Filter by:This study evaluates two interventions intended to increase the safe disposal of leftover prescription opioids, compared to no intervention. Participants will receive an informational sheet describing how to safely dispose of leftover prescription opioids, an informational sheet with a drug disposal kit, or no intervention. Participants will be randomized by day for pragmatic reasons.
The long-term goal of this project is to promote responsible opioid prescribing, immediately improving patient safety and ultimately decreasing healthcare costs by reducing older adult morbidity and mortality due to opioid-related injury. The objective of this pilot project is to gather data to inform the development of the STOP Injury tool and evaluate additional predictive factors and important outcomes relevant to prescription opioids.
It is estimated that 77% of all Americans own a smartphone and the use of health apps has doubled in the last two years. Consistent with this development, over half of US smartphone owners have downloaded a health-related mobile app. While patient engagement is an integral and well-established component of in-hospital Early Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs that drive improved perioperative outcomes, efforts to support such engagement are often limited to a patient's hospital stay. The objective of this aim is to empower patients to control their use of pain medications after surgery in a safe and effective fashion using a novel and innovative consumer health informatics app: UControlPain. This app will be leveraged to integrate three critical components of the study into one application: First, study recruitment and consent documentation. Second, application of the intervention engaging patients to take control of their pain management after discharge. Lastly, UControlPain will collect relevant patient outcomes including pain assessments, functional status, and quantification of opioid and non-opioid analgesic medication intake. Use of the app will reduce the amount of opioid medication required, while enhancing patient post-operative pain control by maximizing non-opioid therapy. Subjects will be able to employ flexible non-opioid therapy with acetaminophen and NSAIDs whenever possible and safe. The rationale is that testing of such a provider-prescribed consumer health informatics app (UControlPain) will lay the groundwork to scale this project towards more secure and efficient pain management practices after surgery on a systems level and beyond. Upon completion, the expectation is to have developed an effective consumer health informatics app to help patients better manage their post-surgical pain at home, reduce reliance on opioids, and improve opioid safety through enhanced storage and disposal behaviors.
This study seeks to test standard and behavioral economic-enhanced training strategies to bolster first-time Emergency Department-initiated buprenorphine-naloxone administration among Emergency Department providers.
OPIOID FREE VERSUS OPIOID BALANCED ANAESTHESIA IN MIDDLE EAR SURGERY AIM OF THE WORK Primary aim: To compare between opioid and opioid free anaesthesia on post-operative nausea and vomiting in middle ear surgery Secondary aim: Monitoring analgesia, post-operative satisfaction and drowsiness.
The investigators aim to better understand opioid use in patients undergoing elective shoulder surgery. The investigators will prospectively determine actual postoperative opioid use, while evaluating whether implementation of an educational session with pain contract would help minimize opioid use.
We would like to evaluate and optimize opioid prescribing after minimally invasive hysterectomy. Currently, our standard prescribing is 150 oral morphine equivalents. However, recent studies show that half of the opioids prescribed are not used. We would like to include the patient in the decision making of the opioid prescribing. We have designed a randomized controlled trial to prescribe standard (150 oral morphine equivalents) or patient directed (less than or equal to 150 oral morphine equivalents) for pain control. We hypothesize that with patient input, there will be a higher utilization of the opioids prescribed. Also, we anticipate a lower number of opioids used overall. This study will help us optimize opioid prescribe and evaluate whether patient input can help in this important measure.
This study demonstrates the feasibility, acceptability of SKY program as an adjuvant therapy for American population suffering with OUD through a pilot program in Columbus, Ohio. The aim of this study is to evaluate the SKY program as an adjuvant therapy to treat opioid addiction.
Given the ongoing national opioid epidemic, an increased interest has developed in optimizing opioid prescribing practices of physicians, including otolaryngologists. Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is one of the most commonly performed surgeries by otolaryngologists with over 250,000 ESS's performed annually in the U.S. Multiple studies have shown that, compared to the amount patients actually consume, otolaryngologists prescribe a high quantity of opioids to patients recovering from ESS). It has been shown that these excess opioid medications contribute to prolonged use or abuse by the patient, family members, or friends. The purpose of this study is to better understand the pain management requirements of patients who undergo ESS for recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS) or chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This prospective, randomized, multi-institutional controlled trial will aim to determine the degree to which pain following ESS can be adequately controlled by non-opioid medications. It will also determine whether post-ESS narcotic use can be avoided entirely, or at least significantly limited. Patients will be randomized into two groups, each of which will receive a stepwise analgesic regimen consisting of acetaminophen and oxycodone or acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Pain will be assessed daily using visual analog scales (VAS) and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). The results of this study will help to develop a standardized approach to pain management in the post-ESS setting and help to elucidate the role of non-opioid pain medications. The ultimate goal would be to positively affect opioid prescribing patterns among surgeons who perform ESS in order to significantly reduce the quantity of opioids prescribed to patients while continuing to adequately manage patients' pain.
Pain in cancer survivors is difficult to treat, and unrelieved pain can greatly reduce a person's quality of life. Opioids are often prescribed for pain management, yet they can have undesirable side effects and may put someone at risk for addiction or dependence. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of an interactive music therapy intervention on pain management and opioid use in cancer survivors.
