This study is designed to evaluate the safety and antiviral activity of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF, tenofovir DF) compared to adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) for the treatment of HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B. Participants will receive either TDF or the approved hepatitis B therapy ADV. After 48 weeks all participants will be switched to open-label TDF.
The SYNTAX trial is designed to determine the best treatment for patients with complex coronary disease (blocked or narrowed arteries in both the right and left sides of the heart) by randomizing patients to receive either percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with polymer-based paclitaxel-eluting TAXUS stents or to coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a new dose of 500 mg Fulvestrant with the standard dose of 250 mg in postmenopausal women with oestrogen receptor positive advanced breast cancer who have failed on a previous endocrine treatment.
RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies such as trastuzumab can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. It is not yet known whether trastuzumab is effective in treating primary breast cancer in women who have completed adjuvant chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying two different regimens of trastuzumab and observation only to compare how well they work in treating women with breast cancer.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplant may allow the doctors to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen given before peripheral stem cell transplant is more effective in treating relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is comparing different regimens of combination chemotherapy followed by peripheral stem cell transplant to see how well they work in treating patients with relapsed Hodgkin's lymphoma.
RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy, such as hydroxyurea, cytarabine, idarubicin, and etoposide before a donor bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cancer cells. It also helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells and slow the growth of cancer. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy is more effective with or without interferon alfa and/or bone marrow or stem cell transplant in treating patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying chemotherapy and biological therapy to see how well it works compared with chemotherapy, biological therapy, and donor bone marrow transplant or autologous stem cell transplant in treating patients with chronic phase chronic myelogenous leukemia.
RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of the cancer cells. It is not yet known if this treatment is more effective than observation following surgery for stage III melanoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of interferon alfa in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage III melanoma.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage cancer cells. Combining chemotherapy with radiation therapy may kill more cancer cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is most effective in treating Hodgkin's lymphoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of different regimens of combination chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy in treating patients who have Hodgkin's lymphoma.
RATIONALE: Vaccines may make the body build an immune response to kill tumor cells. It is not yet known whether vaccine therapy is more effective than observation alone for melanoma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying vaccine therapy to see how well it works compared to observation alone in treating patients with primary stage II melanoma.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. It is not yet known which regimen of chemotherapy is more effective for stage I Wilms' tumor. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to study the effectiveness of chemotherapy and surgery in treating children who are at risk of or who have stage I Wilms' tumor.
