Study of Weekly ALTU-238 Compared With Daily Nutropin AQ in Prepubertal Children With Growth Hormone Deficiency

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ALTU-238 in the treatment of children with growth hormone deficiency who have not yet reached puberty who lack the normal ability to make growth hormone themselves. This study will also test if ALTU-238 works as a weekly treatment.

African-American Bone Metabolism and Lactation Study

The primary aim of this study is to obtain measures of amino-terminal telopeptides of procollagen 1 (P1NP), a marker of bone formation, in lactating and non-lactating post-partum African-American women both at 6-8 and at 12-14 weeks post-partum, and to compare these values to those of normal controls. The secondary aim is to obtain at the same time points, measurements of Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein (PTHrP), additional markers of bone turnover [e.g. N-telopeptide of collagen cross-links (NTx), C-telopeptide of collagen cross-links (Ctx),bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) and osteocalcin (OC)], calcium and vitamin D metabolism in these subjects. These results will be compared with a non-African-American cohort of post-partum women and normal controls. The investigators hypothesize that African-American lactating women will have increased bone turnover when compared to non-lactating postpartum women and normal controls. The investigators further hypothesize that bone turnover is increased in lactating women independent of race.

A Study of the Safety and Effectiveness of a R256918 in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of 12 weeks of treatment with R256918 in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who are taking metformin. The primary measure of effectiveness is the change in concentration of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) during treatment. Glycated hemoglobin is a substance in red blood cells that is formed when blood sugar (glucose) attaches to hemoglobin and is a measure of diabetic status. Additional measures include fasting glucose, and lipid levels, and body weight. Safety assessments performed during the trial include laboratory tests, vital sign measurements, and adverse event reporting.

Treatment of Adults With Growth Hormone Deficiency

The objective of this rollover study is to evaluate the long term (1 year) safety of a new weekly administered growth hormone preparation in adults with growth hormone deficiency who were treated with the same experimental preparation in study BPLG-005. In addition, further change in efficacy endpoints of BPLG-005 by prolonged treatment will be evaluated. Additional efficacy and safety data of the experimental preparation will be obtained from the switch-over patients.
