Filter by:Background: - Cancer of the cervix (bottom third of the uterus, or womb) can be prevented by regular Pap tests (also called Pap smears), which check for changes in the cells of the cervix. Because many women in the United States have regular Pap smears, cervical cancer is not common in this country. However, the disease is common among women in the Mississippi Delta because of poor participation in screening programs. - The major causes of cervical cancer are persistent human papillomaviruses (HPV) infection by cancer-associated HPV types and lack of screening. These viruses cause an infection that often goes away by itself, but if it does not go away, over a long time lead to cervical cancer. HPV causes cervical abnormalities, which are detected by Pap smears and then treated. Objectives: -To determine whether an at-home self-collection method for obtaining cells from the cervix can be a simple, safe and inexpensive way to screen for cervical cancer for women who don t go to the health clinic regularly. Eligibility: - Women who reside in the counties of Leflore, Sunflower, Washington or Tallahatchie, Mississippi. - Women between 26 and 65 years of age who are not pregnant and who have not had a hysterectomy. Design: Screening study participants undergo the following: - The doctor takes a cervical sample using the same self-collection device that women will use at home to self-collect. - Pelvic examination and Pap test. For this test, the woman lies on an exam table and the doctor inserts an instrument called a speculum into the vagina, opening it to see the cervix. A special brush is used to take a few cells from the cervix. The cells are placed on a glass slide and sent to a lab for examination. - Cervical cell specimen collection using an at-home self-collection kit that participants will use at home after 2 weeks - At-home self-collection by participant after 2 weeks. - Referral to a doctor for follow-up care, if needed. - Colposcopy (see below) in all women with a Pap test that is abnormal or positive for HPV and for some women with a normal smear. Colposcopy study participants undergo the following: - The doctor takes a cervical sample using the same self-collection device that women will use at home to self-collect. - Colposcopy, an exam in which the doctor examines the cervix using a light and looks through a magnifying device to see if there is any abnormal tissue on the cervix. During this exam, the doctor may remove a small sample of tissue to diagnose any abnormality. Participants also have a sample collected using the self-collection kit. - At-home cervical sample collection by participant after 2 weeks. - Notification if further medical care is required and treatment if the biopsy looks abnormal.

The purpose of the study is to assess the overall survival and progression free survival of patients treated with Litx™ + chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone in the treatment of Colorectal Cancer with recurrent liver metastases, and to demonstrate the safety of Litx™ therapy. Litx™ consists of a light-activated drug, talaporfin sodium (LS11, Light Sciences Oncology, Bellevue, Washington), and a light generating device, composed of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), that is energized by a power controller and percutaneously placed in the target tumor tissue inside the body.
This phase II trial studies the side effects and best dose of bortezomib when given with chemotherapy and to see how well they work in treating participants with lymphoid malignancies undergoing stem cell transplant. Giving chemotherapy before a stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cells in the bone marrow, including normal blood-forming cells (stem cells) and cancer cells. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the participant they may help the participant's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can make an immune response against the body's normal cells called graft versus host disease. Giving tacrolimus and methotrexate after the transplant may stop this from happening. Giving bortezomib and chemotherapy may work better in treating participants with lymphoid malignancies undergoing a stem cell transplant.
Physical activity has been shown to have a positive effect on several quality of life outcomes in cancer patients, but few existing studies have focused on the end stages of cancer. The aim of this pilot study is to test the feasibility of a physical activity intervention in advanced cancer patients, from which data can be used to design a randomized controlled trial if results are encouraging.

There has been no successful treatment of diffuse peritoneal metastasis or carcinomatosis, in childhood tumors. Once this advanced stage of disease is evident, survival is measured in weeks. The selective lethal effect of supranormal temperatures on neoplastic cells and the additive or synergistic effect of combining chemotherapy has been well established in adult clinical trials using continuous hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion (CHPP) for advanced peritoneal adenocarcinoma of gastrointestinal origin, ovarian carcinoma and mesothelioma. This phase I study will evaluate the safety of continuous hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion with escalating doses of intraperitoneal cisplatin in the treatment of children with refractory tumors limited to the abdominal cavity. If tumors are outside the abdominal cavity, the tumors must be able to be controlled. Since CHPP has potential to improve outcome of children with peritoneal and retroperitoneal metastases, this study will evaluate the safety of elevated temperature (40oC) with intraperitoneal cisplatin chemotherapy. Primary Objectives: 1. To determine the MTD and dose-limiting toxicity of intraperitoneal cisplatin given in combination with CHPP as a 90 minute perfusion in children with advanced peritoneal and retroperitoneal solid tumors 2. To determine the safe and tolerable dose of CHPP with cisplatin to be used in Phase II trials 3. To determine the pharmacokinetics of intraperitoneal cisplatin platinum given with CHPP as a 90 minute abdominal perfusion (Optional)
This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of VEGF Trap when given together with docetaxel and to see how well they work in treating patients with persistent or recurrent ovarian epithelial cancer, primary peritoneal cancer, or fallopian tube cancer. VEGF Trap may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving VEGF Trap together with docetaxel may kill more tumor cells
