Filter by:Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) compose a substantial proportion of the global burden of diseases, posing a significant challenge in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. In particular, certain lifestyle-related risk factors, such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and sleep deprivation are the leading risk factors, which place people at an increased risk of developing NCDs. On the other hand, a growing phenomenon of excessive concern about diet and health is emerging, and it is contributing to the development of a novel eating behavior disorder named orthorexia nervosa. According to recent studies, orthorexic behavior is very common among young adults and especially so in health-care professionals. The main objective of this multi-center study is to explore and compare lifestyle habits among undergraduate medical students and other healthcare-related professions from different countries (Croatia, Lebanon, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Turkey). The goal is to obtain information on the presence of unhealthy habits in order to be able to intervene, offering the information needed for primordial disease prevention in this young and still healthy group of respondents, who are the health educators and role models of the future. The particular importance of this goal is to raise awareness of the problem of the ubiquitously present unhealthy lifestyles. Unfortunately, health-care students are not the exception regarding the prevalence of the unhealthy diet, sedentary behavior, sleep deprivation and high levels of psychological stress. Furthermore, the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle patterns in health-care workers, such as doctors and nurses, will have far-reaching negative consequences, in both their health and their patients' health. The results of this study will be used for identifying the needs and targets for intervention, enabling students to become a pillar of health education for their patients and the population in general.
The researchers would like to know how long pregnant women spend in different positions during the night - and how often women change positions - across pregnancy. The researchers also want to see if the sleep monitor is able to improve sleep behaviors
This study is in line with the UAEs national drive to promote happiness and wellbeing. University students risk impaired psychological health, wellbeing, and sleep due to academic pressures. This research is the first to assess the feasibility of using a laughter prescription to improve psychological health and sleep in Zayed University students. Forty students will be recruited, and randomized to a control or laughter group.
Memory influences emotional well being. Research has shown that having a negative emotional bias contributes to both emotion dysregulation and depression. Conversely, reactivating positive memories has been shown to reduce stress and symptoms of depression. In young adults, sleep is widely implicated in emotional processing, including consolidation of emotional memories. Evidence suggests that aging is associated with changes in emotion, including a positive memory bias and enhanced emotional well-being. These changes have been termed the "age-related positivity effect." However, the influence of sleep on these measures has not been investigated in healthy older individuals. The objective of this research is to understand the role of sleep in emotional memory consolidation and emotional well-being across adulthood. We hypothesize that sleep contributes to the age-related positivity effect in memory and affect. Our alternative hypothesis is that age-related decreases in sleep are responsible for reduced emotional memory processing over healthy aging.
This is an interventional study that will examine how sedentary behavior (decreased physical inactivity) over time affects cardiovascular health (i.e. heart rate and blood pressure) and sleep quality/duration.
Overweight/obesity and inadequate sleep are prevalent, and frequently co-occurring, health risks among children, both of which are associated with serious medical and psychosocial health complications including risk for cardiovascular disease. Although the investigator's data suggest that disrupted or shortened sleep may be causally associated with increased energy intake and weight gain in children, and with self-regulation and neural response to food cues in adults, understanding of mechanisms involved in the sleep/eating association is incomplete, thereby impeding development of targeted, optimally timed intervention strategies. The proposed mechanistic clinical trial aims to assess the effects of an experimental sleep manipulation on eating-related self-regulation and its neural substrates, and on real-world eating behavior, among children with overweight/obesity, which will help guide research efforts towards the refinement of prevention and intervention strategies targeting sleep and its eating-related correlates to curb weight gain throughout development.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a well-known disorder of upper airways collapse during sleep time leading to oxygen desaturation and sleep fragmentation. Despite being increasingly recognized as cardiovascular risk, the effect of OSA on clinical outcomes after Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is not fully defined. Also, OSA syndrome is highly prevalent in ACS and may be related to the deterioration of cardiac function resulting in worsening of the severity of sleep apnea or the intermittent hypoxia could be cardio-protective via the ischemic preconditioning event. Serial sleep studies have shown the progressive reduction of the Apnea / Hypopnea Index (AHI) from the admission in Coronary Care Unit (CCU) to 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 6-month follow up, making necessary to re-assess the severity of OSA after discharge. Therefore, further research in this field is necessary to screen and predict those ACS patients who may experience a change in their AHI index over time.
Major surgery can lead to postoperative disturbances in sleep patterns with subjective deterioration of sleep quality according to patients' reports as well as objective alterations of sleep architecture, as recorded by polysomnography Factors implicated in postoperative sleep disturbances include but are not limited to the severity of the surgical procedure, the neuroendocrine response to surgery, inadequate treatment of postoperative pain and external factors interfering with sleep, such as light, noise and therapeutic procedures There are no adequate data from current literature as to whether regional anesthesia is superior to general anesthesia regarding postoperative sleep quality in patients subjected to either mode of anesthesia. So, the aim of this study will be to assess the effect of two different anesthetic techniques (general versus regional) in patients subjected to similar operations Patients will be assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire (PSQI), regarding preoperative and long term postoperative sleep quality and sleep diaries regarding early postoperative sleep quality
Physical activity is closely associated with well-being condition and health development. The sleep quality and fatigue levels of individuals are also important components of health. Within the scope of our study, it is aimed to investigate the physical activity levels, sleep quality and fatigue levels of the academicians, who are generally working on a desk and we think that they live a sedentary life. Within the scope of this study, academicians were asked to respond to , International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-Short Form), general evaluation form, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) .
The specific objective of this proposed research is to understand whether deficits in sleep-dependent memory changes reflect age-related changes in sleep, memory, or both. The central hypothesis is that changes in both memory and sleep contribute to age-related changes in sleep-dependent memory processing. To this end, the investigators will investigate changes in learning following intervals of sleep (overnight and nap) and wake in young and older adults.
