Multi-level Molecular Profiling of Stress Exposure Under Standardized Food Intake: A Clinical Study

Nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing various diseases, including cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. Moreover, it is gaining increasing attention in the context of preventing and treating psychiatric disorders. However, limited knowledge exists concerning the effects of food intake and stress on metabolism over time. To enhance the understanding of this subject, blood components in healthy volunteers will be examined during a standardized diet, focusing on the interaction between nutrition and stress. Physiological stress will be induced by subjecting participants to sleep deprivation for over 36 hours. Hormonal influences related to the female menstrual cycle are particularly taken into account in female participants. In conclusion, comprehending these processes can improve the understanding of nutritional physiology and contribute to advancements in clinical practice.

Heart Rate Variability, Physical Activity and Exhaustion in the Inpatient Treatment of Stress-Related Disorders

The goal of this observational study is to learn about heart rate variability and physical activity in inpatients with stress-related disorder. The main questions to answer are: - whether heart rate variability shows the severity of certain symptoms. - whether physical activity has an influence on heart rate variability and symptoms of stress-related disorder. Participants will be asked to take part in 5 examinations during their up to 8-week inpatient treatment: - Participate in an interview - Measurement of heart rate variability, blood pressure and health of the arteries (pulse wave velocity) - Tests of endurance, strength, balance and cognitive abilities - Completion of two additional short questionnaires - Wearing a 24-hour electrocardiogram - Wearing a fitness watch and daily self-assessment of fatigue, mood and tension via an app on participant's mobile phone during their stay.

Chess Training as add-on Intervention for Adolescents With Psychiatric and Psychosomatic Disorders

In the planned study, the effect of chess training on the cognitive abilities of children and adolescents with psychiatric and psychosomatic illnesses will be investigated in a naturalistic setting. Furthermore, the effects on therapy success and quality of life will be determined.Despite the thoroughly positive results, CRT has not yet been included in the official guidelines as an intervention in standard therapy; this is due, among other things, to too few studies and too little knowledge in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. The planned study aims to fill the research gap in the field of chess training as an adjunctive intervention in children and adolescents and to provide further evidence on the relevance of CRT in child and adolescent psychiatry. The hypotheses of the proposed study are: 1. chess training as a six-week add-on intervention will improve cognitive functioning in adolescents with psychiatric/psychosomatic disorders compared to standard treatment. 2. chess training as a six-week add-on intervention improves quality of life in adolescents with psychiatric/psychosomatic disorders compared to standard treatment. 3. chess training as a six-week add-on intervention positively influences the course of therapy in adolescents with psychiatric/psychosomatic illnesses compared to standard treatment.

Applied Social Neuroscience: the Building Resilience Among Women Project

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common and alarming form of violence against women, affecting up to 25% of all women in Catalonia. It is a complex phenomenon that involves aspects of social interaction, cognitive-emotional processes, neurobiological alterations and cultural context. Using an integrative methodology, IPV will be approached as a form of chronic exposure to severe stress that alters the stress-response system of exposed women, affecting their capacity to cope with future everyday situations. Fortunately, coping strategies can be subject to change through learning mechanisms and thus the identification of vulnerabilities can help build resilience strategies that may have a long-lasting impression on women's healthy functioning. It is proposed that the sustained exposure to violent social interactions impacts two key aspects of future behavior: i) altered psychosocial coping, and ii) enhanced emotional reactivity to acute stress. To test this hypothesis, the psychosocial and neurobiological response to common social acute stress will be analyzed among women with and without previous exposure to IPV. The Trier Social Stress Task (TSST) will be used, which is a valid test of acute stress that resembles the real life situation of a (mock) job interview. Based on a social neuroscience perspective, quantitative and qualitative measures will be used of cognitive performance, neuroendocrine activity and face-to-face interviews to obtain an integrative description of the response to the TSST that includes the personal narrative of the experience by women themselves. Finally, the proposal will benefit from the fact that all participants will share the same experimental condition (the TSST), and this mock job interview will be used as the common reference point for a workshop about the difficulties and strengths put to test during a stressful situation. The focus of this workshop will be on raising awareness of such coping limitations and abilities that participants themselves will be able to identify. The results of this workshop will inform guidelines and recommendations for future work and prevention strategies, and participants will be invited to be an active part in our dissemination strategy

The purpose of this observational multicenter-study is to investigate safety of psychopharmacological treatment and rates of adverse drug reactions in gerontopsychiatric inpatients. Elderly people are at higher risk for developing side effects under pharmacological treatment due to an altered metabolic situation, higher comorbidity rates and often polypharmacy. Furthermore gerontopsychiatric patients can often not articulate their symptoms clearly, for example due to pronounced cognitive impairment. The aim of the study is to gain valid data of possible adverse drug reaction rates, their potential risk factors and outcome, as well as medical prescription practises. To assess these outcomes an intensive pharmacovigilance-monitoring will be conducted at the five participating study sites. At Baseline demographic data, previous and present disorders, use of drugs, previous and present medication, quality of life, cognitive function, physical examination results, laboratory results and ECG will be assessed. Afterwards patients are visited weekly and screened for possible adverse drug reactions. All adverse drug reactions will be coded in the MedDRA-system. In case of a possible serious adverse drug reaction serum levels of all psychotropic substances applicated will be assessed. Drug combinations will be analysed using an established advanced bioinformatic tool (mediQ). Diagnosis, medication intake and possible adverse drug reactions are documented continually. 2 weeks after discharge from the ward, patients will be contacted by phone to assess catamnestic data.
