Periodontal Health and Its Relationship With Psychological Stress

Studies suggest that chronic exposure to psychological stress can lead to oral health deterioration, alter the immune response, and possibly contribute to increased inflammation, which can impact the physiological healing of periodontal tissues. People with psychophysiological stress disorders tend to acquire unhealthy habits, leading to less self-care, incorrect nutrition, smoking, alcohol consumption, and reduced physical activity. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the correlation between periodontal health and psychological stress. Patients between the ages of 35 and 70 will be recruited. Each patient must be visited and a periodontal assessment must be performed, recording the percentage of bleeding on probing and the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR). Subsequently, patients will be administered the Sheldon Cohen Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Mindfulness Awareness Attention Scale (MAAS) questionnaires.

The Effect of Mindfulness on Psychophysiological Stress in a Population With Elevated Stress Symptoms

Stress-related disorders have over the last decade increased and contributed to a worldwide disease burden. At the same time there is limited treatment access for mental health disorders, which has left many people without necessary care. However, in recent years there has been a rise in digital mindfulness interventions. Specifically, these interventions have focused on smartphone-based applications as an effective format for mindfulness training programs. Thus, the goal of this randomized controlled trial is to test the effects of three types of mindfulness programs in a population with elevated stress. The three formats of mindfulness interventions are identical in total training duration but varies in content and intervention length. Specifically, the first intervention consists of programmatic mindfulness content that progress over the course of 30 sessions with a duration of 10 min per session. The second intervention consists of single succinct breathing exercises with no programmatic content over the course of 30 sessions with a duration of 10 min per session. The third intervention consists of mindfulness-based content specifically targeted to people with elevated stress that progress over the course of 20 sessions with a duration of 15 min per session. An active control group listening to an audiobook over the course of 30 sessions with a duration of 10 min per session will be employed and a passive control group. The study will evaluate outcomes related to subjective stress, sleep quality, mindfulness and physiological effects of stress using HRV.

Trier Social Stress Test in Virtual Reality

Background The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) is a valid and gold standard way for inducing psychosocial stress and is widely used in research and diagnostics. One of the downsides of the TSST is the difficulty to maintain the same experimental conditions repeatedly. A TSST in virtual reality (TSST-VR) is constant and requires far less time and personnel. Our TSST-VR version consist of three stress levels (no stress, moderate stress, high stress), a novelty in this field. Aim The aim is to investigate whether there is a statistically significantly greater increase directly after the TSST-VR in psychological and physiological stress parameters in the moderate and high stress levels compared to the no stress condition (control). Method A randomized controlled trial is conducted in healthy adults, with the three stress levels as conditions. Cortisol and questionnaires on anxiety and physical arousal are measured at baseline, during and after the TSST. Heart rate is measured continuously and adverse events are monitored.

Tailored Ecological Momentary Music Intervention for Stress Reduction

Ethnic discrimination is associated with mental and physical health impairments. In view of the negative impact of discrimination on health, it is of great importance to investigate interventions to counteract these negative effects. Based on findings of a pilot study (clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT04957966), this study investigates the effectiveness of a tailored ecological momentary music intervention to reduce biological (salivary cortisol, salivary alpha-amylase) and psychological (perceived stress, perceived ethnic discrimination) stress reactions after discriminatory and/or stressful events in the daily life of Turkish immigrant women (N = 50, age range 18-65 years). An intra-individually randomized design will be used, i.e., participants will be assigned on a random basis either to intervention events (they can choose to listen to music for the duration of 10 or 20 minutes) or to control events (participants are instructed to not listen to music). The whole study period consists of 35 days with a baseline period (week 1), intervention period (week 2-4), and post period (week 5).

Systemic Stress Prevention Via Application SysLife© for Companies

The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of systemic stress prevention via SysLife© application in a prospective, interventive, balanced, monocentric, explanatory pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT), with participants' subjective stress experience as the primary endpoint. Research Question: Which implementations are necessary, based on the experience from this pilot RCT, to ensure the quality of a subsequent confirmatory RCT? Hypothesis: We expect improvement of participants' subjective stress experience, goal achievement, systemic functioning in private and organisational social systems while using the SysLife© application.

Virtual Reality to Cope With Academic Stress

The new technologies may facilitate the teaching-learning process through the ubiquitous and active approach. However, stress from academic exams remains being high among undergraduate students. Although new technologies could be useful to simulate and control academic stressful situations through immersive virtual reality, no studies to date have evaluated its effectiveness. This study is designed to evaluate the effects of a virtual reality program to visualize stressful academic situations like exams on the level of psychological and physiological stress and academic performance of Physiotherapy and Nursing undergraduate students. To this end, an experimental study with two experimental groups and one control group is designed: experimental group 1 (EG1) will complete a 4-weeks program of guided visualization of exams through immersive virtual reality; experimental group 2 (EG2) will complete a 4-weeks program of traditional guided visualization of exams (through audio); control group (CG) will not receive any visualization program, as the most habitual strategy to cope with exams among students. Before and after the intervention period, all students will fulfill an online questionnaire to inform about their level of academic stress (SISCO inventory) and perceived stress from the last month (Perceived Stress Scale). Also, just before starting the exam they will have been visualizing, level of stress (0 to 10 points), blood pressure (mmHg), maximal heart rate (ppm) and salivary cortisol level will be assessed in all students. Qualifications of the exam will be also collected. Intra-group differences and between-group differences at post-intervention time will be obtained.

Effects of Stress on Team Coordination and Performance

Healthcare teams often encounter challenging circumstances where they must deliver high-quality care. For a team to function effectively, its members must not only be individually competent, but they also need to collaborate and cooperate using their respective expertise. Such teams often work under high stress situations, where they need to make high stakes decisions under conditions of uncertainty, time-sensitivity and variable levels of control. Research shows that such emergency situations provoke stress responses in individuals, which can impair attention, memory, reasoning, and decision-making. However, it remains unclear how individual-level stress responses influence team communication, coordination, and performance. The aims of this study are to a) compare team coordination, communication, and performance in low stress versus high stress simulated emergency situations; and b) characterize the relationship between teams' stress profiles and the teams' performance and coordination. The study will be a within-subject experimental design, with teams serving as their own controls. Teams of emergency medicine residents and nurses will participate in two simulation scenarios: one in a low stress condition, and the other in a high stress condition (counterbalanced across the teams).

C-STRESS: A Mental Health App for College Students With Depression

The goal of this pilot study is to examine the feasibility of the prototype C-STRESS app with 3 college students from UCI with clinically significant depression (scored ≥ 10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9). The main question it aims to answer is: whether the prototype C-STRESS is useful for college students to manage daily stress and depression symptoms. Participants were asked to use the C-STRESS app daily for 6 weeks to participate in CBCT lessons, watch guided meditation videos, complete short reflective exercises, and engage with other content provided in C-STRESS (i.e., attending drop-in sessions, journaling, completing mood and wellbeing check-ins, and reading educational articles on depression, anxiety, and stress). At the end of week 3 and 6, participants completed 6 online surveys (System Usability Scale, Technology Acceptance Model, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, General Anxiety Disorder-7, Health Related Quality of Life-4, and Brief-COPE) to assess C-STRESS's usability/feasibility and changes in depressive symptoms and coping styles over the study period.

Psycho-educational Training in Undergraduate Students at the University of Granada (Spain). Second Edition

The new professional profiles highlight the need to incorporate competences such as self-regulation, communication or growth mindset in the academia. Not only is this important for employability; a step further is needed. It's necessary to equip learners with knowledge, skills and attitudes that help them become agents of change and shape sustainable futures in our current complex society. Within the framework of an agreement signed between the University of Granada (UGR), Spain, and, one of the leading real state firms in Spain, Cívitas, a course and a parallel study have been launched that will provide research and training in these competences at a degree level. It is part of the Sustainable Human Development Training Pathway of the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Inclusion and Sustainability. The main objective of the study is to test whether participating in a competence-based course can improve students' cognitive, emotional and personal traits as well as academic performance. Together with this main purpose, the present study also aims to compare the effects of two competence-based programs on the students' ability to improve specific aspects of cognition, emotional intelligence, creativity or academic performance among others. Both programs involve training sustained attention and an accepting and open attitude though they differ in several aspects of their methods, intention and aims. Drawing conclusions from the research and outcomes, pedagogies which are best suited to develop theses competences at the Higher Education level will be suggested. Assessment and certification of this kind of competences will also be proposed.
