Decision Aids for the Management of Suspicious Occlusal Caries Lesions

The study will determine whether clinicians who use a diagnostic device treat suspicious occlusal carious lesions (SOCL) surgically more often, with the same frequency, or less frequently, than dentists not relying on a diagnostic device. The study will also determine -- among those SOCLs that are opened -- whether the proportion of lesions that extend into the dentin when dentists are using a diagnostic device is more than, the same, or less than when no device is used.

Preventive and Therapeutic Proximal Sealants

It is of clinical importance to arrest the development of approximal caries at an early stage. The potential for initial caries to develop into manifest lesions has motivated studies on the use of sealants to arrest the progression of caries on both occlusal and approximal tooth surfaces. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to follow-up and examine after 3.5 years, the efficacy of sealing caries-free or non-cavitated mesial surfaces of first permanent molars abutting lesions on the distal surfaces of second primary molars. The null hypothesis tested here was that preventive and therapeutic sealants do not prevent the development or slow the progression of dental caries over a period of 3.5 years in comparison to non-sealed control surfaces.

Impact of Two Recall Intervals on Dental Caries Incidence, Anxiety and Quality of Life of Preschool Children

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of two recall intervals on dental caries incidence (primary outcome) in preschool children with low and moderate caries risk. The level of anxiety, oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL), time and cost (secondary outcomes) according to each interval will also be assessed. Methods: The sample will consist of 224 children between 3-5 years of age, of both genders, with low and moderate caries risk according to the clinical criteria adapted from the Secretary of Health of São Paulo. Children will be randomly allocated into two study groups: Group 1 (G1) - oral clinical examination + orientation for oral health and diet on the recall of 12 months; and Group 2 (G2) - oral clinical examination + orientation for oral health and diet on the recall of 18 months.

The Survival Rate of Glass Ionomer Cement, Glass Carbomer Cement and Compomer in Occlusal and Proximal ART Restorations

The null hypothesis of this study is that GCC, GIC and compomer have the same survival rate when used for the treatment of occlusal and proximal caries in primary molars with ART under field conditions. This research will be done under field conditions in Barueri, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 600 patients will be selected. After 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months the restorations and teeth will be evaluated by two independent evaluators. Only children whose parent or representative who have signed an informed consent are included in this research.The ART treatments will be done by two dental students. The operators will receive the same ART-training. The children will be randomly assigned to one of the operators. The restorative material to be used in each child will be assigned by another random list. It will be performed descriptive analyses to describe the sample. Bivariate analyses will be performed to test the hypothesis. The data will be analyzed with a chi-square test to compare the survival rates of GIC and GCC. Some co-variables will be evaluated, such as: operator effect, the influence of the cavity size on the survival rate, the position of the tooth, the dentists preferred side, the child's dmft/DMFT, contamination and finally the preoperative conditions. The effect of these variables on the survival rate will be evaluated using a regression analysis.
