Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine whether Restorative yoga versus stretching exercises will reduce risk factors for metabolic syndrome in adults with metabolic syndrome.
The purpose of the Taste Perception Study is to assess variations in the ability to taste and perceive sensations from various stimuli in younger (18-49 years) and older (50-85 years) volunteers. The study's goal is to determine how these sensations influence what one likes to eat, and what one chooses to eat, and whether there is an association with dietary intake, body composition and chronic disease. Another objective of the study is to determine the association between variations in oral sensations and genes mediating sensory perception and dietary behaviours.
The purpose of this study is to determine the variability in glycemic index determinations for individual foods and food combinations. The study will also evaluate the changes in insulin and free fatty acid levels, plasma lipid and lipoprotein profiles, C-reactive protein-a marker of inflammation and glycosylated hemoglobin- a marker of glucose metabolism during a five-hour period after eating the food or foods. Additionally, supplementary data on variation in oral sensation, habitual food intake, food preferences and genes mediating sensory perception and dietary behaviors (supported by a grant from the Tufts Ross Aging Initiative) will be related to the outcomes on the present study.
The specific aim of this study is to determine the effects of substituting brown for white rice on the treatment of metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Metabolic syndrome and thereby obesity is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation and it is likely that this is also the case in children (Ley et al., 2005). It has also been shown that the gut microbiota is different in obese individuals compared to normal weight individuals and that the microbiota seems to have a role in fat storage (Backhead et al, 2004). Intervention study with overweight and normal weight school age children. The children will be randomised to receive selected probiotics or a placebo. Fecal and blood samples will be collected, and anthropometric measurements (weight, height, skin folds) will be recorded before and after the intervention. The dynamic of the microbiota of the GI will be monitored by molecular methods. Markers of intestinal inflammation (calprotectin) and permeability will be analysed. Blood samples will be analysed to evaluate how the intervention influence the systemic polarization of the immune response by means of cytokine analyses. Furthermore, blood pressure, blood lipid profile and early markers of metabolic syndrome will be evaluated. Hypotheses This study will examine if overweight in children is associated with a different intestinal microbiota and if a change in microbiota caused by probiotics can modify inflammation and risk factors for the metabolic syndrome.
Abnormal coronary microvascular vasodilation has been demonstrated in patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, but the role of insulin resistance in its pathogenesis is not clear. The aim of this study is to invasively assess coronary microcirculation and to investigate the relationship of insulin resistance with coronary microvascular dysfunction. A pressure temperature-sensor-tipped coronary wire will be advanced in coronary arteries without significant lumen reduction. Thermodilution-derived coronary flow reserve (CFR) will be calculated as resting mean transit time (Tmn) divided by hyperemic Tmn (obtained with a 5-min i.v. infusion of adenosine 140 mg/kg/min). An index of microvascular resistance (IMR) will be calculated as the distal coronary pressure at maximal hyperemia divided by the inverse of the hyperemic Tmn. FFR will be calculated by the ratio of Pd/Pa at maximal hyperemia. Insulin resistance (IR) will be assess by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index and plasma IL-6 and TNF-alpha levels will be measured in addition to routine blood examinations before the procedure.
The objective of this study was to investigate from 3 sites (University of Connecticut, University of Florida, and University of California, Irvine) whether enhancement of a modified Mediterranean-style, low glycemic load diet (MED) with specific phytochemicals (soy protein, phytosterols, rho iso-alpha acids and proanthocyanidins; PED) could improve cardiometabolic risk factors in women with metabolic syndrome.
This study is a randomized, controlled and opened trial designed to compare the effects of an interdisciplinary moderate-intensity lifestyle modification program vs. conventional treatment by primary care physicians. We want to show the benefits of coherent interdisciplinary care in the obesity clinic of CHUS (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke) in comparison to the conventional treatment in order to: - Improve subjects' characteristic features of metabolic syndrome: weight, waist circumference, fatty mass, plasma lipid profile, blood pressure, fasting glycaemia, and HbA1c; - Improve our patients' nutritive practices; - Decrease our patients' sedentary lifestyle; - Improve our patients' motivation to lose weight, and to improve their quality of life; We also wish to define predictors of answer in order to better select the patients if necessary, and evaluate the costs incurred by the health system.
Life-style intervention with dietetic and exercise therapy is an important fundamental approach to patients with metabolic syndrome (MetSyd) which may cause endothelial dysfunction leading to cardiovascular events. We investigated whether the life-style modification by dietetic and exercise instruction could improve endothelial dysfunction assessed by a new non-invasive and automatic device; digital reactive hyperemia peripheral arterial tonometry (RH-PAT).
The traditional risk factors for obesity are inappropriate diet, lack of exercise and genetic factors. However, recent observations have involved gut microbiota profiles as having an additional influence. In this case, there exists the possibility to modulate this through diet. Research has shown that the gut microbiota of both obese humans and mouse models of obesity is altered towards less beneficial one compared to lean counterparts. This raises the possibility of modulating the gut microbiota as a novel strategy in tackling the epidemic of obesity and diabetes sweeping the developed world. In addition, a more direct effect of high-fat induced disruption of the intestinal microbiota has also been seen with a murine model. Elevated circulating levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) a major building block and antigen of Gram-negative bacteria, was shown to generate a low grade chronic inflammation, termed metabolic endotoxemia, which then onsets insulin resistance. High-fat diets were shown to disrupt the Gram-negative intestinal populations of these animals, liberating LPS. The effects of prebiotics on the microbiota or metabolic syndrome (combination of disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes) in overweight adults have not been investigated thus far. The investigators therefore propose to investigate the effect of galactooligosaccharide (GOS) on the faecal microbiota and metabolic syndrome risk factors in overweight adults in a double-blind, randomised, placebo controlled, cross-over trial.
