Examination of ACT Implementation in a Vivax / Falciparum Co-endemic Area

In areas of which are co-endemic for vivax and falciparum malaria, treatments for the two diseases often differ and this may lead to mistreatment. This places an emphasis on diagnosis at the health service provision level. Diagnosis is also important when malaris endemicity is low - most fevers are not caused by disease. These two issues mean that most malaria and fevers are not adequately treated, even though the drugs may be effective; many patients who do not have malaria are treated for the disease, and patients with malaria may get the wrong treatment for their species. The study aims to test the effectiveness of employing rapid diagnostic tests and will study the effect on correct treatment.

Study on the Incidence of Febrile Episodes During Stem Cells Collection After Chemotherapy in Patients With Multiple Myeloma

To evaluate the difference in the incidence of febrile episodes in patients undergoing stem cells mobilization with chemotherapy and filgrastim versus chemotherapy and lenograstim. A febrile episode will be considered as: body temperature > 38°C for two measurements in the 24 hours with an interval of 6 hours at least between the two measurements.

Assessment of New Blood Culture Methods on the Microbiological Documentation of Febrile Neutropenia

Febrile neutropenia are microbiologically documented in only 30% of the cases, and almost exclusively by blood cultures. The reasons for this low documentation are likely multiple: (1) some of these fevers are of non-infectious origin. (2) The bacterial inoculum present in the blood may be low and consequently undetectable by conventional blood cultures. The primary objective of the study is to assess new blood culture procedures and technics, in order to improve the diagnostic yield of blood cultures during febrile neutropenic episodes.

PAVES: Pegfilgrastim Anti-vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Evaluation Study

This is a phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multi-center study evaluating the efficacy of pegfilgrastim to reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia (FN) in patients with newly diagnosed, locally-advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer receiving first-line treatment with bevacizumab and either 5-fluorouracil, Oxaliplatin, Leucovorin (FOLFOX) or 5-fluorouracil, Irinotecan, Leucovorin (FOLFIRI). This study will also investigate the effect of adding pegfilgrastim to bevacizumab and either FOLFOX or FOLFIRI by evaluating overall survival, progression-free survival, and overall response rate in each arm at regular intervals over a maximum of 60 months follow-up.

Pilot Study of a Catheter-based Ultrasound Hyperthermia System

RATIONALE: Hyperthermia therapy kills tumor cells by heating them to several degrees above normal body temperature. Ultrasound energy may be able to kill tumor cells by heating up the tumor cells without affecting the surrounding tissue. Implant radiation therapy uses radioactive material placed directly into or near a tumor to kill tumor cells. Giving ultrasound hyperthermia therapy after implant radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying ultrasound hyperthermia therapy to see how well it works after implant radiation therapy in treating patients with Stage III/IV cancer of the cervix or prostate cancer with a rising prostate specific antigen (PSA) after prior local therapy.
