Filter by:B cube is a new generation cohort to study the determinants and natural history of brain aging, using molecular epidemiology, in a representative sample (N=2000) of the general population from the age of 55 (the approximate age of onset of the first cognitive disorders and a target population particularly receptive to prevention messages). Special interest will be given to nutrition, a promising environmental exposure for prevention.
The study design is an observational, longitudinal study with data collected online via a computer-assisted survey. Subjects will be recruited through non-probability snowball sampling. Objectives: 1. to document the prevalence of injuries and medical complications arising from kink activities 2. to document how healthcare is utilized by kink-involved people 3. to document the health outcomes particular to a large sample of kink-involved people 4. to test whether the centrality of kink identity and degree of community belongingness affect injuries, health outcomes, and healthcare utilization
In this pilot study, we aim to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and fidelity of Syrian refugee young adults as community mental health workers (Y-CMHW), and the impact of this work on outcomes of wellbeing, coping and stress. In addition, we aim to assess the mechanisms leading to any changes in these outcomes.
The purpose of this study is to test an intervention focused towards promoting mindfulness among VA physicians and nurses. Mindfulness is a tool that can help people focus. It helps clear the mind of distractions and biases. Some physicians and nurses will be randomized to receive the study intervention, while others will not. The study intervention will include the following: 1) education about mindfulness; 2) group discussions about mindfulness; and 3) an optional mobile app to promote mindfulness. Participants randomized to the intervention will be encouraged to use the act of cleansing their hands as a prompt for practicing mindfulness. The study will test if this intervention will increase physician and nurse mindfulness. It will also test if it leads to improved well-being and use of proper hand hygiene.
Recharge Rooms are immersive, biophilic private spaces designed to ameliorate trauma, anxiety, and stress. They feature multisensory input that is inspired by nature, as has previously been found to confer physiological benefits. These environments include silk imitation plants, projected scenes of soothing natural landscapes, low lighting that is tailored in color to match the landscapes that are being projected, high definition audio recordings of nature sounds paired with relaxing music, and infusion of essential oils and calming scents. The aim is to investigate the physiological and mental health outcomes that the short and long term exposure to these rooms have on healthcare workers. The data will be collected through online surveys. No identifiable information will be assessed or collected. The plan is to have 60 participants.
This randomized control trial aims to explore a data-driven, proactive approach to identifying patients at greatest risk during the pandemic, and assess the impact of an embedded System Navigator in a primary health care setting. The System Navigator works one-on-one with patients to identify and provide support to their biological, psychological and social needs (e.g. income, housing, food security). Investigators are doing this study to find out whether proactive identification of vulnerable patients and linking to a System Navigator leads to reduction in emotional distress associated with managing complex health conditions and unmet social needs during COVID-19, compared to usual care. Investigators will involve approximately 180 patients from primary care clinics that are a part of the University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network (UTOPIAN). The information from this study will be used to help us understand how proactive engagement within a primary health setting can help to improve the health of patients during COVID-19, and beyond.
The proposed study is designed to test and optimize the Messy Memories mobile application as an intervention. The Messy Memories mobile intervention is designed to target stress-related problems based on practices with proven effectiveness. By utilizing a mobile application intervention, this study aims to overcome barriers and provide access to evidence-informed intervention strategies that will likely improve mental health in frontline healthcare workers.
This pilot study will determine the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of Strengths-based Linkage to Alcohol Care (SLAC; a behavioral intervention) to link Veterans, identified as hazardous drinkers in VHA primary care, to alcohol care. Participants screening positive in VA primary care for hazardous drinking and posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and/or depression in the past year will be recruited. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two study conditions - SLAC plus usual care or usual care only. The investigators will determine the feasibility of conducting a larger scale study to evaluate SLAC in primary care and SLAC's acceptability among key stakeholders (e.g., Veterans, primary care providers). Other outcomes will include exploring whether SLAC improves linkage to an alcohol care or help option and/or reduces alcohol use and mental health (PTSD, depression) symptoms.
Background: Inequalities in COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and death in under-studied, under-represented, and under-reported groups of people are severe. A growing number of studies have assessed the impact of individual risk factors. But few studies have assessed which factors are the greatest drivers of COVID-19 disparities from a wider perspective. Objective: To understand the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on minority women and their families to assist in developing community-based programs to help in recovery. Eligibility: Healthy people aged 18 and older who reside in North Carolina. Design: Participants will take a 45-minute online survey. The survey will cover their demographics, community, health, lifestyle, household, and environment. Participants may choose to have tests. They may visit the Clinical Research Unit. They may also have a home visit for these tests. In some cases, they may mail samples to the study team in prepaid envelopes. Participants may take an optional 15 minute survey about their reproductive history. Participants may give a blood sample. Participants may give urine samples. They will be asked to give 4 samples on 2 consecutive days. They will fill out a log with each sample they collect. Participants may give saliva samples. Participants will give toenail samples from each toe. Participants will give dust samples. They will be given 8 alcohol swabs. Two will be for testing. They will be asked to swipe a total of 3 door frames. Each door frame should be in a different room of the house. Participants will be given silicone wristbands to wear for 1 week. This is to measure their exposure to air pollutants. Participants may be contacted in the future for follow-up. They may be contacted by phone, email, or letter.
This study is designed to test the effectiveness of a psychoeducation-based program to address communication and conflict resolution in families, thereby supporting mental health in children and their caregivers.
