Low Sexual Desire and Metabolic Syndrome

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in postmenopausal women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (MS) and to compare it to that of a control group without MS. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Two public tertiary hospitals in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Population: Two-hundred ninety-one postmenopausal women between 40 and 65 years of age. Methods: Sexual function was evaluated using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire and DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria and was related to the diagnosis of MS, which was determined according to the guidelines defined by the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III). Main outcome measures: Analysis of sexual function with emphasis on sexual desire (HSDD), the presence of MS and its components.

Hormone Replacement Therapy on the Postmenopausal Endometrium

Healthy postmenopausal women, amenorrheic for 1-10 years, aged 45-60 years and in use of follicle stimulating hormone > 30 mille-International unit/milliliters (mIU/mL), will participate in the study. All women will be informed by a physician of the risks and possible benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The continuous combined treatment with drospirenone 2 mg and 17β-estradiol 1 mg or tibolone 1.25 mg will be administered for a 24-week period. Transvaginal ultrasound was performed to evaluate the thickness of the endometrium at baseline. At study end-point, an endometrial biopsy will be performed with a Pipelle endometrial sampler to examine histological and immunohistochemical parameters. Immunohistochemical detection of Bcl-2 protein, estrogen and progesterone receptors will be performed in stroma and glandular epithelium.

Postprandial Lipidemia After a Meal With Different Types of Fat, Estrogen Treatment, Age and Gender in Healthy Subjects

The study examines the effect of hormone replacement in postmenopausal women compared to men, 55 years of age, and in the elderly without hormone replacement of both sexes. The lipid and glucose metabolism is evaluated during treatment and placebo with a meal with mashed potatoes and different types of fat. Glucose, insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, free fatty acids and coagulation parameters are measured. During menopause the women reduce their levels of estrogen and their risk of cardiovascular disease rises to the men's level. This effect on mortality and morbidity can probably be reduced by hormone therapy.

Raising Insulin Sensitivity in Post Menopause

The purpose of this study is to find out if a novel drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration [Duavee™, Pfizer, Inc] for treatment of postmenopausal symptoms (vaginal dryness and hot flashes) and prevention of osteoporosis also improves insulin sensitivity by decreasing body fat especially in your liver. DUAVEE™ (Conjugated Estrogens/Bazedoxifene) is a new prescription medicine that contains a mixture of estrogen (the main female hormone made by the ovaries) and bazedoxifene, which is FDA approved. For over 60 years, estrogens have been used as hormonal treatments to help manage hot flashes and help prevent postmenopausal bone loss. But in the treatment of postmenopausal women, the use of estrogens alone can increase the risk of developing cancer of the uterus. So estrogens have been traditionally paired with a progestin to decrease the risk of hyperplasia (the thickening of the lining of the uterus), which can be a precursor to cancer. DUAVEE™ uses bazedoxifene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), in place of a progestin to help protect the uterus against thickening of the uterus that may result from estrogens alone. In this study, you will get either DUAVEE™ or the placebo (a "dummy pill" that may look like medicine but contains no active medication) first and then switch to the other pill.
