Effects of Virtual Reality on Brain Hemodynamic Activity in Chronic Pain

Virtual reality systems have been applied in recent years to reduce pain intensity and fear of movement in individuals with acute and chronic pain. The main mechanism of virtual reality methods in pain control is to provide the effect of distraction from pain. Virtual reality systems allow the individuals to feel themselves in a different environment and shift their attention to the game they are playing or the virtual world created rather than the pain they feel. This is thought to be the main mechanism of pain control. However, the cortical mechanism of the reduction in pain caused by virtual reality methods, especially in individuals with chronic pain, has not been fully elucidated. It is predicted that the integration of virtual reality methods into treatment protocols will gradually increase by time, especially as a result of the reflection of technological developments in clinical practice. At this point, fNIRS, which enables the assessment of the functionality of brain areas during movement, has the potential to reveal the response of the effect provided by virtual reality technology in the prefrontal cortex. The aims of our study were to examine brain hemodynamic activity during the experience of non-immersive and immersive virtual reality environments and the change in pain intensity after virtual reality applications in individuals with rheumatic diseases with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Acute right lower quadrant pain is a common symptom in emergency departments. The most common etiology is thought to be acute appendicitis. Other etiologies may be overlooked. Acute right colon diverticulitis is one of them. It is usually seen in male and young patients. It is more common in Asian population and rare in Western countries. Ultrasonography (USG) and computed tomography (CT) are used for radiologic diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of right colon diverticulitis.

Factors Predict Difficult Colonoscopy Before the Procedure: Prospective Registry Study

In this study, the investigators aim to evaluate the relationship between cecal intubation time during colonoscopies and factors such as the patient's age, body mass index, history of constipation, Wexner constipation score, antidepressant use, and previous abdominal surgery. The objective is to assess factors that may predict longer cecal intubation times, especially in difficult colonoscopies. Prior to the procedure, informed consent will be obtained from patients scheduled for colonoscopy in the surgical endoscopy unit, and relevant information will be recorded. During the procedure, data will be collected, including cecal intubation time, if ileal intubation is performed, and the total procedure time.

Turkish Version of the Smart Tools Proneness Questionnaire

Technologically advanced tool solutions (i.e., the highest level of automation) may not always be the preferred choice for participants when given an option. Various experiments show that in vehicles, low to moderate levels of automation are often preferred over highly automated vehicles. The association of higher task demands with smarter tools has been reported to influence tool selection along with task demand. However, participants may avoid using a fully automatic tool even if the task is highly laborious. In fact, in a series of experiments, participants more distinctly preferred manually completing routine tasks over more efficient fully automatic task completion. Based on these collective theories, the Smart Tools Proneness Questionnaire (STP-Q), developed by Navarro J. and colleagues, aims to explore and measure interindividual differences influencing an individual's propensity to use smart tools, their initial selection of smart tools, and subsequent usage. In practice, measuring the propensity of any individual to use smart tools will be significantly beneficial for both professionals and non-professionals involved in designing, producing, and implementing such tools. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to translate, validate, and establish the reliability of the Turkish version of the STP-Q.
