Feasibility and Acceptability of a Healthy Nordic Diet Intervention in Depressed and Non-depressed Adults

In the future, we plan to conduct an 8-week diet intervention to investigate whether a healthy Nordic diet improves depression symptoms. The present pilot study tested whether the planned meals and diets were well-liked and accepted by participants (both depressed and non-depressed) in order to ensure that the future diet intervention will be feasible and successful. We also investigated whether any changes in health occurred after 8 days of this diet intervention.

Stellate Ganglion Block for Major Depressive Disorder.

A SGB is an injection of local anesthetic into the sympathetic nervous system (peripheral nervous system) located in the lower part of the neck, to relieve pain in the head, neck, upper arm, and upper chest.

ANTIVIRAL TREATMENT OF CYTOMEGALOVIRUS IN DEPRESSION

This study aims to determine whether treatment of CMV positive (CMV+) individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) with valganciclovir (VGCV) alters neural circuitry, reduces inflammation, and improves depressive behavior and symptoms to a greater extent than placebo. In this double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled, parallel group trial, 24 individuals with a Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (QIDS-SR) scale score ≥ 14 will be enrolled to participate in an 8-week treatment study. Participants will be randomized with a 1-1 ratio to receive 900 milligrams (mg) VGCV or placebo to be taken orally once per day. Participants will complete a 2-hour pre-screen, a baseline blood-draw, clinical evaluation, and MRI scan (visit 2), a clinical evaluation, blood draw, and MRI scan at week 4 (visit 6), and a clinical evaluation, blood draw, and MRI scan at week 8 (visit 10). Weekly telephonic visits to assess depressive symptoms and side effects will held between the in-person assessments.

D-serine Supplementation for Depression

The glutamate system is emerging as target for the development of novel antidepressant medication, in particular compounds modulating the NMDA receptor. While the NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine is an effective option for many treatment-restistant patients, it is also accompanied by dissociative and cognitive effects and also bears the risk to develop addiction, side effects that are significantly restricting its clinical utility. There is now compelling evidence of the antidepressant potential of D-serine, a NMDAR co-agonist. Compared to ketamine, D-serine goes along without any psychotomimetic effects or other side effects and thus might be a prom-ising novel antidepressant. This study represents the first randomized control trial to test the efficacy of D-serine as an adjuvant therapy in patients with depression and thereby adds to re-cent efforts to establish novel glutamatergic antidepressants. Besides clinical measures, this study also explores the biological mechanisms underlying D-serine's clinical effect.

The Modulatory Role of Communicated Treatment Rationale on Treatment Expectation Effects in Depression.

Placebo groups in clinical trials on depression show impressive improvements. Yet, there is little research on the mechanism underlying this effect. The aim of this study is to assess how patients' treatment expectations modulate the placebo treatment effects. We expect that patients' treatment expectation determines placebo responses and treatment outcomes, and that this expectation is influenced by the disorder explanations (information about the illness models) typically provided during the initial medical encounters that precede treatment. In the study we aim to manipulate depressed patients' expectations by providing two different clinician-delivered illness and treatment rationales (biological/ psychological). Patients will then receive placebo treatment (pharmacological/ psychological), that is either congruent or incongruent with the previously communicated treatment rationale. Hypotheses: 1. Providing a treatment-congruent treatment rationale leads to a better outcome than providing treatment-incongruent rationales. 2. Treatment-congruent explanations reduce the risk of side effect development, in particular in the medication arm. 3. Inter-individual differences in the effect of provided treatment rationale are associated with pre-treatment experiences and expectations, depression severity and comorbid anxiety.
