A Study Comparing Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion With Multiple Daily Injections With Insulin Lispro and Glargine

This trial will compare the metabolic control in type 1 diabetes obtained by continuous infusion of insulin lispro with that obtained by multiple daily injections of insulin lispro and glargine, a long-acting insulin analogue. Patients will be switched to the alternative treatment after 4 months. Glucose variability in the last month of each treatment will be analyzed.

Long-acting insulin injected at bedtime may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in the night in patients with diabetes. The aims of the study are 1) to compare the dynamic characteristics of long-acting insulin analog glargine with those of NPH insulin and placebo during the night and the early morning hours, 2) investigate differences on glucose metabolism of bedtime glargine versus NPH insulin at induced hypoglycemia.

Develop Novel Methods to Display, Report and Analyze CGM Data for Clinical Decision-Making in People With Diabetes

The purpose of this study is to obtain sufficient continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data in a manner that provides clinical information that is not available using conventional self-monitored blood glucose. Currently, a formal method does not exist for evaluating CGM data except for looking at each glucose reading across the days a CGM system has been worn and evaluating it based on clinical practice experience. The hope is that a mathematical model can be developed that will enable health care providers to quickly and easily determine what changes in diabetes treatment need to be made after CGM data is obtained.

Paclitaxel Eluting Balloon Versus Drug Eluting Stent in Native Coronary Artery Stenoses of Diabetic Patients

The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of Paclitaxel-eluting PTCA-balloon dilation (SeQuentTM Please) followed by cobalt-chromium stent (CoroflexTM Blue) deployment versus Paclitaxel-eluting stent (TaxusTM LibertéTM) deployment in the treatment of de-novo-stenoses in native coronary arteries (reference diameter:more then 2.5 mm and below 3.5 mm, length of stenosis ≥ 10 mm ≤ 20 mm) of patients with diabetes mellitus for ≥ 3 years for procedural success and preservation of vessel patency. This study is a prospective, randomized, multi-center, two-armed phase-II pilot study conducted in Malaysia and Thailand. 128 diabetes mellitus patients shall complete the study per protocol after random assignment to either of the treatment groups on the order of 20 to 50 patients per center. Diabetes mellitus patients with stable or selected forms of unstable angina or documented ischemia due to a de-novo stenosis in a native coronary artery will be enrolled. Vessels may not supply an entirely infarcted myocardial area. Late lumen loss at 9 months is the primary endpoint.
