With funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy will be implementing a new, health and wellbeing program for Head Start educators at ABCD Head Start Centers in the greater Boston area. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the combined impact of a health and wellness program and behavior change guides. The evaluation will focus on ABCD Head Start educators as the study population. Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy is responsible for implementing and evaluating this new intervention through surveys and analysis of administrative (health and wellness App) data. A paper and pencil survey will be used to gather information on dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors. The surveys will also include a module on satisfaction with the health and wellness App and Guides. Survey data will be combined with the administrative data about App utilization.

Appetite and Dietary Intake Across the Menstrual Cycle

Lay language summary: Women are younger and menstruating about monthly ("pre-menopausal") often have fluctuations in the food they eat ("dietary intake") across the menstrual cycle. However, relationships between food intake and appetite, metabolism, body composition (i.e., the proportion of muscle and fat), physical activity and premenstrual symptoms have not been reported. This study will measure appetite and food intake in laboratory and usual life settings in healthy pre-menopausal women in two hormonally different parts of the menstrual cycle. Data on ovarian hormones, metabolism, body composition, physical activity and premenstrual symptoms will also be collected to assess their potential relationship with food intake.

Acceptability of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Fortified Meals

Evaluation of sensory acceptability of fortified products prior to distribution is essential. We aim to evaluate whether fortification affects sensory qualities and whether these are acceptable to rural communities. Standard meals will be prepared using unfortified and fortified-flour with folic acid and vitamin B12. Preference and triangle tests will be conducted among women residing in rural areas of Ethiopia.

Progression of Metabolic Syndrome Components During Pregnancy

The goal of this cohort study is to investigate the underlying risk factors to develop metabolic syndrome (MetS) during pregnancy, and the associations of MetS and its indicators with birth outcomes in southwest Ethiopia. The study population consists of low-risk pregnant ladies in their first antenatal care visit (ANC), from Jimma Medical center. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: i) How do MetS components progress during pregnancy, and what are the underlying risk factors? ii) What is the association between MetS components during early- and late pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes? iii) What is the knowledge, attitude and practices of women toward dietary habits, food taboos, and cultural beliefs during pregnancy? The study population consists of low-risk pregnant ladies in their first trimester (<15 weeks of pregnancy) in their first antenatal care visit (ANC) who will be followed up until one-month postpartum. Enrolled women will be assessed four times: at enrolment ≤15 weeks of pregnancy, mid-pregnancy (at 24 weeks), and late pregnancy (at 36 weeks), and within two weeks post-partum for: 1. Sociodemographic data 2. Dietary intake 3. Biochemical analyses 4. Maternal anthropometry: 5. Body composition in a subsample. 6. Knowledge, attitudes and practices of dietary practices during pregnancy 7. Pregnancy and birth outcomes: During the final visit, new born babies will be assessed for Apgar score, weight, length, and head circumference. The mother will be examined for general health and mode of delivery.

Impact of Benazir Nashonuma Program (BNP) on Maternal and Child Nutritional Status

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of Benazir Nashonuma Program (BNP) which includes specialized nutritious food (SNF) augmented with specific reproductive health interventions during pregnancy on proportion of low birthweight babies and stunting among children, in low income setting of Pakistan. The study aims to answer if: 1. Utilization of Benazir Nashonuma Program (BNP) among pregnant women is effective in reducing the proportion of low birthweight babies, compared to pregnant women who are not utilizing the program, among low income setting population. 2. Utilization of Benazir Nashonuma Program (BNP) is effective in reducing the proportion of stunting among children, compared to those not utilizing the program, among low income setting population. Participants who are enrolled in the Benazir Nashonuma Program (receiving intervention) and those who are not enrolled (not receiving intervention) will be followed throughout pregnancy till delivery. After delivery mother-baby dyad will be followed for a period of 12 months. Compliance of supplementation will be measured, and outcomes (low birthweight and stunting) observed throughout the follow up.
