Filter by:The purpose of this study is to assess the cessation success rates of an intensive tobacco treatment program in a patients undergoing cancer treatment at 30 days, 3 months and 6 months.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is caused primarily by smoking and smoking cessation is the first-line treatment for slowing disease progression. Despite this, nearly 50% of COPD patients continue to smoke following diagnosis. Smokers with COPD report high rates of co-occurring conditions - nicotine dependence, depression, and anxiety - which serve as barriers to quitting. The current study will pilot test a behavioral intervention designed to target the common psychological factors underlying these co-occurring conditions and foster smoking cessation among COPD patients.

This project aims to help patients improve their health through screening and treatment of risky alcohol and tobacco use. Previous studies show the best approach to reduce substance use includes routine screening, short discussions with a clinician, and tailored resources. Unfortunately, primary care providers (PCPs) do not often screen or provide evidence-based interventions. PCPs report lack of confidence, lack of awareness, and competing priorities as barriers to screening and providing evidence-based care. However, digital solutions can enable patient-initiated screening and overcome barriers in a manner that has the potential to be both efficient and effective. The proposed project will test the feasibility of digital patient-initiated screening at the WCH Family Practice (WCH FP) for alcohol and tobacco use, building on work from the first iteration of Screen While You Wait (SWYW). The research team will email patients a secure link to a survey with screening questions assessing substance use and important contextual factors. The results will be summarized in the patient's chart with an automatic notification to the PCP. If the survey reveals risky behaviours, both the PCP and patient will receive a package of tailored resources for further care delivered through a customized website.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a smoking cessation outreach intervention (TeaM OUT) on increasing use of smoking cessation resources in Veterans. The hypotheses are 1) patients included in the TeaM OUT group will have higher accession of cessation services, such as counseling and medication therapies, compared to patients in enhanced usual care and 2) more patients in the TeaM OUT group will have quit smoking at one year after the intervention. Veterans with a recently diagnosed lung nodule who currently smoke will receive the TeaM OUT intervention or Enhanced Usual Care. The TeaM OUT intervention has 2 parts: 1) a letter that a) describes the nodule and the importance of cessation related to the pulmonary nodule (i.e. teachable moment) and b) notification that a Proactive IVR Quit Line will initiate contact and 2) call(s) from the Proactive IVR Quit Line which a) offers smoking cessation resources and b) helps connect the patient to those resources. The enhanced usual care group will receive a letter that provides information about how to contact the IVR Quit Line. The IVR system will track referrals to cessation services. Additional information about smoking status and use of cessation resources will be collected from the electronic health record and surveys. .
Tobacco use is one of the world's leading preventable causes of disease and premature death, and the physician has a central role in detecting smokers and helping them to quit. Tobacco use in the military undermines fitness, readiness and performance, and increases health care costs. A study conducted on a French Army contingent on external operations in Afghanistan have shown an increase in tobacco use in situation of operational constraints (stress, shift work, etc.). However, another study conducted in Ivory Coast on a mobile gendarmerie squadron showed no significant difference. Among the American firefighters who have been exposed to the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, smoking have been shown to play an aggravating role in the recovery of lung function. This study is aimed at assessing smoking prevalence in the Paris Fire Brigade, which is composed of young and healthy sportsmen and women who are exposed to strong operational constraints.
This study will evaluate exposure to tar and nicotine from two cigarette products that contain a menthol capsule in the filter, and provide a basis for comparing mouth-level exposure when smokers smoke the two cigarette products.
The aim of this pilot intervention is to examine the acceptability of a harm reduction intervention approach to tobacco use for individuals with serious behavioral health disorders and its association with a decrease in smoking. The intervention uses a "dynamic" approach to patient choice, allowing participants the option to explore different strategies for harm reduction, while providing support from counselors in the process. Therefore, the investigators have chosen an observational study design in order to document and explore the acceptability and outcomes of the intervention.
This open label, between-subject, randomized multi-center pilot study will assess the feasibility of conducting a study remotely with telehealth visits to assess the effect of cigarettes with minimal filter ventilation vs. moderate filter ventilation on smoking behavior and biomarkers of tobacco toxicant exposure. Subjective measures, alveolar carbon monoxide, blood pressure and cigarettes per a day will be collected remotely. Biological samples will be collected at home and mailed to the study clinic.
