Filter by:The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and feasibility of a new less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) technique with a specific designed cannula for surfactant administration using Beractant replacement in preterm infants <32 weeks of gestation and compare short and long term outcomes with the intubation, administration of surfactant and extubation method (INSURE). This was a single-center, prospective, open-label, non-randomized, controlled study with an experimental cohort of 30 patients treated with LISA and a retrospective control group comprising the 30 most recently treated patients with INSURE. Beractant (4 ml/Kg) was administered as exogenous surfactant in both groups if patients on nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) during the first three days of life were needed of more than 30% of fraction of inspired oxygen inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2).
The purpose of this study is to estimate the clinical relevance of monitoring patients with acute ischemic stroke with 48 hours' inpatient cardiac telemetry in relation to evaluate the presence of brief runs of premature atrial complexes and new diagnosed atrial fibrillation. Furthermore to evaluate the prognostic significance of brief runs of premature atrial complexes in relation to develop atrial fibrillation, recurrent stroke/transient ischemic attack and death.
To establish if placental transfusion, using deferred cord clamping for 60 seconds or more while holding the baby at or below the level of the placenta, will improve survival without disability compared with standard early cord clamping in preterm babies less than 30 weeks of gestation.
The purpose of this study is to characterize the normal brain function of premature infants (23 to 31+6 weeks GA) during birth transition and through the first 72 hours of life.
Universal coverage of good quality facility based care globally could prevent nearly 113,000 maternal deaths, 531,000 stillbirths and 1.3 million neonatal deaths annually by 2020. Yet, only 57% of pregnant Ugandan women choose to deliver at health facilities. This unacceptably low coverage of facility based births could explain, in part, the high maternal and perinatal mortality estimates in Uganda. While multiple studies have examined factors associated with this low utilization of health services around the time of birth, there is inadequate implementation research exploring the best systematic methods that could promote uptake and scale up of facility based births. This study will therefore examine the effect of an intervention package (peer counselling by pregnancy buddies on facility based births, mobile phone messaging promoting facility based births and provision of mama-kits) on the frequency of facility based births and perinatal mortality. The study, a cluster randomized community based intervention trial in post-conflict Northern Uganda, will provide data crucial in framing national policy regarding measures to promote the use of health facilities.
The aim of this study is to investigate the possible use of calcium channel as a neuroprotectant in cases with PTL. This will be done by comparing the effect they have on cerebral blood vessels with the already established MgSo4. They have been proven superior to magnesium sulphate in tocolysis, and they possess the mechanism of action that would allow for their theoretical use as neuroprotective agents.
The purpose of this study is to determine if different forms of child-friendly, computer-based puzzles and games ("brain training") targeting executive function (EF) skills (i.e., thinking, problem-solving) result in improvements in EF in preschool children at risk for EF problems due to premature birth. The investigators hypothesize that children receiving active "brain training" will show greater improvements in EF and related skills immediately after treatment than children receiving passive "brain training." The investigators are also interested in whether any improvements in EF and related skills occur or are maintained at 3 and 6 months after completion of brain training.
One of the important complications of pregnancy is preterm labor (PTL) and delivery. There are different tocolytic agents to enhance the time of delivery. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of transdermal nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate, GTN) and oral nifedipine for managing preterm labor. This was a randomized clinical trial in women admitted with diagnosis of PTL. Group one have received transdermal GTN whereas group two have received oral nifedipine, vital signs, FHR, contractions, dilation and effacement as well as gestation age at the time of delivery have been monitored and evaluated in both groups of patient. Our main goal has been delay of delivery to have the most beneficial effect of primary corticosteroid administration for fetus.
