Osteoarthritis is the most common articular disease affecting the joint in a comprehensive and progressive manner. It is a chronic pathology correlated with age since nearly one in two adults is affected by osteoarthritis. The care of osteoarthritis is based on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. The latest recommendations support the non-pharmacological part including regular physical activity, therapeutic education and weight loss. Today tools are lacking for the patient and the practitioner to ensure long-term motivation and support. Connected objects, as future-oriented tools, are a customizable way to meet the expectations of both patients and professionals. The main objective of this study is to analyze the expectations regarding the use of a smartphone application for monitoring and support in the practice of exercises and regular physical activity in patients osteoarthritic. The secondary objective is to collect information on the use of connected objects dedicated to the management of osteoarthritis by patients and health professionals.

Duloxetine Combined With Intra-articular Injection of Corticosteroid and Hyaluronic Acid Reduces Pain in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis Patients

Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid is a common treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee. As a treatment drug for patients with depression, duloxetine has been shown in many studies to effectively relieve the pain of osteoarthritis and improve the function of the knee joint. However, there is no evidence regarding the efficacy of Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid combined with duloxetine for pain management in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid plus hyaluronic acid combined with duloxetine could achieve superior pain management effects to Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid plus hyaluronic acid alone in patients undergoing knee osteoarthritis pain.

In vivo knee kinematics will be assessed for 20 subjects that have been implanted with a Total Joint Orthopedics Klassic knee system by Dr. Aaron Hofmann of the Hofmann Arthritis Institute's Center for Precision Joint Replacement. This is the location from which all participants will be recruited and where fluoroscopy data collection will occur. Participants will undergo fluoroscopic surveillance of their implanted knee using a C-arm fluoroscopic unit while performing a deep knee bend activity at least six months post-operatively.

In vivo knee kinematics will be assessed for 20 subjects that have been clinically diagnosed with substantial unicompartmental osteoarthritis (OA) by one of the surgeons of Colorado Joint Replacement; this is the location from which participants will be recruited. The objective of this study will be to analyze subjects with symptomatic unicompartmental osteoarthritis under in vivo dynamic, weight-bearing conditions using video fluoroscopy to determine if present-day OA knee braces provide separation of the femoral condyle from the tibial plateau, thus avoiding excessive loads on the degenerative compartment.

Portuguese Fit & Strong! for Older Adults With Osteoarthritis

Fit & Strong! (F&S!) is a non-pharmacological intervention designed for older people with osteoarthritis with proven efficacy. This program was developed and implemented among American patients. It is composed by two components: physical exercise with health education. In total, the program last eight weeks, and meets three times per week (24 sessions), for 90 minutes per session. The nationals and internationals statistics showed that Portugal has a high prevalence of OA, in particular in the knee or hip. Considering this fact and the negative impact in OA patients' lives the F&S! program was culturally adapted for Portugal, which constitutes its first formal adaptation to an international population and setting. Therefore, a randomized controlled trial was developed to the effects of F&S! among Portuguese older adults with lower-extremity OA, particularly, with respect to physical performance (walking speed, balance, lower body strength), pain, stiffness, functionality, physical activity, anxiety, depression and fear of movement. Participants were identified and referred from the electronic medical record maintained by general practitioners in Health Care Centers. Participants were randomly allocated to the experimental or to the control and were assessed three times (baseline, posttest and 4-months follow-up). Data analysis included descriptive statistics (medians and interquartile ranges) to describe participants' characteristics. The comparison between the experimental and the control group at baseline was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test for continuous variables and the Fisher test for categorical variables. Within each group, changes over time (pretest, posttest, follow-up) were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Between group comparisons of differences in outcome variables between pretest, posttest and 4-month follow-up were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test.
