A methodical evaluation of novel measurement and fitting methods for individualizing CE-labelled Sonova brand hearing instruments (e.g. Phonak hearing instruments) is intended to be conducted on hearing impaired participants. The aim of the study is to investigate and asses strength and weaknesses of these novel measurement and fitting methods in terms of optimizing hearing performance and experience and/or usability of the hearing aids and accessories. Both laboratory measurements as well as evaluations in real life environments will be carried out. This will be a controlled and randomised active comparator clinical evaluation which will be conducted mono-centric at Sonova AG Headquarter based in Stäfa.
The clinical-functional result after frontal and parietal burr-hole trepanation for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is effective with regards to control of the hematoma and regression of symptoms (headache, decreased vigilance and neurological deficits). However, in patients the treatment may leave visible depressions of the scalp, just above the trepanation sites, that typically develop gradually after weeks - months after the procedure. A considerable proportion of patients find this aesthetically, functionally and psychologically disturbing; the skin depressions may even cause pain or interfere with activities of daily living, such as combing, etc. An effective method would exist to avoid this undesired treatment effect: Before the skin is closed, a permeable titanium burr-hole plate could be attached above the trepanation site in order to prevent the skin from sinking into the bony defect. However, this is rarely done today, likely because there is no evidence that this treatment modification is effective and safe. Moreover, as material is implanted, this causes additional costs. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate whether the application of burr-hole plates on both the frontal and parietal burr-hole in the context of burr-hole trepanation for the treatment of cSDH can improve patient satisfaction with the aesthetic result of the surgery. In addition, the study is intended to demonstrate that this additional measure will not result in poorer hematoma control, poorer clinical/neurological outcomes, or additional complications for the patient. In a prospective, single-blind and controlled approach, we randomize 80 patients with uni- or bilateral cSDH into an intervention group (with burr-hole plates) or into a control group (without burr-hole plates). The primary end result of the study is the patient's reported satisfaction with the aesthetic outcome of the surgical scar. Secondary results are pain, functionality, neurological status, health-related quality of life, residual hematoma volume, and complications (according to Clavien-Dindo scale; especially re-operation rate for recurring cSDH and infections). The study corresponds to a modern approach, since today's patients not only expect favorable treatment results for their disease, but the therapy should also avoid permanent undesired side-effects, if possible.
Current evidence suggest that sleep apnea-associated oxygen desaturations may induce cardiovascular morbidities in the long term, whereas arousals associated with sleep apneas seem to induce mainly transient nocturnal hypertension. Reducing the occurrence and the magnitude of sleep apnea-associated oxygen desaturations could therefore have a beneficial effect on sleep apnea-associated comobidities. Since sleep apneas usually end with an arousal allowing pharyngeal muscles reactivation, a treatment option could consist of generating an early short awakening to anticipate apnea termination and decrease the risk of oxygen desaturation. The aim of this study is thus to determine if an early sleep apnea termination through the emission of a sound can achieve lower oxygen desaturations compared with "untreated" sleep apneas.
Phonak Hearing Systems pass through different development and study stages. At an early stage, feasibility studies are conducted to investigate new algorithms, features and functions in an isolated manner. If the benefit is proven, their performance is then investigated regarding interdependency between all available algorithms, features and functions running in parallel in a hearing aid (pivotal/pre-validation studies) and, as a result, they get optimized. Afterwards, and prior to product launch, the Phonak Hearing Systems undergo a final quality control in terms of clinical trials. This is a validation study, investigating optimized algorithms, features, functions and wearing comfort. This will be a clinical evaluation which will be conducted mono centric at Sonova AG Headquarters based in Stäfa (Switzerland).
This single center case control study will assess differences in bone structure between women and men with longstanding type 1 diabetes (diabetes duration>/= 25 years) and healthy controls.
To characterize the relationship of renal biomarkers (Creatinine, albumin, Cystatin C, NGAL, beta-trace protein, beta-2 microglobulin, and uromodulin) between each other and the variation over age, measured in serum and urine of healthy children. Unused residual blood and urine samples will be used for testing the renal Parameters.
