Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in Haemophilia

Life expectancy of hemophilia patients has improved considerably during the past decades and is approaching that of the general population. Hemophilia patients are therefore likely to be confronted with age-related disorders in addition to their primary illness and related diseases. Little is known about the occurrence of age-related co-morbidity, especially cardiovascular disease (CVD), in these patients. Low clotting factor levels are hypothesized to protect against both atherosclerosis and thrombus formation, resulting in a reduced risk of ischemic CVD. CVD mortality has been reported to be lower in haemophilia patients than in the general population, but data on non-fatal CVD are lacking, and no adjustment for CVD risk factors has been made so far. The aim of our study is to assess the occurrence of CVD and its risk factors in a large cohort of haemophilia patients. In this prospective multicenter cohort study in a group of 700-800 male patients with haemophilia A or B aged 30 years or older from The Netherlands and the UK, data on CVD history and CVD risk factors will be collected at baseline and compared with the general age-matched male population. Overall QRISK2 cardiovascular risk scores will be calculated and also compared with the general population. During a follow-up period of 5 and 10 years the occurrence of CVD events will be recorded and compared with the expected occurrence based on the QRISK2 scores and with data from the general population.

Dietary Polyphenols and Lipid Oxidation

There are strong indications that (combinations of) polyphenols may be attractive candidates in the prevention of the metabolic syndrome and diabetes through modulation of pathways of fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial function. We hypothesize that the combination of specific polyphenols, with partly distinct mechanisms of action, may have physiologically significant effects on fat oxidation through additive or synergistic effects, thereby improving body composition, insulin sensitivity and preventing type 2 diabetes. The following objective will be addressed in the current study: (1) to test short term (3 day) effects of combinations of polyphenols (supplements of EGCG either in combination with resveratrol or with resveratrol and genistein) to affect systemic lipolysis and fat oxidation during overnight fasted conditions and after ingestion of a high fat meal in overweight subjects

Aim of the study: The main aim is to collect data of patients with lung cancer, and to perform different analyses on this data. The data contains information on patient and tumor characteristics, imaging, and treatment characteristics. With this data it is possible to improve and validate the predictive model for survival and long term toxicity in lung cancer by multicentric prospective data collection. The long term aim, beyond this specific study, is to build a Decision Support System based on the predictive models validated in this study. Hypothesis: The general hypothesis is that we get a better prediction in terms of AUC (area under the curve) of survival and long term toxicity when we combine multifactorial variables. These variables consist of information from clinical data, imaging data, data related to treatment type and treatment quality.

Dementia is a common chronic condition, with predicted increasing prevalence. Nearly all patients with dementia will experience neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). This causes significant burden for the individual patients and their caregivers. Current treatment has only modest efficacy and important side-effects. Formulations with Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psycho-active compound of cannabis, are currently being registered for spasms in multiple sclerosis and other diseases, and may have beneficial effects on NPS.
