The Effectiveness of Behavioral Graded Activity in Patients With Osteoarthritis of the Hip and/or Knee

We performed a randomized controlled trial to study the effectiveness of Behavioral graded activity (BGA) in patients with OA of the hip or knee. It was hypothesised that in the long term BGA results in less pain, less limitations in activities, and better patient global assessment (i.e. the effect of treatment perceived by patients themselves), compared to usual care of physiotherapists (UC). UC was operationalized as physiotherapeutic care according to the Dutch physiotherapy guideline for patients with hip and/or knee OA. It was also investigated whether specific subgroups of patients benefited more from BGA and which factors influenced the success of BGA-treatment. Also, it will be investigated whether differences exist in exercise adherence and whether there is a relationship between exercise adherence and long-term effectiveness.

The Long-term Evaluation of Glucosamine Sulphate Study

The primary aim of this study is to determine if the dietary supplements, glucosamine sulphate and/or chondroitin can limit or reduce structural disease progression whilst providing symptomatic benefit in people with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The specific hypotheses to be tested in the proposed double blind, placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial are that, compared to participants allocated to placebo, participants allocated to either or both of these dietary supplements will demonstrate: - reduced medial tibio-femoral joint space narrowing at 2 years AND; - reduced knee pain over 1 year These benefits will be achieved by participants allocated to glucosamine sulphate and/or chondroitin (the study treatments) without concomitant: - increased use of analgesics - reduced health-related quality of life - reduced participation in leisure-time physical activity

Resistive Exercise for Arthritic Cartilage Health (REACH)

Female subjects over the age of 40 will be recruited and randomised into a progressive resistance training (PRT) or sham-exercise group. The PRT group will train at 80% of their peak strength, using Keiser pneumatic resistance machines, and progress approximately 3% per session. Strength will be re-assessed fortnightly. Exercises will target muscles around the hip and knee. The sham-exercise group will train on the same equipment as the PRT group except hip adduction, but without added resistance or progression. Both groups will train 3 days per week for roughly 45 minutes for 6 months. It is hypothesised that high intensity PRT will decelerate the tibial and femoral cartilage degeneration in the knee affected most by OA. Primary Outcome: Articular cartilage morphology following 6 months high intensity progressive resistance training Secondary Outcomes: Muscle and fat cross-sectional area (CSA) (pre and post) Muscle strength, power, endurance, and contraction velocity (pre, 3 months, & post) Medications (pre, 3 months, & post) Body composition (pre, 3 months, & post) Balance; Physical function (pre, 3 months, & post) Questionnaires (pre, 3 months, & post) - Habitual exercise (PASE) -WOMAC index (pain, stiffness and functional ability) - Depressive symptoms (Depression Scale) -Quality of life (SF36) - Confidence performing physical activity (Ewart) -Demographics

Treatment Outcomes for Ankle Arthritis

The purpose of this study is to determine any functional outcome differences in patients who have undergone surgical treatment for ankle osteoarthritis using surveys, step counts, and laboratory gait analysis. This study is closed to recruitment; follow-up procedures are completed; the study remains open for data analysis. Enrollment was completed by August 2012. As of July 2016, the study is currently analyzing data. In April 2017 the study was approved to begin long term follow-up with study participants. Study personnel contact participants via telephone and/or U.S. Mail to tell them about long term follow-up, and to ask whether they are willing to continue study participation. Long term follow-up will be for up to 12 years after the participant's ankle surgery.

Knee Bracing for People With Patellofemoral Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, sometimes called degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage in joints wears down over time. Symptoms can include pain, tenderness, stiffness, and inflammation. Studies have suggested that symptoms of knee osteoarthritis may be caused by abnormalities at the patellofemoral joint, which is the joint between the kneecap, called the patella, and the thigh bone, called the femur. This study will determine whether wearing a knee brace that realigns the patella over the femur is effective in relieving pain and improving function in adults with knee osteoarthritis.
