Filter by:The main purpose of this study is to test a method of providing mouth care to persons with dementia who live in nursing homes. The method of providing mouth care is designed to reduce fear in persons with dementia, so that these persons do not resist mouth care.
The Tailored Activity Program - Veterans Administration is a Phase III efficacy trial designed to reduce behavioral symptoms in Veterans with dementia living with their caregivers in the community. The study uses a randomized two group parallel design with 160 diverse Veterans and caregivers. The experimental group receives a transformative patient-centric intervention designed to reduce the burden of behavioral symptoms in Veterans with dementia. An occupational therapist conducts an assessment to identify a Veteran's preserved capabilities, deficit areas, previous roles, habits, and interests to develop activities tailored to the Veteran. Family caregivers are then trained to incorporate activities into daily care. The attention-control group receives bi-monthly telephone contact where education on topics relevant to dementia is provided to caregivers. Key outcomes include reduced frequency and severity of behavioral symptoms using the 12-item Neuropsychiatric Inventory (primary endpoint), reduced caregiver burden, enhanced skill acquisition, efficacy using activities, and time spent providing care at 4 months; and long-term effects (8 months) on the Veteran's quality of life and frequency and severity of behavioral symptoms, and caregiver use of activities. The programs' impact of Veterans Administration cost is also examined. Study precision will be increased through face-to-face research team trainings with procedural manuals and review of audio-taped interviews and intervention sessions.
For many, Alzheimer's disease is the number one medical issue facing our aging society. It is a late onset neurodegenerative disease, frequently under diagnosed, that impairs memory and cognitive performance. There are no known treatments that can either prevent or reverse its progression. Consequently, there still remains a need to evaluate treatments which can better stabilize the symptoms of this disease. These symptoms frequently include decreased functional capacity and negative psychological attributes (e,g, depression, anxiety) in association with the memory and cognition deficits. This current study is being done to assess an investigational compound that has been designed to not only improved the cognitive status of affected patients but to also better manage all symptoms. Hence, the ultimate goal is to provide patients with an improved quality of life by slowing the progression of this neurodegenerative disease
Among older adults the combination of depression, cognitive impairment (memory problems), and disability contribute to a worsening of physical and mental health and to poor treatment outcomes. Antidepressants help fewer than 40% of depressed elders with memory problems achieve remission from their depression. Interventions involving talking therapy are underdeveloped and understudied. Therefore, this research study will test the efficacy of Problem Adaptation Therapy (PATH), a new home-delivered psychosocial intervention for elders with major depression, memory problems, and disability. PATH focuses on the subject's "ecosystem" (the patient, the caregiver, and the home-environment) and targets behavioral problems related to both depression and disability. PATH is delivered in a subject's home, where cognitively impaired, disabled elders face most of their difficulties. Local Home Delivered Meals programs will refer clients who have symptoms of depression and are interested in research. All participants will have an available caregiver (family, significant other, or professional) and will be randomized to 12 weekly sessions of PATH or Supportive Therapy, the current standard of care for talking therapy. The study will test whether home-delivered PATH is more effective than home-delivered Supportive Therapy in reducing the subjects' depression and disability and in increasing self-efficacy over the 12-week treatment period.
Longitudinal observational study of cognitive functions, physical health and biological parameters in the whole population living in Abbiategrasso born between 1935 and 1939,1773 subjects, followed for six years in order to know the prevalence and the incidence of dementia and risk and protective factors of normal and pathological mental aging. The peculiarities of this study that must assure the outcome efficacy are: - Selected age: since 70-75 years old people represents a transition age from adulthood to old age, it is of special interest to study the evolution of psychic and physical functions of this population - Whole population not a sample study - Location: the small area involved (Abbiategrasso is a town of 30.000 inhabitants)can contribute to guarantee more homogeneity among the subjects and reduce undesired variability - multidimensional assessment(biological, clinical, social, psychological data collected) After initial screening, the recruited population will be followed up for two more times (every two years )
This primary aim of the project is to determine the association between antiretroviral therapy that better distributes into the central nervous system and prevention of HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment.
Deep brain stimulation has been developed as a substitute for the classical lesioning methods previously used in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. Recent, anecdotal cases reports suggested that electrical stimulation of the cholinergic output of the Nucleus Basalis of Meynert (NBM) may improve cognitive performances, especially the memory tasks. The present study aims to assess the effect of bilateral electrical stimulation of the NBM on the mnesic performance [assessed by the sum of the three free recalls of the Free and Cued Selective Recall Reminding Test (FCSRT)] in patients diagnosed with probable, moderate, Dementia with Lewy Bodies.
Projections from epidemiological studies suggest that, among the Western adult population, one in three will present a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), severe cognitive disorders, or both. To better diagnose the Vascular Cognitive Impairment, new standards were developed by a North America working group which are under validation. It is essential to adapt these standard for French-speaking population, and especially to define cutoff scores of the cognitive battery to determine cognitive deficit. The investigators propose a study coordinated by the University-Hospital of Amiens for french speaking centers. This study will investigate this battery with 906 controls to define the standards and 302 stroke affected patients to define the frequency and cognitive mechanisms. This step is essential for people to benefit from these new standards.
Empathy, defined as the ability to understand others emotions, is a fundamental concept in social interactions. It is a psychological phenomenon involving various separable components : (i) the ability to feel and imagine the emotions, (ii) the ability to adopt the perspective of other people. Several neurological diseases with behavioral disorders may lead to impaired processing of social and/or emotional informations. These pathologies are likely to induce a lack of empathy that may result from impairments at different levels. The objective is simply to study how others' emotions are understood and how this allows for regulation of personal behavior. This study is being carried out among patients seen for various health problems and who can make behavior changes. This study could help to understand some neurological diseases and thereby to identify them earlier and/or to better differentiate them.
The purpose of this study is to determine if insulin-like growth factors (IGF) play a role in the development of dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study will compare results from genetic testing between patients with AD and two other groups: younger biological family members of the AD patients and individuals without AD matched by age to the AD patients.
