Filter by:Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease associated with aging. Although many patients take glucosamine supplements as a non-traditional treatment for osteoarthritis, the effectiveness of these supplements is questionable. This study will evaluate glucosamine therapy by directly analyzing two functions of joint fluid that are impaired by osteoarthritis - namely, the abilities to lubricate the joint and absorb shocks during activity. Joint fluid samples will be collected from subjects with knee osteoarthritis and analyzed on a device that simulates typical joint movements. After 3 months of glucosamine supplementation, samples will be collected again to detect potential improvements in joint fluid function.
This evaluation is being conducted on the relative new knee system, the Vanguard Cruciate Retaining (CR) to evaluate clinical efficacy of the Vanguard CR components.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long term effect of exercise therapy and patient education compared to patient education only in individuals with hip OA, and to evaluate predictive factors for changes in hip osteoarthritis both clinically and on x-ray. Main hypothesis H01: There are no significant long term ( 2 years) differences in hip function, quality of life, physical function and radiological changes between those individuals who went through a patient education program and a 12 week exercise therapy program compared to patient education program only. Material and Methods: 109 patients with radiographically verified hip OA are included in the randomized controlled trial; randomized to 12 week exercise therapy program and patient education (n=55) and patient education program only (n=54). Data will be collected 2 years after completed intervention period in the original RCT, and 6 months and 2 years postoperatively for those patients who have undergone total hip arthroplasty. The main outcome is: The Disease Specific WOMAC-Index. Secondary outcome measures are: Hip X-ray, SF-36v2 (quality of life),PASE (activity score), Self-efficacy for pain, isokinetic muscle strength tests, 6 minute walk test, Åstrand's bike test, range of motion. Status: This study is a prolongation of an on-going RCT (3a-2005-NAR). The inclusion, intervention and follow-ups including 1 year follow-up is completed. 2 year post-intervention follow-up will be completed in 2010, 2 year follow-up postoperative for patients undergoing total hip artroplasty will continue throughout 2011. A specific group of neurons in the brain produces hypocretin, a peptide which has been established as an important regulator of sleep and wakefulness. Activation of these neurons (increased hypocretin) stabilizes wakefulness; impairing or blocking these neurons (decreased hypocretin) promotes sleep. Evidence suggests that these neurons may be involved in the hypnotic properties of several anesthetics, and play a role in the induction and emergence from anesthesia. In humans there is a considerable inter-individual variability in hypocretin levels. This study aims to investigate how hypocretin levels affect the anesthetic care and recovery of patients undergoing elective hip surgery.
Abstract Kondrium, is a pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of kondrium in the treatment of OA of knee. A 3 month, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel-group study will be carried out. 117 patients with OA of the knee will be randomized to receive 1 intra-articular monthly injection of 5 mL of one of the following: 75 mg/mL of Kondrium, 82.5 mg/mL of Kondriumf or 8 mg/mL of methylprednisolone once a month during 3 months. The primary efficacy variable will be the change from baseline to final assessment in the Western Ontario and McMaster University OA index (WOMAC subscale score for pain), and Lequesne´s functional index.

The investigators will investigate the effect of glucosamine or ibuprofen combined with 12 weeks of muscle strength-training in patients with knee-osteoarthritis. The investigators would like to elucidate whether treatment with glucosamine or NSAID interact with the effects of exercise in osteoarthritis patients.
The aim of the study is to compare polyethylene wear in an uncemented total hip prosthesis with 3rd. generation highly cross-linked polyethylene with a 32 mm ceramic femoral head compared to a 36 mm ceramic head. Using X-ray, RSA and DEXA. The polyethylene to be used is E-Poly (Biomet). The H0 hypothesis is that there is no difference with regard to polyethylene wear and bone loss between the two groups.
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of a regular course of treatment with Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections on gait in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. Three consecutive HA injections will be compared to three consecutive placebo injections to determine whether HA's analgesic effect is greater than that of a placebo injection, and to observe whether HA's viscoelastic properties are manifested in a human knee OA population. We hypothesize that HA injections will relieve pain to a greater extent than placebo injections in knee OA patients, and will afford them with improved walking characteristics, such as increased walking speed, and step length.
