Filter by:The aim of the study, is to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Italy on a regional basis, defined according to National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP/ATPIII) guidelines criteria.
In the United States cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 1 in every 2.8 deaths and is the leading cause of death among men and women 65 years or older (1). Studies have shown that the risk for cardiovascular disease is higher in individuals with the Metabolic Syndrome (2). Metabolic Syndrome (MBS) is defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) guidelines as a group of risk factors that includes 3 or more of the following: abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high fasting glucose (3). These factors place individuals at increased risk for the development of both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus (3). It is commonly held that insulin resistance is the driving force for the development of the MBS. Although there is a significant increase in incidence of MBS in the elderly, there are few studies that specifically examined MBS in that population. The prevailing opinion is that the strikingly high prevalence of the MBS in the elderly is due to concurrent obesity - i.e., the population gains weight as it ages, and development of the MBS accompanies the weight gain. However, while it is true that becoming obese may decrease insulin sensitivity, it has also been demonstrated that not all obese individuals are insulin resistant. Some studies suggest that up to 40% of obese individuals demonstrate normal insulin sensitivity (4). In addition, it is notable that the rate of increasing MBS in the population exceeds that of the rate of increasing BMI, suggesting that, while BMI may be a modulating factor, another factor independent of obesity also contributes to the development of MBS in the elderly. It is the investigators hypothesize that the MBS in the obese elderly population is primarily linked to insulin resistance and not to obesity per se. The investigators propose to test this hypothesis by assessing MBS and insulin resistance in a population of obese elderly men and women and then determining whether or not the MBS tracks with insulin resistance.
Primary objective: - assessment of the prevalence of AHI1 mutations in Joubert syndrome and cerebello-oculo-renal syndromes (JS/CORS) Secondary objective: - assessment of the prevalence of CEP290 mutations and NPHP1 homozygous deletions in JS/CORS - caracterization of mutational spectrum of AHI1, NPHP1, CEP290 genes in JS/CORS. - evaluation of genotype-phenotype correlation in JS/CORS.
The study consists of the realization of a new esophageal stimulation for patients already stimulated 10 years ago. The investigators would like to make a long term evaluation of the evolution of anterograde effective refractory period of accessory duct in the WPW syndrome. This study will be realized by esophageal stimulation.
The EVE-PMS technology is intended for determination of intolerance or sensitivity to sex hormones, among women suffering from severe PreMenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and desensitizes them with the relevant sex hormones in order to reduce PMS symptoms. The system includes skin testing panel for identification of hormones to which the patients might be sensitive. Tests are applied close to the ovulation period and the skin reaction is examined in 20 minutes, 48 hours and daily during the following month. Results of skin tests and patient's history will determine the eligibility of the patients to enter a desensitization protocol. During the desensitization period hormones to which the patient were found sensitive to, are injected intradermally three times (once a month) within the luteal phase in increasing doses. The end-point of the study is a statistically significant decrease, or elimination of PMS symptoms, compared to a solvent group.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness and adverse effects of 3,4-diaminopyridine for the treatment of the Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) and Congenital Myasthenic Syndromes (CMS).
The restless leg syndromes is a common sensorimotor disorder of unknown cause affecting approximately 10% of the population. Different literature had different views on the association between neuraxial anesthesia and the occurrence of restless leg syndrome. Some reported that spinal anesthesia induced postoperative restless leg syndrome, but other studies showed that spinal and general anesthesia all two did not cause restless leg syndrome. A potential difference amongst these studies is that a big difference exists in surgical types. The investigators proposed that different types of surgery performed undergoing various anesthesia, and that there is a big difference in original pathophysiological condition. Therefore, the investigators hypothesized that pregnant women who have special physical states would have had an association between neuraxial anesthesia and restless leg syndrome in such patients who received selective cesarean section undergoing spinal or epidural anesthesia.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether obese people do not respond to hepatitis C treatment as well as lean people. This research studies whether obese people will show higher sustained virologic response rate if they lose weight by Orlistat use and dietary and lifestyle modification.
This is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, semi-blinded study to compare two low doses of estradiol administered by recently available transdermal patches for the initiation of puberty in Turner syndrome girls 11.5-13.0 years old in conjunction with growth hormone (GH) therapy. The specific hypotheses to be tested are: when combined with growth hormone (GH) treatment, low dose transdermal estradiol (LTE2) replacement will be more effective in stimulating feminization, height velocity, and bone mineral density without compromising growth potential than very low dose transdermal estradiol (VLTE2), which will in turn be superior to GH alone in effects on feminization, height velocity, and bone mineral density.
This is a treatment protocol using IND Ribavirin-there is no control group. Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) is caused by a virus acquired by contact with chronically infected rodent hosts. HFRS is present throughout Europe and caused mainly by Puumala and Dobrava viruses. Treatment consists mainly of supportive care with careful attention to control of blood pressure and fluid balance and/or dialysis. Early initiation of IND Intravenous Ribavirin has been shown to be an effective treatment for HFRS and may prevent the need for dialysis. It is important to initiate therapy based on a diagnosis consistent with HFRS (determination if the disease is caused by Puumala or Dobrava virus is helpful) and a history that makes exposure likely. This study will monitor the clinical events that occur with HFRS as well as the safety and efficacy of Ribavirin.
