Efficacy and Safety of BI 1356 BS (Linagliptin) in Combination With Metformin in Patients With type2 Diabetes

The objective of the study is to test the efficacy, safety and tolerability of several doses of BI 1356 BS (1, 5, or 10 mg taken once daily) compared to placebo given for 12 weeks together with metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are not at goal with their HbA1c levels. In addition, there will be an unblinded treatment arm with glimepiride as add-on therapy to metformin for comparison. The influence of several factors (gender, age, weight, race, etc.) on the bioavailability and efficacy of BI 1356 BS will also be tested in this study.

Adapta Pacing System Clinical Study

Pacemakers are implantable devices that pace (electrically stimulate) the heart. Some pacemakers have special programs to treat irregular atrial rhythms(top chambers of the heart beat too fast or too slow). Advances in pacemaker technology in recent years include features that automatically adapt to patient conditions without intervention from the clinician. Adapta (Model #ADDR01) is a new pacemaker that is designed to provide further automaticity advances by including the managed ventricular pacing (MVP) feature designed to promote intrinsic conduction (natural flow of electricity in the heart) by reducing unnecessary ventricular (lower chamber of the heart) pacing (electrical impulses). Adapta also contains a feature called TherapyGuide that is designed to allow the user to select certain conditions for each subject and receive a list of suggested pacemaker parameter value changes based on those conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the overall system safety and clinical performance of the Adapta pacing system.

Study to Evaluate the Response Rate to the Licensed Pneumovax 23™ in Elderly Population.

Streptococcus pneumoniae are bacteria which normally live in the upper respiratory tract of humans. However, these bacteria can also cause severe infectious diseases such as pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis. Elderly subjects are especially vulnerable to these infections, and the diseases can result in death. The currently available licensed Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine is recommended for prevention of pneumococcal diseases in individuals over the age of 65. However, the antibody level elicited by this vaccine, is not always satisfactory in elderly people. To overcome the problem, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals is currently developing candidate vaccines that are hoped to work better than the currently available vaccines. As a first step in this development, the present study is being conducted in order to evaluate the immune response to the currently marketed vaccine.
