Impact of Screening Patients With HIV for Kidney Disease

The Infectious Disease Society of America has recently recommended that patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) be screened for kidney disease on a regular basis. Screening involves non-invasive urine and blood test and a screening program has already been initiated here in the University of Mississippi HIV clinic. This study looks at the effect of this new screening program. Our Hypothesis is that screening for kidney disease is a cost effective and important addition to the care of patients with HIV.

Surveillance Study to Estimate the Incidence of Pure Red Blood Cell Aplasia Among Patients With Chronic Kidney Failure

The purpose of this study is to estimate the incidence rate of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA; aplastic anemia) mediated by erythropoietin (EPO) antibodies in patients who are receiving subcutaneous (s.c.) epoetin alfa (polysorbate 80 formulation) for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic renal failure (CRF), and to compare this incidence rate to the incidence rate with s.c. exposure to other currently marketed recombinant erythropoietin products (epoetin alfa, epoetin beta, darbepoetin alfa), with adjustment of duration for which the drug is given to the patient. The study will also examine the impact of the pattern of using mixed s.c. exposure to multiple erythropoietin products occurring in this patients, and the impact of the time from which the treatment is started to the onset of PRCA.

Prevention Of Nephrotoxicity Following Bone Marrow Transplantation Using Urodilatin and Mannitol

The purpose of the study is to combine Urodilatin (ANP analogue), which will increase glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and mannitol, which will increase the rate of urinary flow and solute excretion. We intend to treat twenty consecutive allogeneic bone marrow transplant patients in a phase II study comparing results with historical controls. We hypothesize that the incidence of renal dysfunction, ARF and thus mortality in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation can be significantly reduced by the use of protective agents Urodilatin and mannitol. We feel that this combination is best administered prior to and during the first two weeks of treatment when patients encounter immunosuppressive agents and the onset of early transplantation complications.

Although ionizing radiations have been proposed for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia in coronary and peripheral arteries, information is lacking on how irradiation may prevent neointimal smooth-muscle cell proliferation and restenosis on prosthetic haemodialysis vascular access. We will assess the preventive effect of one dose of radiations (14 Gy) administered transcutaneously one day after dilatation of stenosis on prosthetic haemodialysis vascular access in a randomized controlled trial with a standardized clinical and ultrasonographic one-year follow-up.
