Support for People Undergoing Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy adversely affects quality of life in cancer patients. Both stress management training and exercise training have been shown to improve quality of life. These two types of training have not been directly compared for chemotherapy patients. This study seeks to evaluate the separate and combined effects of stress management training and exercise training on quality of life during chemotherapy treatment. Participants receive either a home-based, self-administered program in 1 of 3 types (stress management, exercise, or stress management + exercise) or usual care (reading materials). It is hypothesized that the combined program (stress management + exercise) will be significantly associated with better quality of life than the usual care group, the exercise only group, and the stress management only group. All participants are assessed at 3 timepoints: before they begin chemotherapy, 6 weeks after their first chemotherapy infusion, and 12 weeks after their first infusion.

Study Synopsis Study Title: Double blind, single centre, cross-over study on the effects of weekly subcutaneous administration of 40 mg pegvisomant or placebo on quality of life and insulin sensitivity in acromegalic patients with normal serum IGF-I concentrations during long-term treatment with long-acting somatostatin analogs Study Objectives: 1. To determine whether the addition of weekly pegvisomant administrations improves quality of life 2. To determine whether the addition of weekly pegvisomant administrations improves insulin sensitivity Study Population: Acromegalic patients, who have normalized their serum IGF-I levels down to the upper 25 centiles of normality during long-term treatment with monthly injections of a long-acting somatostatin analogue Number of Subjects: 20 Procedures: - Patients on treatment with Sandostatin LAR (SL) 20 - 30 mg per months i.m. or patients on treatment with Lanreotide autosolution (LA) 90 - 120 mg deep s.c. will be enrolled. - For 4 months, all subjects will also receive weekly s.c. injections of either placebo or a fixed dose of 40 mg pegvisomant - After a 4 weeks wash-out period, patients will switch from either placebo to pegvisomant or from pegvisomant to placebo - Before, and after 2 and 4 months of each treatment period, serum efficacy parameters and quality of life (AcroQol ™/ PASQ™) will be assessed. - Before and after 4 months of each treatment period, pituitary tumor size and insulin sensitivity (HOMA/SIGMA model) will be assessed. We will also look at how these women are being followed for ovarian cancer. We hope this study will help us better understand how women surviving ovarian cancer are doing.

Clinical and Quality of Life Outcomes After Open or Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy

The goal of the study is to look at surgical recovery and quality of life for men who have an open versus robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RP). RP is a procedure that removes the prostate gland. We want to see how long it will take you to return to health and strength after surgery. Quality-of-life (QOL) means how you feel about your life and your treatment of prostate cancer. The QOL surveys ask questions about your sexual, urinary and bowel functions. We will also ask questions about your use of health care services, out-of-pocket-spending on medical care and about your return to work, in order to learn about the financial impact of prostate cancer treatment. We hope that the surveys will help show how prostate cancer treatments affect your daily life after surgery.

Application of ATP Infusions in Palliative Home Care

Palliative care in cancer aims at alleviating the suffering of patients. A previous study in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer showed that adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) infusions had a favourable effect on fatigue, appetite, body weight, muscle strength, functional status, quality of life, and survival. Based on these promising results, the present study was designed 1. To evaluate whether the beneficial effects of ATP administration observed in patients with advanced lung cancer would also be present in pre-terminal cancer patients of different tumour types, and 2. To test the feasibility of application of ATP infusions in a home care setting.
