Filter by:Integrating Intergenerational Cultural Knowledge Exchange with Zero Suicide is an innovative study in a Southwestern tribal nation that incorporates Zero Suicide into Indian Health Services (IHS) primary care settings. The goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Zero Suicide plus a cultural component (ZS+) (experimental group) compared to Zero Suicide (ZS) alone (control group) on suicidal ideation, behaviors, and resiliency in a randomized control trial of 138 AI youth ages 12-24 at two rural IHS clinics on the Pueblo of San Felipe. The long-term goal of this study is to determine which is more effective at reducing suicidal ideation and behaviors and increasing resiliency, ZS+ or ZS alone. Year 1 will focus on training providers on the Zero Suicide model and manualizing the Katishtya Intergenerational Culture Knowledge Seminars (KICKS) curriculum that was piloted and positively evaluated over the past three summers as a cultural module to improve the adoption and acceptability of Zero Suicide. Years 2-4 will focus on participant recruitment, assignment to experimental and control groups, and implementation. Year 5 will focus on data analysis and dissemination. Data will be collected from all experimental and control group participants at 4 time points: baseline, 12-weeks, 6-months and 9-months to explore the effects of the intervention over time. The central hypothesis is that ZS+ will be more effective then ZS alone. The investigators propose three aims: (1) Specific Aim 1: Using Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), partner with tribal stakeholders and researchers to formally manualize the KICKS cultural module for Zero Suicide (ZS+); (2) Specific Aim 2: To determine if adding a cultural component to the Zero Suicide model is more effective at reducing risk factors and increasing resiliency in AI youth than Zero Suicide alone; and (3) Specific Aim 3: Determine the essential features of the KICKS module for adaptation by other tribes and disseminate the model.
This cross-sectional, anonymous online survey aims to examine how salient variables influence PTSS, well-being, and suicidal ideation across the following professions of rescue workers: firefighters, ambulance personnel, police officers, and emergency and psychiatric nurses. PTSS, coping strategies, well-being, suicidal ideation, previously experienced and work-related trauma, and self-efficacy were measured and analyzed using multiple regression and structural equation modeling.
In this 2-site study, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC), the investigators will conduct a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in 240 psychiatrically hospitalized suicidal adolescents, examining the single and additive effects of two components of an inpatient unit intervention for suicidal adolescents, As Safe As Possible (ASAP), which focuses on emotion regulation and safety planning, and an emotion regulation/safety plan phone app (BRITE).
This study aims to examine whether multiple spaced sessions of intermittent theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (iTBS) induce anti-depressant responses and reduce opiate cravings in adults with opiate use disorder (OUD). Additionally, we hope to identify whether the effectiveness of iTBS is related to changes in functional connectivity between particular brain areas.
The objective of the current study is to investigate the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of multiple doses of intranasal (IN) ketamine for suicidal ideation Veterans.
The overall goal for the proposed project is to test the effectiveness of BCBT for the prevention of suicide attempts in a sample of treatment-seeking U.S. military personnel and veterans. The standard null hypothesis will involve tests conducted comparing improvement following BCBT (treatment duration of 12 weeks) to Person-Centered Therapy (PCT). The primary outcome comparisons will include direct markers of suicidality (i.e. suicide, suicide attempts). Secondary outcomes will be suicide ideation and indicators of psychiatric distress (e.g., depression, hopelessness). We also aim to assess several hypothesized psychological and neurocognitive mediators of treatment effects (e.g., wish to live, attentional bias, emotion regulation). Participants will be followed for 2 years posttreatment by independent evaluators blind to treatment condition.
Most clinical major depression responds to standard treatments (medication and psychotherapy); however, a significant subset of depressed patients (15-20%) do not respond to these treatments and are referred to as treatment-resistant major depression (TRMD). New treatments for TRMD are needed, and one promising line of research are drugs known as N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonists. In a recent pilot study, the investigators of this study demonstrated that the NMDA antagonist nitrous oxide is effective in TRMD, reducing depressive symptoms, guilt, and suicidal thinking. To more closely investigate suicidal thinking, this study is designed as a double-blind, randomized, prospective, inpatient trial comparing inhaled nitrous oxide (N2O) plus treatment as usual versus inhaled placebo plus treatment as usual. All unipolar depressed, acutely suicidal inpatients will receive standard treatment for their depression/ suicidal thinking (TAU). Additionally, participants will undergo a maximum of four one hour inhalation sessions as inpatients and 2 booster sessions as outpatients during which they will receive either inhaled nitrous oxide (50% nitrous oxide/50% oxygen = active treatment) or placebo gas (50% nitrogen/50% oxygen). A target total of 50 patients with suicidal ideation and unipolar depression will be enrolled, 25 of whom will be assigned to the TAU control group and 25 of whom will be assigned to the N2O + TAU experimental group.
This within-person, crossover, 2-condition, placebo-controlled study compares the impact of two perimenstrual conditions on severity of suicidal symptoms in females with past-month suicidality but minimal risk of imminent suicide attempt. The two conditions are (1) natural perimenstrual withdrawal from estradiol and progesterone (during placebo), (2) perimenstrual stabilization of estradiol and progesterone using transdermal estradiol and oral micronized progesterone.
Sleep and appetite disorders as well as social exclusion, have been linked to the emergence of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts.This study aims to evaluate the relationship between those factors and suicidal ideation and behaviour. To assess those factors an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) desing will be used. EMA will be carried out using 2 applications integrated into the smartphone of participants (Android or iOS), one to make an explicit data collection with questions and another one for the implicit collection of data from mobile sensors. 1044 suicide attempters will be included in three sites and followed for 6 months. Participants will be evaluated at inclusion and at the end of follow-up. The hypothesis is that sleep, appetite and social exclusion factors collected with the smartphone application will be linked to the intensity of death wish, suicidal ideations and suicidal attempts. An auxiliary study will also be led with 300 patients carrying an actimeter for the 30 first days after inclusion. This will help collecting more accurate data on various sleep parameters.
This multi-site, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled mechanistic trial aims to test the effects of Magnus Neuromodulation System (MNS) with Stanford Accelerated Intermittent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT®) Technology on the neural circuitry of suicidal cognitions in psychiatrically hospitalized patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and active suicidal ideation (SI). This will be accomplished by applying the MNS with SAINT to a customized target within the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) identified with fMRI for five consecutive days and measuring resting-state functional connectivity (RS FC) between the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) and the default mode network (DMN) at baseline and immediate-post visit. The relationship between changes in RS FC and changes in both Explicit and Implicit Suicidal Cognitions (ESC and ISC, respectively) will be determined. This study will also determine the relationship between changes in RS FC in neural networks underlying mediators of suicidal cognitions and changes in such mediators with active versus sham SAINT.
