Filter by:This international study evaluates the impact of home-based caregiver-delivered music and reading interventions for people with dementia. The project aims to address the need for improved informal dementia care by training family caregivers to utilise a music or reading intervention with the person they are caring for. The interventions aim to decrease behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia as well as improve quality of life and well being of both people living with dementia and their caregivers. Participants will be allocated into a music intervention group, a reading intervention group or standard care group. In addition, the researchers will seek to determine the cost-effectiveness of using the music intervention.
The present study will refine and conduct a preliminary efficacy evaluation of Care to Plan. Care to Plan is an online care planning tool that provides a succinct and clear overview of various types of dementia caregiver interventions, administers a brief validated assessment of risk, and generates individualized recommendations for dementia caregivers as well as resources that link users to a selected recommendation. There remains a lack of individualized information that can directly meet the diverse needs of caregivers or their relatives with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia (ADRD). This project will advance scientific knowledge, technical capability, and clinical practice as they pertain to ADRD management and caregiver support.
This is a 5-year project. In the 1st year of this study, a pilot randomized controlled trial evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of a goal-setting behavior change intervention aim at reducing modifiable risk factors for preventing cognitive decline. The aim of 2nd to 5th year of this study to investigate whether this multidomain intervention to optimize self-management of cognitive decline risk factors in older individuals, delivered through a mentor- supported interactive internet platform, can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
The purpose of this study is to determine how well a blood test can detect amyloid beta, a protein involved in Alzheimer's disease. Participants will be asked to complete an initial blood collection and cognitive testing, and a subset of participants will be asked to complete a larger blood collection, amyloid PET imaging, and an MRI.
This study evaluates the effect of Bosutinib (Bosulif,Pfizer®) in the treatment of patients with Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Half participants will receive 100 mg of Bosutinib , while the other half will receive placebo.
The DELPhi system is a software device that is used for the noninvasive evaluation of brain plasticity and connectivity. The DELPhi software uses EEG and TMS devices as accessories. Standard electro-physiological acquisition is performed using TMS to evoke regional neuronal potentials measured as EEG data. TMS-EEG data is analyzed with regards to conventional, well established characteristics of neuronal network plasticity and connectivity.
This study will examine the effects of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program and the Living Well program, compared to a control group, to see if the programs might be associated with better immune function (response to current influenza vaccine), physical and emotional health, and well-being.
A major challenge in care of persons with dementia is that illness and hospitalizations can lead to significant decreases in functional abilities. Maintaining functional abilities as high as possible is a key goal in dementia care, because persons are able to function optimally despite cognitive problems and engage in more preferred and enjoyable activities. Functional decline can be ameliorated through rehabilitation, building strength, balance and functional competencies. People with dementia, however, may not able to engage fully in rehabilitation due to their cognitive problems. They may not understand the therapist's instructions and may be fearful of what the therapist is trying to do. The proposed study will test the efficacy of a multifunctional interactive computer system, the IN2L, that uses video and audio to engage people more fully in rehabilitation. Music and videos elicit and sustain responses that contribute to rehabilitation goals such as increasing balance or strength. With the IN2L, audio and video material that matches the preferences and past experience of the person in rehabilitation can be selected. While this approach shows promise with rehabilitation patients generally, it has particular potential for application with persons with dementia. Specifically, when Physical or Occupational Therapists (PT and OT) are not able to engage a person with dementia in rehabilitation tasks using verbal instructions and explanations, they may be able to involve the person using audio and video stimuli that draw upon abilities that have remained intact despite the disease. To determine the efficacy of IN2L, the study will use a quasi-experimental design that compares rehabilitation patients with dementia seen at two comparable facilities operated by Presbyterian Senior Care Network. In one facility, the Willows, OT and PT currently use IN2L. In the comparison facility, (Southmont), OT and PT do not currently have access to IN2L. This type of design is optimal, because it prevents contamination effects that could occur with random assignment within the same facility. In that case, therapists in the control condition who were working side-by-side with therapists using IN2L would be likely to incorporate IN2L techniques in their therapy sessions if they perceived it to be useful. The study will use observational and self-report by patients and their therapists measures to determine if persons with dementia in rehabilitation show greater participation in rehabilitation activities, better attainment of rehabilitation goals and functional improvement when therapists use the IN2L compared to usual therapy approaches.
The goal of this R21 study is to explore the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of individualized cognitive prescriptions (CogRxs) in improving engagement in healthy behaviors and other outcomes in middle-aged AAs and to gain feedback on future implementation of the program.
This is a 8-week pilot randomized controlled trial utilizing bibliotherapy compared with usual care to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of bibliotherapy among informal caregivers of people with dementia in China, and preliminarily examine the efficacy on improving caregiving appraisal.
