The purpose of this study is assess if treatment with valsartan and a diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide, has beneficial effects in people with high blood pressure, diabetes, and albuminuria (protein in the urine) compared with amlodipine. In particular, the study will assess whether the treatment will decrease the stiffness of the blood vessels.
Metabolic syndrome is commonly defined as a set of risk factors and abnormalities that markedly increase the risk of cardiovascular events. Its relevance has been confirmed by a recent population-based survey of subjects aged 40-79 years indicating that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Italy is 34.1% if diagnosed using WHO criteria and 17.8% if diagnosed using the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. On the basis of the above considerations, the aim of this study is to promote the use of the SCORE algorithm for estimating cardiovascular risk, and to evaluate its evolution in patients with metabolic syndrome after the implementation of a multifactorial preventive strategy, with particular reference to the correction of lifestyle, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
The purpose of this study is to collect the long-term (12 months) safety data on aliskiren 300 mg when taken in combination with HCTZ 25 mg.
One hundred twenty patients with arterial hypertension and albuminuria (some amount of albumin in urine) are given valsartan 80 mg and then160 mg to normalize blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic) 12.5-25 mg added if necessary.
Post-menopausal breast cancer patients will receive letrozole 2.5 mg daily for the treatment of breast cancer and will be randomized to a treatment group to receive either upfront zoledronic acid 4 mg IV 15-minute infusion every 6 months or delayed start zoledronic acid 4 mg IV 15-minute infusion every 6 months. Delayed start zoledronic acid will be initiated when either the Bone Mineral Density T-score is below -2 Standard Deviations at either the lumbar spine or hip or any clinical fracture unrelated to trauma or an asymptomatic fracture discovered at the month 36 scheduled visit. Letrozole 2.5 mg will be given daily for 5 years.

During the Core Phase of the study, participants received STI571 at a dose of 400 milligrams (mg) daily for up to 12 months. Participants completing 12 months of therapy were eligible to continue treatment in the Extension Phase of the study provided that, in the opinion of the investigator, they had benefited from treatment with STI571 and there were no safety concerns.
