There are about 751 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Kenya. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
This is a Phase II, randomized, blinded, active-controlled, global, multicenter study designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of lomvastomig and tobemstomig, compared with nivolumab, in patients with advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC) refractory or intolerant to fluoropyrimidine- or taxane- and platinum-based regimen. Following approval of the protocol amendment version 3, recruitment into the lomvastomig arm has been stopped. The decision to stop recruitment for lomvastomig was based on strategic considerations and not based on emerging safety and/or efficacy data. The benefit/risk assessment for lomvastomig remains unchanged. The study was planned to enroll participants randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive lomvastomig, tobemstomig, or nivolumab. With version 3 of the protocol, recruitment into the lomvastomig arm has stopped, and moving forward, participants will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either tobemstomig or nivolumab.
This is a study of a strategy designed to 1) increase cervical cancer screening using a community-based approach, and 2) determine the efficacy of HPV vaccination in a region of Kenya where half of all children are chronically exposed to aflatoxin.
This is a randomized controlled trial to test a combination behavioral and biomedical interventions to improve the HIV prevention and care cascades in a population of mobile men in a high priority setting (fishermen in Kenya). The intervention strategy is to recruit and train highly socially-connected men to distribute HIV self-tests and provide linkage support to men in their close social networks. The study will determine whether this social network-based approach along with small financial incentives in the form of transport vouchers can increase men's self-testing, linkage to and uptake of ART and PrEP after self-testing, virologic suppression at 6 months (for those initiating ART) and PrEP adherence (for those initiating PrEP) at 6 months. The study includes a longitudinal qualitative and mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative assessments) to identify the pathways of intervention action, and understand how the social network-based approach with support for linkage affects testing and ART and PrEP uptake and retention in men.
WHO recommends that Therapeutic Efficacy Studies (TES) for 1st and 2nd line antimalarial medicines should be routinely carried out and data made available for decision-making due to the threat of emergence and spread of artemisinin resistance in malaria-endemic countries, especially in Africa. In line with this WHO recommendation, Kenya Ministry of Health (MOH) is conducting the TES to determine the efficacy of artemether lumefantrine (AL), and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHP), the first and second line treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Kenya. The objective of this study is to inform the decisions or actions made by a public health authority (Kenya Ministry of Health) to inform decision on revision of the antimalarial guidelines and policy in Kenya. Jhpiego's Impact Malaria project in Kenya, with funding and technical oversight from US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) through USAID and CDC, will support the Kenya MOH in its effort to evaluate the efficacy of AL and DHP in the treatment of children with uncomplicated malaria. The study is being conducted by Kenya MOH, with technical support and funding by PMI-USAID through Jhpiego in Kenya.
Spatial repellents are chemical-based devices that when placed in a room, make that room non-conducive for mosquitoes. These tools can be used to help in the fight against vector borne diseases such as malaria and dengue. However, their efficacy in reducing mosquito biting and therefore malaria transmission has never been evaluated in Africa. This study will evaluate the efficacy of a spatial repellent in reducing mosquito biting on human beings and measure the impact any reduced biting will have on malaria transmission. The investigators will recruit and follow-up 5,984 children between 6 months and <10 years of age in Busia County to determine how many times they will be infected with malaria in villages where the investigators will have distributed spatial repellents and compare the rate of infection to villages where the investigators will not have distributed the repellent devices. Additionally, the investigators will measure whether the distribution of spatial repellents in one village will drive mosquitoes to their neighboring houses thereby increasing malaria transmission in those areas. The children participating in the study will be divided into 3 groups (cohorts). The first group will be followed up during the first 4 months before any intervention is distributed and the purpose here will be to determine that the villages are comparable. After this, the investigators will recruit the next group of participants and follow them up for 1 year and repeat this again for another year. During the follow-up, the children will be asked to come to the health facility where they will be tested for malaria using RDT or blood slide for microscopy. Every two weeks, a member of the study team will come to the participant's house and ask them if they had any history of fever. If the participants had fever, they will be tested for malaria. All children who turn out to be positive for malaria by RDT will be treated free of charge. At the same time, the investigators shall also perform mosquito collections to determine the impact of spatial repellents on the density of Anopheles mosquitoes.
ID/IDA affects many young children in Africa. Vaccines provide tremendous benefits in LMIC; however, they currently fail to reach their full potential. We need to better understand the causes of vaccine failure, in order to develop new strategies to improve vaccine immunogenicity. This study will contribute to children's health by: (1) providing updated guidelines to better define the prevalence of ID/IDA in early infancy, and its safe and effective control using iron; and (2) providing a new approach to improve response to pediatric vaccines in LMIC, by ensuring adequate iron status at time of vaccination.
Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common among infants and young children in sub-Saharan Africa.Oral iron administration is usually recom-mended as cost effective measure to prevent and treat iron deficiency (ID) and IDA during childhood. In Kenya, national nutrition policies for anaemia prevention recommend a daily dose of 3-6 mg ele-mental iron per kg body weight if a child is diagnosed with anaemia. Using a novel technology, recent research found increased iron losses during iron supplementation. In an explorative analysis of stool samples collected from Gambian toddlers (Speich et al., 2020), an increase in faecal iron losses during iron supplementation was reported. The present study is aiming to analyse a relationship between routine iron supplementation and increased faecal occult blood losses in 24 Kenyan children with anaemia and iron deficiency in a more structured manner. Secondary objectives of the study are to measure and monitor iron and inflammatory status during the course of the study and to quantify long-term iron absorption and iron losses during a 12-weeks iron supplementation period, in order to put iron balance into relationship to occurring faecal occult blood losses during such an intervention.

Longitudinal observational cohort study and extension of the MISP ID: 38406 'immunogenicity and safety of quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine in HIV-infected pre-adolescent girls and boys in Kenya'.
The goal of this project is to test tools that will be part of a platform for training and supervision of mental health and psychosocial support helpers, including providers without specialized training in mental health. This platform, entitled Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support, is an online resource being developed to include: materials for evaluating core and specific competencies, training on core competencies, implementation guidance to conduct competency-based training. The Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support platform is designed to aid trainers and supervisors working with providers being trained to deliver World Health Organization and non-World Health Organization low-intensity psychological interventions. The research will address two study objectives: Objective 1. Determine feasibility, acceptability, and perceived utility of the Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support platform; Objective 2. Evaluate the reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support competency assessment tools. To maximize generalizability of findings, Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support will be evaluated in seven countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Lebanon, Peru, Uganda, Zambia and Jordan. The sites are varied by types of psychological intervention, beneficiaries, experience of trainers, and background of trainees. In each site, trainers will train non-specialist providers on a low-intensity psychological intervention.
