De Por Vida: A Diabetes Risk Reduction Intervention for Hispanic Women

This pragmatic randomized clinical trial will assess the efficacy, cost, and sustainability of a culturally tailored weight-loss program targeting obese Hispanic women with pre-diabetes or T2D. The intervention will be integrated into patient care at a Federally Qualified Health Center serving over 30,000 low-income patients, and will be delivered by trained clinic staff, with minimal support from research staff. After the effectiveness clinical trial, two cohorts of clinic patients will receive the intervention in a sustainability test.

Functional Assessment of Ashwagandaha Root Extract During Weight Loss

The Effects of Capsinoids on Brown Adipose Tissue Activation in Obesity

This research study is being done to determine whether taking a dietary supplement called capsinoids, derived from sweet peppers, can activate brown fat that is already present or even generate new brown fat in individuals with excess weight. Previous studies have suggested that chronic consumption of capsinoids may be able to generate new brown fat in thin individuals. Capsinoids may also have a small positive effect on metabolism (increased calorie-burning) and fat loss. The knowledge gained in this study may eventually lead to more treatment options for people with excess weight.

In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of whey protein supplementation given before night sleep on Fat Free Mass (FFM) preservation during a 4 wk period on Very Low Caloric Diet (VLCD). Serum Concentration of Tranexamic Acid After Topical Administration in Massive Weight Loss Skin Reducing Surgery

Tranexamic acid is a drug that prevents clotted blood from dissolving and hence reduces bleeding. It is routinely given intravenously in many surgical situations where there is a risk of major bleeding. Concerns regarding possible adverse effects from intravenous use prevents a more widespread use, even in smaller surgeries. Topical application - using the drug directly on the wound surface- may give a higher concentration at the site of bleeding but a lower concentration in the rest of the body, and hence a lower risk of adverse effects. Here it will be investigated to what extent a defined dose of the drug is absorbed systemically - into the blood stream - when it is applied topically. This will then be compared to the concentration in the blood stream when administered intravenously. Blood samples will be obtained at defined time intervals after administration from patients receiving topical and patients receiving intravenous administration of the same single dose of tranexamic acid. Will less of the drug enter the blood stream if it is applied directly to the wound?

High Quality Protein for Assisting With Weight Loss

The purpose of this study is to determine if, in presence of a reduced calorie diet, a breakfast containing high quality protein source (eggs) would be more effective in reducing hunger and increasing feeling of fullness compared to a breakfast containing a lower quality of protein, but equal energy density. A previous pilot study with the same endpoints yielded borderline significant results; this study has been powered based on that pilot to interrogate our hypotheses.

Addressing Place and People Micro Environments in Weight Loss Disparities

The purpose of this study is to A) capture obesogenic cues that occur in daily life, and B) to deliver cue alerts. Investigators hypothesized that A) black women experience more cues, B) racial disparities in obesity are reduced in models that adjust for cues, and C) the priming arm will achieve a weight loss of 2kg or more. Investigators will explore whether racial disparities in weight loss differ between the groups receiving usual care or those receiving cues.
