Filter by:Background: Respiratory endoscopy comprises flexible bronchoscopy and medical thoracoscopy. The diagnostic yield, technical factors and complications for all patient sub-populations is still not clearly defined. This may result in inappropriate or even dangerous application of such procedures. The aim of the study is to collect data on these aspects of respiratory endoscopy and identify important trends, as well as, areas for improvement. This data will also provide baseline comparative data for new bronchoscopic techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound and navigational bronchoscopy. Method: Prospective data collection. Technical details regarding these procedures are currently keyed into the OTM system by the endoscopy operators for documentation and billing. The department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine gets monthly downloads of all the fields from the OTM system for audit purposes.(See data collection form) The research project proposes to make the data non identifiable by removing the patient's name and IC number. Additionally the yield of the procedure will be checked by a chart review of the histology and microbiology results. There are no restrictions on patient recruitment because all procedures will be performed for clinical indications only and no patient will be recruited for the sole purpose of the study. Waiver of consent has been approved by the IRB.
The general hypothesis is that delayed antibiotic treatment strategies present similar effectiveness, when compared with non-prescription of antibiotics or the prescription of antibiotics, in the non-complicated acute respiratory tract infections.
Antimicrobial resistance has become a world-wide problem and antibiotic consumption is a major driving force for the development of resistance. Thus optimization of antibiotic prescription and reduction of unnecessary antimicrobial treatment are essential in the prevention and reduction of antimicrobial resistance rates. The goal of this study is the improvement of antibiotic prescription in outpatient care. The study will take place within a Swiss-wide sentinel surveillance network of physicians. The participating physicians will be randomised in a control and intervention group. The intervention group will receive therapeutic guidelines for the treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and lower urinary tract infection as well as regular feed-backs on the prescription pattern of the sentinel physicians during the past months. Sentinel physicians will collect information about each antibiotic prescription, its indication and characteristics of the patient. Our hypothesis is that the prescription pattern in the intervention group will be optimised and unnecessary antibiotic therapy will be reduced compared to the control group.
GSK is conducting a global retrospective chart review of patients treated with zanamivir as part of the Compassionate Use Program (CUP), in an effort to collect as much information as possible on the use of this investigational drug. The retrospective chart review is intended to gain a better understanding of the safety profile of investigational zanamivir and of clinical outcomes in the large number of patients treated outside of a clinical trial setting.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits of giving filled prescription of a medication to be used upon early onset of symptoms of URTI induced asthma. The hope is to reduce the need to present to Health Care centres for treatment.
This multicentric, randomized, double-blind and controlled study aims to examine the effect of a fermented dairy product containing the probiotic Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 (Actimel® = tested product) on the incidence of respiratory and gastro-intestinal common infectious diseases (cumulated number of infections during the intervention period: primary criteria), and on the Quality of Life in adults submitted to multi-stressor situation. Volunteers received either 200g/day of tested product (N=121) or control product (N=118) for 7-weeks.
In this study, the investigator will be approaching pregnant women to undertake 2 years of weekly respiratory and nappy specimen collection from their healthy new born infant. These specimens will be mailed to the Queensland Paediatric Infectious Diseases (Qpid) Laboratory where they will be stored and batched tested for viruses and bacteria. As well as this, parents will keep a simple daily symptom diary for their child, allowing us to match detection of viruses and bacteria to periods when the study child did or did not have symptoms. This will help our understanding of what finding these viruses and bacteria in specimens from children really means.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of Haemophilus influenzae and other bacteria in causing chronic cough, through a direct comparison of chronic cough cases and healthy controls recruited from paediatric respiratory clinics in the United Kingdom.
The purpose of the study is to assess the number of severe, laboratory-confirmed influenza in children hospitalized to paediatric intensive care units. Furthermore, the proportion of these children from all children hospitalized to paediatric intensive care units with acute respiratory infections will be established.
This study will compare the efficacy and safety of a single dose of a lidocaine 8 mg + cetylpyridimium chloride (CPC) 2 mg lozenge with a single dose of a lidocaine 1 mg + CPC 2 mg lozenge in the treatment of sore throat due to a common cold.
