Live Feedback to Increase Adherence in Adolescents With Patellofemoral Pain

This study investigates if live feedback during home-based exercises will improve the ability to perform the exercises with the prescribed time under tension (TUT) per repetition compared with no feedback among adolescents with patellofemoral pain. The hypothesis is that adolescents who receive live feedback from BandCizer™ will have a mean TUT that is significantly closer to the prescribed TUT compared to the group not receiving feedback during the course of the intervention.

Preoperative Decolonization and Surgical Site Infections - a Prospective Randomized Trial

Surgical site infections are a major postoperative complication and are mostly due to colonization with endogenous germs, like Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis or Propionibacterium acnes. In literature, preoperative decolonization procedures showed a trend in lowering surgical site infection rates, but especially in orthopedic surgery data is controversial and randomized controlled trials are lacking. In the main study, the study investigators aim at performing a controlled prospective randomized interventional trial to measure the impact of preoperative decolonization of nasal Staphylococcus aureus carriers on surgical site infection rates in orthopedic surgery. In an alongside study a controlled prospective randomized interventional trial to measure the impact of preoperative skin decolonization of patients undergoing an orthopedic procedure will be conducted.

Preventive Program for Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders

Introduction: Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) are characterized by inflammation of muscles, tendons, fascia and nerves of upper limbs, shoulder girdle and neck. Its incidence is increasing and there is evidence of its association with the pace of work. As WMSDs, another major public health problem is back pain, which also negatively influence the quality of life of patients. These diseases affect many workers, among them, workers in the health area, including surgeons. Studies show that many surgeons are suffering from fatigue and musculoskeletal pain after undergoing surgery, especially laparoscopy. Regarding the quality of life of doctors, a study indicates that surgeons have commitment of domains "Vitality" and "Pain". For these reasons it is important to develop strategies for prevention of occupational risks (WMSDs) in this class of workers. Objectives: To evaluate the influence of a Preventive Program (educational and gymnastics) for prevention of WMSDs, in the quality of life, in limitation of the work, in intensity and frequency of musculoskeletal pain in surgeons of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. There will also be evaluated the effects of the program on muscular strength and flexibility of medics participating in the Preventive Program. Methodology: Randomized clinical trial with a sample of 54 surgeons, divided into two groups: A ("Intervention": will participate in eight meetings consisting of exercise and guidelines on care and prevention of WMSDs in activities of daily living, especially those relating work activities) and B ("Control": will receive a manual-brochure - containing information about general health). Participants will sign a Letter of Consent.

Effects of Nurse-led Patient Pathways

Objectives: This quasi-experimental pre-post-study investigated the effect of newly developed Nurse-led Patient Pathways (NPP) designed to improve patients`, and health care professionals` as well as institutional outcomes. Intervention: In the IG patients were cared for under the three newly developed NPP. NPP are characterized by four principles: evidence-based nursing, patient and family centered care, comprehensive discharge planning beyond hospital discharge and nurses' responsibility for patients` processes. The principles support and strengthen patient and family preferences as well as formalize nursing activities, and therefore contribute to process transparency in relation to other health care professionals. Outcomes: Primary Outcomes were defined as quality of nursing care (nursing care index, NCI), and patient satisfaction (patient satisfaction with nursing care quality, PSNCQ). Secondary outcomes were defined as 1) nursing work environment (nursing work index revised, NWI-R; and nursing workplace quality, NWQ), and 2) institutional-related costs (length of hospital stay, LOS; nursing time and nursing costs). Additionally, nurses` and other health care professionals` experiences of intervention translation will be explored.

Effects of Workplace Intervention in Occupational Rehabilitation on Return to Work

Aim is to study the effect of a work place intervention during a multicomponent return-to-work rehabilitation program on return-to-work. The intervention is compared with inpatient rehabilitation only, and participants will be recruited from the diagnostic groups dominating the sick-leave statistics, namely musculoskeletal disorders, common mental disorders (e.g. stress, depression and anxiety), and unspecific disorders including chronic fatigue.
