Efficacy and Safety of SPD476 in Maintaining Remission in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the large bowel (colon) and rectum in which the lining of the bowel becomes red and swollen. Over time, patients with this disease may experience acute episodes of diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal pain followed by periods of time without disease symptoms. 5-ASA drugs are a standard treatment for ulcerative colitis. Mesalazine is an experimental drug designed to gradually release 5-ASA into the areas of large bowel associated with ulcerative colitis. This study will test the safety and efficacy of mesalazine in keeping ulcerative colitis in remission.

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy in Ulcerative Colitis

Based on the inaccuracies of the current classification scheme for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the failure of surgical pouches and the findings of retrospective observational trials to date, we hypothesize that a significant proportion of patients with UC will have small bowel involvement that will result in a change in diagnosis to CD or the recognition of a new phenotype of IBD. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of small bowel pathology in patients diagnosed with UC using WCE. This information will aid in the current efforts to re-classify IBD using improved endoscopic and imaging technologies, genetic information and serologic information.

Celebrex Low Dose ASA Study Examining the Incidence of Gastroduodenal Ulcers in a Healthy Population

The aim of the current study is to replicate the COXA-0508-258 study in a multicenter, US setting, using a lower dose of ASA. It is expected that this study will not only confirm the results of the 258 study but show that the incidence of UGI ulcers on celecoxib is significantly less than on traditional NSAIDs and the incidence of UGI ulcers on celecoxib increases with the addition of ASA, but still is lower than traditional NSAIDs plus/minus ASA. This 7-day study is designed to compare the incidence of gastroduodenal ulcers associated with celecoxib 200 mg QD and low dose aspirin 81 mg QD and with naproxen 500 mg BID plus low dose aspirin 81 mg QD in healthy adults(50-75 years of age).

Improving Diabetic Foot Ulcers With Atorvastatin

Lower limb complications are a substantial matter in the diabetic population and studies show that the annual incidence of foot ulcers ranges from 1.0-4.1% while the cumulative lifetime incidence is approximately 15%. Foot ulcers may become complicated by infection or gangrene, and ultimately result in amputation. In addition, foot ulcers have a significant impact on quality of life (QoL). The treatment of diabetic foot ulcers has not made substantial progress in recent years with regards to improved healing although there have been several actions taken to update the process. The current practice consists of wound debridement, treatment of underlying infections and pressure relief. This trial investigates the adjunctive effects of high (80 mg) or low (10 mg) dose atorvastatin to conventional treatment on the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

Healing and preventing these wounds should be a high priority for clinicians treating these high-risk patients. Previous work by the investigators has suggested that diabetic foot ulcers are preceded by inflammation, which can potentially be detected with a thermometer.
