Filter by:The purpose of this study was to determine whether reduced exposure to indoor air pollution would reduce ALRI incidence in children <18 months of age. Households were randomized to receive a chimney stove (intervention group) or continue using an open fire for cooking and heating (control group).
Currently, there is no standard treatment for influenza with related lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children younger than one year of age, even though influenza related LRTI is a potentially fatal illness in these children. This study will test a medicine for influenza in children younger than one year of age to see if it is safe and effective.
This single-center, randomized, double-blind and controlled study aims to examine the effect of a fermented dairy product containing the probiotic Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 (Actimel® = tested product) on the incidence of respiratory and gastro-intestinal common infectious diseases (cumulated number of infections during the intervention period: primary criteria), and on immune functions in healthy shift workers. Volunteers received either 200g/day of tested product (N=500) or control product (N=500) for 3-months, followed by a 1-month follow-up.
This study is a randomized, investigator blind, subject blind, sponsor-open, placebo controlled, multiple dose escalating, sequential, parallel cohort study of PF-04287881. Subjects will undergo screening procedures within 28 days prior to dosing. At least 1 day after the Screening visit, eligible subjects who meet the entry criteria will be admitted to the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and confined in the unit until discharge on Day 15. Approximately 60 healthy volunteers (20 volunteers of Japanese origin for Cohorts 5 and 6), 18 to 55 years of age, males and females (women of non childbearing potential only) will be enrolled and randomized in a 4:1 ratio to treatment with either PF-04287881 or placebo within each cohort. Each cohort will have a 10 day dosing period and each will consist of 10 subjects (8 active and 2 placebo). In each cohort, each subject will receive a single daily oral dose of either placebo or PF-04287881 under fasted state for 10 days.
Recently, the emergence and rapid global dissemination of novel swine-origin influenza A virus (H1N1) with unique epidemiologic characteristics has heightened awareness and concern of this viral pathogen, and its potential for major disruption of both civil and military stability. Although advances in medical and scientific technologies have improved our basic understanding of respiratory disease, many questions about the epidemiology and immunology of ARI remain unanswered. This study plans to initiate a multi-site, multi-disciplinary research collaboration, termed the Acute Respiratory Infection Consortium (ARIC) for the purpose of studying the etiology, epidemiology and immunology of influenza-like illness (ILI) in order to describe the natural history and risk factors for disease, as well as the characteristics of the host immune response. At the core of the ARIC is the proposed observational, longitudinal study of the Natural History Study of ILI among active duty military members, healthy retirees, and their dependents recruited from both inpatient and outpatient settings of military treatment facilities (MTF) in the continental US to be followed for a total of four (4) visits over a 28-day period. Additionally, the investigators also propose to conduct a household-based study of influenza (Family Transmission Study) in which individuals who have a laboratory-confirmed influenza illness will be recruited and enrolled along with their family members for the purpose of studying transmission of influenza within households. Taken together, these studies will establish a longitudinal cohort of ILI among active duty members and their families, as well as a repository of biological specimens relevant to the epidemiology and immunology of infection. Ultimately, these studies will serve as a solid foundation on which future investigations of ARI epidemiology, treatment and prevention can be based.
This phase I single center open labeled study is planned to assess the safety and tolerability of bevacizumab for treating patients with bilateral Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP). Approximately 20 patients will receive bevacizumab directly injected into the vocal folds. Patients who enroll in the protocol will be injected with bevacizumab in one vocal fold that represents the more diseased of the two folds. A sham injection with saline will be administered to the other vocal fold as the control. This therapy will be administered once every 6 ± 1 week for 6 months, with the same vocal fold selected for the initial treatment always getting the drug injection. The investigator will also treat lesions by laser photoangiolysis of both vocal folds using the 532 nm potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser.
The purpose of this study is to assess if a single dose of Diclofenac potassium (0.5 mg/kg) is more or as effective as a single dose of Acetaminophen (10 mg/kg) in the reduction of fever during 2 hours, in the treatment of febrile children with acute upper respiratory infections. This is a comparative double blind, double dummy, randomized study on the effectiveness of Diclofenac potassium versus Acetaminophen in febrile children with acute upper respiratory tract infections. The patient will be randomized to either group: Group A (Diclofenac potassium (0.5 mg/kg) or Group B (Acetaminophen (10 mg/kg)). A Health Care Professional trained will measure the temperature during 2 hours. During the study period, parents or legal representatives will be invited to fill a survey about the habits and knowledge regarding fever management at home.
