Filter by:Virtual surgical planning (VSP), the simulation of bone corrections in virtual reality ("Computer Aided Surgical Simulation": CASS) and 3D printing of customized implants and devices are achieving an increasingly central role in clinical practice and orthopaedic surgery. Those technologies and processes allow an allow incredibly versatile and accurate planning and reproduction of complex bone correction or joint replacement procedures. Recent and converging evidence document how the use of these technologies is able to significantly reduce surgical times, bleeding and intra-operative complications, and the use of intra-operative fluoroscopy. Due to the collaboration between the ward of Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute and the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIN) of the University of Bologna it was possible to experiment, validate and introduce simulation, planning and personalization technologies of interventions of corrective surgery of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) of the limbs in childhood and developmental age into clinical practice. Currently, extremely complex bone correction interventions are often planned and performed through Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing of models and custom sterilizable cutting guides (Patient-Specific Instrument, PSI). In pediatric orthopedic surgery is often necessary to use homologous massive bone grafts customized on the patient's anatomy, which can be employed in the replacement of neoplastic lesions, in the axial correction of deformities or even in the extemporaneous lengthening of bone segments. The Musculoskeletal Tissue Bank (BTM) regularly provides bone grafts processed in a Class A controlled contamination environment according to GMP (Clean Room), guaranteeing quality and microbiological safety. The current realization standard of bone grafts on specific request is a freehand realization. The BTM technicians model the grafts, based on the indications received (length, width, height, indications on geometry), using standard surgical instruments (osteotomes, oscillating saws, etc.). The present clinical trial aims to validate the feasibility, accuracy and effectiveness of an innovative process for producing customized bone allografts to correct bone deformities in children. the customization process will be conducted by using computer-aided surgical simulation and 3D printing.
Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, locally destructive growing bone tumors, which were first described in 1942 by Jaffé and Lichtenstein (1). They are most often diagnosed in childhood and early adulthood. The literature reports that ABCs comprise 1-6% of all primary benign bone tumors (2). Most cases of ABCs (75-90%) are reported for patients younger than 20 years, with a slightly higher incidence for females (3). Most common localizations are the pelvis, the metaphysis of long bones and the spine, but ABCs can also affect any other localization(2). ABCs that are associated with a preexisting osseous lesion are defined as secondary ABCs. They represent approximately 30% of all ABCs (2). Secondary ABCs can occur, e.g., in cases of a giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma or telangiectatic osteosarcoma
The goal of this study is to investigate if a Wrist Stabilizing Exercise Programme, WSE, compared to Conventional Intervention use of orthosis in daily activities, HO in persons with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders, HSD or hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, hEDS, in order to reduce pain and or paraesthesia in the hand. Participants are persons with HSD and hEDS with symptoms of persistent or intermittent pain and or paraesthesia in the hands for the past three years. The main question aims to answer - if the WSE has effect on occupational performance and health related quality of life - if the WSE has effect on handfunction and handstrength The intervention WSE aimed to improve wrist stabilization and increased grip strength according to a training program. Researchers will compare WSE and HO to see if there were changes between and within the intervention group, WSE and Convention group.

To ensure early mobilization, minimize suffering, and to prevent postoperative complications postoperative pain, should be reduced as soon and as effectively as possible. A non-pharmacological post-operative intervention in terms of the application of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), could have the potential to accelerate early mobilization and reduce the use of opioids. The overall aim is to demonstrate that the addition of TENS to standard postoperative pain management of orthopedic patients can alleviate pain during mobilization and at rest
As part of a Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF project (On-site multi-component intervention to improve productivity and reduce the economic and personal burden of neck pain in Swiss Office-Workers, NEXpro = Neck EXercises for productivity, SNSF no. 32003B_182389, BASEC no. 2019-01678), the investigators first developed a physiotherapeutic exercise intervention to improve the strength and mobility of the neck muscles. In the SNSF project NEXpro, the intervention took place on-site in the office. However, in view of the digital transformation, it is important to adapt the intervention delivery method to the new virtual work setting. The aims of the present project are therefore to implement, further develop and contextually adapt the exercise intervention in order to reduce musculoskeletal complaints and to reduce health-related presenteeism. The final product is a user-friendly virtual 6-week short exercise intervention that employees of the University of Bern can use independently, regardless of time and place. The effectiveness of the newly developed short exercise intervention (pain reduction, reduction of presenteeism) will be assessed during a short pilot phase.
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery, which has been frequently applied in recent years, provides long-term positive clinical results and increases the quality of life after surgery, while it can cause severe pain in the early postoperative period. Postoperative pain management is very important in shoulder arthroplasty. Adequate pain control; mental state, nutrition, cost of care, rehabilitation, and patient satisfaction, are of great importance for the patients' recovery and contribute to a successful surgical outcome. In this study, the investigators aimed to compare the effects of suprascapular nerve block and shoulder pericapsular nerve block, which will be performed preoperatively with ultrasound, on the level of postoperative pain in patients who will undergo shoulder arthroscopy surgery under general anesthesia.
This study aimed to evaluate the prehospital assessment unit (PAU) by admission within 48 hours, 7 days, respectively and on survival. The PAU should increase focus on a patient-centered approach with the capability to make advanced assessments of patients to reduce unnecessary transportation. Further, this paramedic assessment program could positively impact the healthcare system by reducing admissions to emergency departments. The PAU is operated by paramedics who have additional education, and they are capable of testing and monitoring certain conditions at the scene - in the home of the patients. The paramedics decide if the patient requires admission to the hospital or if the patient could stay at home. They are consulting physicians on call by phone. This retrospective cohort study included data from patients assessed by the PAU between November 1st 2021, and October 1st 2022. Non-PAU patients were selected from the 1-1-2 calls (the European version of 9-1-1) EMS and were collected based on the same criteria as the patients assessed by the PAU. The control ratio was 1:10 for cases to increase power. The non-PAU patients were matched on sex and age (within 5-year ranges). Matching was performed using incidence density sampling, where controls were selected for each case on the week of 1-1-2 call.
Lower back pain has been one of the most frequently occurring musculoskeletal disorder among the females. This act as a global burden and is highly prevalent in our society. This pain can result in life long disability, loss of function and mobility among individuals. The female of the society suffers from lower back pain the most because of the under lying causes, prolong standing and stooping as well as because of hormonal changes in their bodies
Ultrasound guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block (BPB) has been extensively studied and recommended as a sole anesthetic for upper extremity surgeries. The efficacy of ultrasound-guided (USG) SeTB for surgical anesthesia of the entire upper extremity and cadaver anatomic study evaluating the spread of the injectate after a simulated SeTB is further confirmed from the results of our previous research. Although the results in our previous study are encouraging, there is a paucity of data on sensorimotor blockade and incidence of hemidiaphragmatic palsy after a SeTB, and no data comparing SeTB with a supraclavicular BPB techniques which this study aims to evaluate. We hypothesise that USG SeTB is superior to supraclavicular BPB in anesthetising the entire upper extremity from the shoulder to hand.
