Filter by:The purpose of the study is to identify prognostic markers and possible success rate of tolerance induction to peanut allergens in children allergic to peanut.
The primary objective is of the PreventADALL study is to test if primary prevention of allergic diseases is possible by simple and low cost strategies, and secondary to asses the impact of xenobiotic exposure and microbiota in and on the body and the environment on allergic disease development. The secondary objective is an exploratory focus to investigate early life risk factors for development of non-communicable diseases, including asthma and allergic diseases as well as for diseases that may share common risk factors, including cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Design: A multi-national population-based prospective birth cohort with a factorial designed randomized controlled intervention trial of two clinical interventions; skin care 0-9 months and early food introduction by 3-4 months, thereafter observation only. Recruitment in three cities (Oslo, Ostfold and Stockholm) of approximately 2500 mother-child pairs is done in two steps; first pregnant women are recruited and enrolled at the 18-weeks ultrasound investigation (n=approximately 2700) and thereafter their new-born babies are included. Randomization into four groups is done by the postal code or "township" to ensure all four intervention-groups within each "township". Visits for biological and environmental sampling, observations and investigations will be at the relevant pediatric departments (at 3-6-12-24-36 months of age) and through childhood into adulthood thereafter, provided sufficient funding.
"Troponin T (TnT) is a component of the contractile apparatus of the striated musculature. Although the function of TnT is the same in all striated muscles found in the heart to form a TNT (cardiac TnT) differing significantly TnT of the skeletal muscles. Because of its high tissue specificity, cardiac TnT is a specific marker and highly sensitive of myocardial injury. Asymptomatic elevations of troponins is frequently found in patients with chronic renal failure in stage V, which present no clinical signs of acute or electrical myocardial injury. Many studies have been conducted in recent years to explain the origin and clinical significance of this elevation, but the results are controversial: cardiac dysfunction, left ventricular hypertrophy or chronic inflammation. Besides the effect of the dialysis session was evaluated on this biological parameter in different studies which together do not find Impact hemodialysis session on the value of troponin Achieving dosages rate hypersensitive serum troponin T in a dialysis population, will: - to determine the evolution of TnT in time and what are the characteristics of the patients for whom this rate varies - to know what its evolution during the session, - to identify if possible the criteria that are responsible for the variation in the direction of increasing and / or its reduction - and to characterize patients whose base rate is higher than the 99 percentile in the absence of clinical symptoms which could lead to establish reference population for this specific normal values. The Purpose of this study is to evaluate the serum troponin T in a hypersensitive dialysis population and verify what is the influence of the hemodialysis session, the session parameters and intradialytic events on changes in serum troponin T hypersensitive after a hemodialysis session. The aim of this pilot study is to assess the ability of a new polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography system to obtain high-quality images of retinal birefringence.
Background There is limited evidence indicating that specific immunotherapy in elderly patients is safe and effective. This study was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of specific subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) against grass pollen allergens in patients over 60 years of age with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) and a confirmed allergy to grass pollen. Objective This study assessed the safety and efficacy of SCIT for grass pollen allergens in elderly patients with SAR. Methods This study included 62 60- to 75-year-old patients with SAR and grass pollen allergy confirmed using a skin prick test, nasal provocation, and serum IgE measurement. The patients were individually randomized to the active or placebo groups using a double-blinded method. There were 33 subjects in the SCIT group (Purethal, Grass pollen, HAL Allergy B.V, Leiden, Netherlands) and 29 subjects in the placebo group monitored for three years. The patients were required to record each use of anti-allergy medication in a diary and use a visual graphic scale. The main outcome measure was the area under the curve (AUC) for the combined symptom and medication score (SMS).
Impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is a marker of autonomous dysfunction, which may play an important role in the long-term development of hypertension. Perioperative patients with hypertension is rapidly growing in all populations worldwide. However, no study has reported the values of BRS in this cohort. The aim of this study was to estimate the value of BRS for hypertension in a surgery cohort.
Peanut allergy can be life-threatening. Current diagnostic techniques for peanut allergy have high sensitivity, but not high specificity. This clinical trial will test the validity of a novel blood biomarker (compared with current testing) as a diagnostic predictor of anaphylaxis to peanut.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) or 'wheat sensitivity' (NCWS) is included in the spectrum of gluten-related disorders. No data are available on the prevalence of oral lesions in NCWS. Our study aims to evaluate the prevalence of oral lesions in NCWS patients and search for correlations with other clinical characteristics. This prospective observation study will include 90 NCWS patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)- like symptoms, 90 IBS and 90 celiac controls. Patients will be recruited at the Internal Medicine and at the Gastroenterology Units of the University of Palermo. Elimination diet and double-blind placebo controlled (DBPC) wheat challenge proved the NCWS diagnosis. All subjects underwent oral examination to assess the presence or not of oral soft and hard tissue lesions potentially associated to NCWS and CD.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) or 'wheat sensitivity' (NCWS) is included in the spectrum of gluten-related disorders. No data are available on the prevalence of low bone mass density (BMD) in NCWS. Our study aims to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition in NCWS patients and search for correlations with other clinical characteristics. This prospective observation study will include 90 NCWS patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms, 90 IBS and 90 celiac controls. Patients will be recruited at the Internal Medicine and at the Gastroenterology Units of the University of Palermo. Elimination diet and double-blind placebo controlled (DBPC) wheat challenge proved the NCWS diagnosis. All subjects underwent nutritional parameters measurement, duodenal histology, Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) DQ typing and body mass index (BMI) evaluation.
