Effects of Adding Force Control to a VR Game on Brain Activation

One of the major contributor for the lower quality of living in the aged population, is the reduction in hand function. To mitigate this, several virtual-reality based hand rehabilitation/training systems have been developed. However, most of these systems are solely controlled by hand gestures, and do not incorporate the force between the fingertips. Which is not the case for grabbing things in real life. With that in mind, the researchers assumed that a virtual-reality based hand rehabilitation/training system that incorporates force control into its input can be more beneficial in terms of recovering one's hand function. To test out this claim, subjects were recruited and tasked to play a game using both input systems (wfc and wofc), while their brain activity while using both input system was simultaneously recorded using functional near infrared spectroscopy and compared

Bed Rest Study SBI 2023

The study will consist of three groups of subjects. Ten young male subjects (18-30 years) will lie supine for 21 days, 10 older male subjects (65+ years) will lie supine for 10 days, and a third group of 10 older male subjects (65+ years) will also lie supine for 10 days but will receive interventions (see below) to counteract the physical changes caused by supine lying. All three groups will be bedridden in the premises of Izola General Hospital. Subjects will be housed in 5-bed rooms at the hospital and will receive 24-hour medical care, proper hygiene, nutrition, passive exercise, Internet, a relaxing environment, and visits. After their stay, subjects return home but receive 21 days of care at local fitness centers. Rehabilitation consists of interval training, in which subjects perform high-intensity exercise for 4 times 5 minutes. A number of important health parameters are measured before, during, and after bed rest. Some of these measurements will be invasive (blood and muscle sampling), for which appropriate medical personnel, sterile instruments, and environment will be available. Measurements will include normal voluntary efforts (indoor cycling, various jumps, short stretches) and electrically evoked muscle contractions (electrical stimulation with single impulses). All tests are normal tests and come from normal lifestyles and routine medical examinations.

Effects of Nintendo Switch on Rehabilitation Programs for Elderly People With Cognitive Impairment

Purpose: Healthy aging is the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and safety in order to improve quality of life as people age. This study aimed to provide healthy aging for people with cognitive impairment through the use of the Nintendo Switch combined with Occupational Therapy sessions. Material and methods: a randomized clinical trial was conducted. The sample was randomized using a software program, OxMar, which allowed the separation of the sample into a control group (CG), which received their usual sessions of conventional occupational therapy, and an experimental group (EG), which received therapy with Nintendo Switch, plus their conventional occupational therapy sessions. An 8-week intervention was conducted with Nintendo Switch. Measures: Nine Hole Peg Test, Box and Block Test, Barthel Index, WHOQOL-BREF, CSQ-8.

Dietary protein intake and physical activity are key to minimise the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass. While animal-derived protein sources are considered high-quality anabolic foods, it remains unclear whether non-animal-derived (vegan) protein sources support skeletal muscle maintenance and healthy ageing. The aim of the present study is to assess the effect of a vegan diet on daily muscle protein synthesis rates compared to a protein-matched omnivorous diet where the majority of protein is derived from high-quality animal-based protein sources.

Biological Effects in Consumers of Resveratrol-enriched Wine

The objective of this clinical trial is to compare the health conditions of the participating population before and after an intervention with Resveratrol enriched wine. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. • The consumption of wine enriched with resveratrol could slow down or reverse the biological age ? 2. • The consumption of wine enriched with resveratrol could improve body composition fat mass / muscle mass ? The participants will be evaluated at the beginning and at the end of the clinical trial and will adopt only one change in their habits, that is, change the usual wine they consume with their meals for a wine enriched with resveratrol, in a moderate measure, 250 cc for men and 125 cc/day for women. The design of the study will be that each volunteer is their own control, pre and post intervention.

Effect of Mindfulness on EEG Brain Activity for Cognitive and Psychological Well-being in the Elderly

As the worldwide population of older adults rapidly increases over the coming years, effective strategies are needed to help this population to maintain and enhance physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being. Up to 10% of community dwelling older adults have depressive symptoms in Europe. Older adults are also subject to chronic illnesses which further exacerbate psychological symptoms. Furthermore, normal aging is associated with decline in cognitive functioning. Given the prevalence of mental health problems and cognitive difficulties in older adults, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) could be helpful in this population. Accordingly, a growing number of studies suggest that mindfulness-based interventions in the elderly have beneficial effects on psychological health (decrease in depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and increase in general mood and positive affect) and cognition (enhanced attention, executive functions). Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive technique which can be useful to study the neurophysiological correlates of mindfulness, and give neurobiological evidence of its beneficial effect in the elderly. Studies that examined spectral power outcomes between mindfulness and control state showed (i) increased alpha and theta power, as a marker of internally-directed attention processing and executive functioning and (ii) a shift towards left-sided anterior alpha activation, a pattern associated previously with positive emotions. The aim of this study is to evaluate short and long-term cognitive, psychological, and physiological effects of a standard 8-week MBI in healthy older adults. Cognitive and psychological evaluations, and resting state EEG will be administered within 2 weeks prior to and within 2 weeks following MBI, and repeated 24 weeks following MBI.

The goal of this pilot study is to examine predefined parameters (sample size, capacity building, acceptance by community-dwelling older people (participants) and care providers) to evaluate the feasibility of implementing World Health Organization's ICOPE (integrated care for older people) approach in China. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Whether it is feasible to implement the ICOPE approach in China; 2. Whether the integrated care approach would make any difference in health outcomes and resource utilization. Participating older adults receiving integrated care (Intervention Group) are compared to those receiving usual care (Control Group) in order to answer the two questions above.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over trial to investigate the effect of the Investigational Product "DailyColors™" (DC) on age-related pathways in adults. The aim of this study is to measure the effects of acute treatment with DC on key pathways relevant to healthy ageing using blood biomarkers. Based on power calculations a sample size of 20, is sufficient to detect an effect size of 0.46 at a power > 90%. To account for dropout the investigators will include 26 subjects in total.
