies are studied. The women will be randomly allocated into three different intervention arms, a control arm with usual care and two different training arms. All participants will respond to questionnaires and have blood samples and taken and for a subgroup muscle biopsies before and after the exercise intervention. Participants will be supported to uphold exercise through collaboration with Friskis & Svettis and followed for 5 years. Some of the women will also be asked to participate in an in depth interview about the experiences of exercise during ongoing treatment. This study will contribute to increased knowledge about the type, intensity and frequency of training that patients with breast cancer benefit most from with regards to impact on physical and mental wellbeing. This knowledge is of great importance since experience shows that patients and relatives often seek information about rehabilitation, self-care and physical activity. The study will also contribute to the improvement of the patients´ quality of life, ability to return to work, and reduce social costs, but above all, increase the possibility for development and implementation of evidence-based rehabilitation of women with breast cancer during and after active treatment.
Mindfulness can be considered as a family of complex attentional and emotional regulation strategies that promote the cultivation of well-being and emotional balance. The practice of mindfulness produces the development of a consciousness that unfolds moment to moment, open and unprejudiced in the present moment, here and now. Despite its extensive benefits, the practice of mindfulness requires a significant commitment in time and effort, which limits the potential for its dissemination. The studies to narrow the differential effects of the various exercises based on mindfulness, will further enhance their effectiveness and they can guide the practice sequence according to user needs. In this paper we will research mindfulness electroencephalographic correlates of as four different exercise programs included in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and stress reduction program based on mindfulness (MBSR) as well as its effect on several psychological variables.
The purpose of this research study is to examine whether a stress reduction intervention can improve health, mood and biological markers of cellular stress and aging in a group of chronically-stressed maternal caregivers and healthy maternal controls.
The investigators will recruit 450 older adults and will utilize 12 Administration on Aging (AoA)-supported senior centers to implement a multisite, cluster randomized (by center), wait-list clinical trial. Centers will be randomized to receive the choir program immediately (intervention group) or after a 6-month delayed intervention phase (control group). The community choirs will be led by professional music directors. The investigators will assess both primary and secondary outcomes at baseline, 6 and 12 months, with the main intervention group comparison being at 6 months. The investigators will also evaluate the start-up and ongoing program costs for senior centers, including cost/person served and determine quality adjusted life years. The hypotheses are: 1. Compared to delayed intervention controls, participation in a community choir program will be associated with improvements/maintenance on the primary outcomes of physical function (balance, walking speed, strength), depressive symptoms, and cognition (executive function and memory) at 6 months. The investigators also predict within-group improvements on these primary outcomes at 12 months. 2. Compared to delayed intervention controls, participation in a community choir program will be associated with improvements in the secondary outcomes of well-being (depressive symptoms, loneliness, resilience, social participation, health-related quality of life, shortness of breath, functional status, falls, and health services use) at 6 months. The investigators also predict within-group improvements on these secondary outcomes at 12 months.

In a rehabilitation setting, respiratory muscle training with re-expansion techniques in patients following cardio-thoracic surgery represents a consolidated intervention. New devices called RESPILIFT® and RESPIVOl® improve deep inspiration and pulmonary volume with an effect on respiratory muscle performance and perceived dispnoea. The aim of the investigators study is to test the clinical efficacy of RESPILIFT® and RESPIVOl® in patients with a recent history of cardio-thoracic surgery.
The purpose of the study is to determine if providing physicians with a walking workstation, exercise counseling, and accelerometer feedback about activity will increase physician activity.
The aim of the study is to investigate different novel IC technologies for promoting physical activity and health and preventing obesity in young men. The purpose is to provide new evidence-based knowledge on the effectiveness of an ICT-based physical activation and to identify factors predicting a positive response. Specific objectives - to identify the factors associated with physical activity and physical activity relationship in young men - to develop an interactive method, based on peer networks, aimed at activating young men with use of their own skills, participation and modern ICT - to assess the effectiveness of the chosen activation on the physical activity, weight, fitness, health, and relationship towards physical activity among young men The study population consists of all conscription aged men in the Oulu area in 2011-2013 (n=4000). Conscription-aged men provide a large, population based representative sample of young men. In Finland military service is mandatory and annually all 18-year old men are called for military service. In the call-ups fitness for service is determined based on medical examination. All those who are determined fit for service or who are granted postponement due to obesity will be invited for the activation intervention study. Those with severe obesity are exempted from service, but will also participate in the trial. After the call-up, the men will be randomised to an intervention group and a control group. The primary outcome variable is change in physical activity. The study will be conducted during 2011-2015. The study includes technology development (ICT platform), collection of cross-sectional data at the call-ups, and a 6-month physical activity intervention (a randomized controlled trial) implemented between the call-up and start of military service. Game mechanics are integrated into the ICT platform to increase user engagement and participation. Physical activity, fitness (aerobic and muscular), body composition,lifestyle and psychological and physical health will be followed. In addition, the subjects' entry into military service and its course will be followed.
Dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) is inversely associated with cognitive decline and dementia (e.g. Kalmijn et al. 2004, Heude et al. 2003, Morris et al. 2005, Dullemeijer et al. 2009). Recently, the effects of supplemental docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on behavioural outcomes in older adults has been explored, however two trials addressing this issue have published conflicting results regarding the efficacy of DHA supplementation, with one reporting a benefit of treatment on cognitive performance (Yurko-Mauro et al. 2010), while the other did not (Dangour et al. 2010). One area of research that has yet to be explored in this cohort is the effects of n-3 PUFAs on brain function in physiological terms. It is also possible that n-3 PUFAs, in combination with other compounds, may be more beneficial than treatment with n-3 PUFAs in isolation. The current study will explore several separate hypotheses within the same cohort. These are that Efalex Active 50+ may have a beneficial effect on: - Cognitive performance - Mental fatigue in response to cognitively demanding tasks - Self-reported mood/well-being - Task-related cerebral blood flow response The proposed study therefore has two aims; the primary aim is to evaluate the cognitive and mood/well-being effects of Efalex Active 50+, a dietary supplement containing a number of potentially cognition enhancing components including DHA, phosphatidylserine, vitamin B12, folic acid and Ginkgo biloba, compared with placebo in a sample of older adults aged 50-70 years (Cognitive Study). The second is to evaluate the cerebral haemodynamic effects of the same treatment formulation in a sample drawn from the same population, with the addition of a third DHA-only arm (Hemodynamics Study). The intervention period will be 6 months.
