Filter by:Malnutrition is a common medical problem in oncology patients. It is well known that the presence of malnutrition negatively affects patients' evolution and their quality of life, increasing the incidence of infection, hospital stay, and mortality. The new knowledge of cancer biology has made it possible to know the mechanisms of cancer progression. New treatments have been developed thanks to this knowledge including molecular target treatments aimed at these cancer mechanics and to reverse the antitumor capacity of the immune system. However, these treatments have different toxicities than classic and anachronistic treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, including alterations in glucose metabolism, endocrinopathies, rhabdomyolysis, etc. that can alter both the patient's nutritional status and quality of life. Additionally, a deficient nutritional status can have an impact on the intestinal microbiota, compromising the efficacy of the new antitumor treatments. The principal objective of this study is to characterize the nutritional status of the cancer outpatient receiving immunotherapy through a screening performed in Hospital consultations in Spain. Secondary Endpoints are (a). To describe the percentage of patients that receive nutritional counseling or nutritional support (enteral and/or parenteral nutrition) among those diagnosed as malnourished or at risk. And (b) to categorize the percentage and descriptive characteristics of cancer patients with mild, moderate, or severe malnutrition that goes to a hospital consultation in Spain and describe the percentage and descriptive characteristics of patients with malnutrition according to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.
Natural thyroid function changes during pregnancy. In up to tens of percent of pregnant women, these changes can lead to pathological fluctuations in hormone and antibody production. Although the effects on pregnancy and child development are well described, none has determined their influence on mother's emotional well-being and the quality of life. At present, universal thyroid screening in pregnancy in the Czech Republic is not covered by health insurance. The aim of the project is to change this situation by providing quality of life estimate for the cost-effectiveness model. This is a project of three specialized institutions aimed at mapping various aspects of the quality of life of pregnant women and describing the impact of thyroid disease on their lives. The project is a parallel study to a larger project Early screening for thyreopathy in pregnancy (CZ.03.2.63/0.0/0.0/15_039/0009643) supported by the European Fund Operational Programme Employment through the National screening centre. The data will be collected through online questionnaire from women enrolled in the Early screening for thyreopathy in pregnancy (CZ.03.2.63/0.0/0.0/15_039/0009643) who were screened for TSH, TPOAb and FT4.
The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of virtual reality (VR) on the different parameters, happiness, quality of life and functional fitness, among older population. The study aims to conduct a randomized controlled trial, where the participants in intervention group will use VR and those in control group do not use VR.
300 women will be evaluated in this study. Their quality of life, level of physical activity, Social Functioning, levels of depression and musculoskeletal status will be assessed.
This is an open label, cross-over group, single-centre randomised controlled trial comparing Medium Cut Off Dialyser with High Flux Dialyser in patients with end-stage renal disease on chronic haemodialysis.
This pilot study is focused on estimating the impact of a tele-sleep intervention on patient-centered outcomes relevant to former football players, including a) sleep duration, quality, and daytime impairment; b) pain, pain catastrophizing, physical and emotional functioning; c) mood; d) quality of life, with the longer-term goal to evaluate the impact on cardiovascular health risk. The evidence-based 'Brief Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia' (BBTI) will be utilized and tailored it to meet the needs of former football players. This pilot work will serve as the foundation for a larger, future clinical trial that utilizes a durable approach for improving sleep health with potential influence pain and quality of life as well as future studies to evaluate the implementation and scalability of BBTI in novel populations.
Background: Oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) is a condition with an increased risk of oral cancer. Due to the current changes in the factors associated with these diseases (because of human papillomavirus), it is expected that those who have no history of smoking or alcohol, young (<50 years old), and white male would be commonly affected. Those individuals require a higher need for information, preferred a more active role in decision-making, and have a longer lifespan than older individuals. There remain no detailed studies of whether the informational needs delivered to patients with OED met their needs or indeed what information such patient may wish. A few tools are available to evaluate the IN of patients with head and neck disorders. However, the items of these instruments were dedicated to a particular disease (e.g. cancer) and hence are not applicable to be used for OED. Project aims: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Oral Epithelial Dysplasia Informational Needs Questionnaire (ODIN-Q), developed and revised in the preliminary work for the proposed study, in a cohort of patients with OED. Timescale: 19 months. Clinical significance: This questionnaire can be useful in clinical practice. It could help to meet the patient's information needs and plan educational interventions for those showing unmet needs.
Therapy for end-stage achalasia is under debate: comparative data on the long-term functional results of myotomy and oesophagectomy are lacking. The study aimed to compare the objective outcomes and quality of life after oesophageal myotomy and oesophagectomy. The study included 31 patients (57 years) who underwent the Heller-Dor procedure with verticalisation of the distal oesophagus (pull-down technique dedicated to sigmoid oesophagus treatment) and 29 patients (recurrence free, 64 years) (p=0.539) who underwent oesophagectomy for end-stage achalasia or for cancer, extracted from a database designed for prospective clinical research. The objective outcomes of treatment were evaluated with semi-quantitative scales investigating dysphagia, reflux symptoms and endoscopic oesophagitis. Quality of life was assessed with the SF-36 questionnaire.
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of aromatherapy massage on the pain severity and quality of life in patients diagnosed with migraine in addition to medical treatment during an acute migraine attack. In addition to medical treatments, complementary and supportive therapies are commonly used to cope with pain during a migraine attack. In recent years, aromatherapy through massage has become more common to reduce the severity of pain, make the patient painless and improve the quality of life. Aromatherapy applications are the application of pain relief oil mixtures through massage. Lavender and peppermint essential oils are mostly used in aromatherapy applications to reduce pain. Therefore, a mixture of mint and lavender oil was used in the study.
Liver donation by a living donor is major surgery and has a profound effect on health-related quality of life and psychology. This study aims at evaluating those aspects of a donor for a period of five years after surgery.
