Identifying Predictors of Treatment Success in Painful Bladder Syndrome

Study aims to: (1) evaluate the role of morphological and physiological characteristics of the pelvic floor, pain-related psychological and -psychophysical variables in prediction of the success of myofascial physical therapy (MPT) for the treatment of painful bladder syndrome Patients with clinical symptoms of PBS will undergo physical examination, sensory testing in the genital area, perineal ultrasound examination for the evaluation of the length of the levator muscles before MPT and following 10 consecutive sessions of MPT. Improvement in clinical symptoms will be assessed and evaluated for correlations with psychophysical examinations.

Tau pathology and tangles have been associated with cognitive dysfunction causing neurodegeneration. AD, the most abundant tauopathy is characterized by amyloid plaques and tau tangles. An abundance of tau inclusions, in the absence of amyloid deposits, defines Pick's disease (frontotemporal lobar degeneration), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and other diseases including frontal atrophy associated with cognitive clinical dysfunction of frontal dysexecutive syndrome, progressive nonfluent aphasia and semantic dementia as recently reviewed (Gozes 2010). It is the investigators aim to follow other protein expression [as per recent publications (Marksteiner et al., 2011)] in blood and CSF samples from those tauopathies. Significance: Results should establish the possibility of using tau and other proteins as markers for early detection and disease progression in FTD, also in comparison to Alzheimer's disease (AD).

The study will also attempt to examine the suitability of several common assessment tool for evaluation of hand rehabilitation Patients who suffer from TF. Information obtained from the study will enable a deeper comprehension of the consequences of TF on the patient and will be the first step in developing a protocol assessment and evidence-based treatment in this population.

The investigators would like to assess the usefulness of this marker during positive pressure pneumoperitoneum, during laproscopic surgery, with or without intenstinal resection (ischemia induced by intra-abdominal pressure and vascualr compromise).
