Association of 5-HT3 Receptor Gene Polymorphism With the Efficiency of Ondansetron for Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common and distressing complication in patients undergoing general anesthesia. However, although 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists have significantly reduced PONV, it is reported that over 35% of patients treated with ondansetron experience PONV. Though the cause of failure in ondansetron treatment is not clear, the investigators assumed that polymorphism in the 5-HT3 receptor gene would contribute to such inter-individual variation. In this study, the investigators examine whether the polymorphisms of 5-HT3 receptor gene affect the efficacy of ondansetron to prevent PONV in patients undergoing general anesthesia for laparoscopic surgery.

Acupuncture Treatment for Gastroparesis: a Pilot Study

Gastroparesis is a disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain. A common cause is diabetes but even more often it occurs in otherwise healthy individuals. The symptoms of gastroparesis can significantly alter a patient's quality of life. Current therapies are limited. In this study, the investigators seek to determine if twice weekly acupuncture treatments can improve symptoms of gastroparesis.

This is an efficacy and safety study to compare aprepitant with ondansetron for the prevention of nausea and vomiting in the first cycle of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC) in participants with solid tumors. MECs include a number of commonly used cancer chemotherapeutic drugs including: oxaliplatin-based, irinotecan-based, and carboplatin-based regimens. The primary hypothesis of this study is that the Aprepitant Regimen is superior to the Control (ondansetron) Regimen with respect to the percentage of participants with No Vomiting Overall (in the 120 hours following initiation of MEC) in participants with solid tumors.

A Comparison of Tumescence in Breast Reduction Surgery

Reletex for Nausea in GERD Patients

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a highly prevalent condition that is frequently encountered in the health care setting. It affects roughly 40% of Americans monthly and 10% weekly. Of those with GERD, there exists a cohort that experience nausea with or without vomiting that is unresponsive to PPI's and anti-emetics. For these patients, treatment options are limited and these symptoms may substantially alter their quality of life. New and novel therapies emerging include neuromodulation devices that may affect the central pathways leading to these symptoms. Of these, the Reletex band has been tested and proven efficacious in the treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy, chemotherapy, and surgery, in addition to standard anti-nausea medications. The investigators propose that through a similar mechanism, this device as an adjunct to PPI's and anti-emetics will reduce GERD-associated the nausea with or without vomiting, and by so doing, improve the quality of lives in this patient population.
